True, but this thread is about the White Album on a single disc, not a single rectangle.

I feel like having Paul’s and 2 of John’s ballads in side 1 (except USSR, just because it’s a good opener), and then having the hard hitting sounds and themes for side 2 would be effective.
(Also don’t @me for including Savoy Truffle , it’s a good song)

Nice running orders @Paul Prole and @Jonnie08. J8, your side 2 is Harrison heavy. I wrote somewhere on here that a way forward for the Beatles would have been splitting the White up into John, Paul, George and band/Ringo sides. After all the inserts were of each individual Beatle, not band pictures. That format would have given each artist more room to breathe.
Also, something that happened to me this last year is my concentration on the White Deluxe Session tracks. For instance, on this version of Martha My Dear , Paul seems to be reaching out to me in a way I can’t explain (and didn’t feel back in 1968). Maybe it’s because I’m a new dog owner but I would for sure include that song as the opener on side 2. “Don’t forget me Martha My Dear “.

I´ve been away for some time from the forum – sorry.
It seems impossible for me to reduce the White Album to one disc – too many songs I love would have to be let out – painfully.
So the decision the release a double album was the best made.
However – I could easily dispense of “Revolution 9 ” … and “Wild Honey Pie ” … but soon it´s getting tough.
Short tracks like “Why Don´t We Do It”, “I Will ” (both great songs) … and even the non-mentioned snippet “Can You Take Me Back …” would feel to me as heavy losses. I´m not particularily fond of “Bungalow Bill” and “Rocky Raccoon ” – and also George´s “Piggies ” and “Savoy Truffle ” are not the greatest efforts, but “Long, Long, Long ” is a marvel … so even if I eliminate the songs mentioned above I´m sticking at 24 …
I´d like to see “Not Guilty ” instead of “Revolution 9 ” … and if John would have been offended than I´ll take his “What´s The New Mary Jane” in addition.
Impossible to reduce further for me … not now when I know all these pieces of art.

I became inspired to make merry with the known albums after reading an article about this very thing. Here you are, having been agonising over it for years. I will keep to the specs but, as I have been rearranging albums to include singles, I am adding “Hey Jude ” to the mix. Prior to the internet, and after the fact, it was a mystery as to where it fit into the canon. I think it is an important marker as the rest of the album seems to step away from what had gone before. Here is my considered version:
“Wild Honey Pie” – The band signalled a stark break in expectations with the blank album cover and this song is an excellent signal to the listener that all bets are off.
“Helter Skelter” – The reign of chaos continues. Everyone is pushing the envelope here. If I had more tracks, “Piggies ” would follow this as another bewildering mood and style change. Alas.
“Revolution 1” – The slower one. I like the faster version but the false start of this one continues the theme and the more I think about it, the more I like this cruisier version. It fits here. Most of the Lennon tracks on this album have a gentler mood so again, this version is more representative.
“Why Don’t We Do It in the Road?” – Breaking it up again with this delicious groove and another puzzling intro.
“Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey” – One of my favourite tracks. It’s so hectic and a good way to get the blood moving around again, while providing a relief from the previous sparse production.
“Savoy Truffle” – Which leads nicely to the density of this track. The horns are mostly responsible but that shrieking guitar and the way it blends into Harrison’s vocals gives it a crazy edge – so good!
“Julia” – While reeling from the tenderising effect of the track previous, it is the perfect time for this sublime track. I almost forgot this one but it compares beautifully to “Blackbird ” if you really must make comparisons. Another favourite for the vocal performance alone.
“Hey Jude ” – Here’s where I would end side one.
“Happiness Is a Warm Gun” – Starting side two with a track that takes left turn after left turn is an excellent way to bring the listener back to a state of anticipation, particularly after the emotional pay-off at the end of side one. With more tracks, I would follow it with “Mother Nature’s Son”, alas, we have two pretty McCartney songs so one can go, even if it does have those amazing horns.
“While My Guitar Gently Weeps” – I was so tempted to swap this for “Piggies ” but if I am going to condense the wealth, we need this epic from Harrison.
“I’m So Tired” – Another favourite from the first listen and a cheeky way to sympathise with both Lennon and the listener, both of whom have been through a lot by now. With more tracks, “Birthday ” and “Long, Long, Long ” would slot in here, purely for the mood and energy changes.
“Revolution 9” – In an album remarkable for its adventurous experimentation, this epic suggests even more possibilities. I’d be happy to start it without the “Take Me Back” intro.
“Good Night” – Here’s our Starr track and it has always been the perfect tuck-you-into-bed after the terrors of the track previous.
“Blackbird” – It’s a bold move but yes, let’s continue to defy expectations and not end the album after “Good Night ”. There is more to say. We can hardly leave this track off the album and I think adding it as the coda plays nicely into the sparse arrangement and leaves the listener in a reflective mood. It is also a reassurance that these sonic adventures are explorations and not a sign that there is no more beauty to be found.

I like this album @Penny Lane . I think it’s the first list I’ve seen in this thread that includes Revolution 9 . I’ve had an up and down relationship with that piece through the years. In the sixties it was thought by many that when played backwards it contains the actual audio of Paul’s deadly car crash, Yoko beseeching Satan, and of course “Turn me on dead man”. So it was an irreplaceable piece of the puzzle leading to the answer of what the Beatles were actually up to with all the “clues”. When that psychosis finally faded away, I was a little pissed off at R9 because of my desire to hear the songs that were pushed aside. Now all these years later when I have nice copies of all those songs, I’m happy to have R9. (Could you imagine if it had never been released? It would be legendary like Carnival Of Light ). Because of its inclusion in recent forum games, I have listened to it more in the last few weeks (both forwards and backwards) that I have in the last 50 years. Now it provides me an interesting nostalgic window into what teenage life was like in 1968.

I agree @sigh butterfly, I am glad that John didn’t budge when he was under pressure to leave it off the album. I agree with Martin that there were sub par tracks on the album, but I don’t think R9 is one of them, it fits well (don’t think it would have worked on any other album). John really put a huge amount of effort and time in to this track and for me, I love it, perhaps it’s not meant to be, but I find it relaxing(especially the No 9… No 9... bit and it’s not a cacophony, it does progress, somewhere.

I do remember some of the late sixties @sigh butterfly. More clearly a vivid memory of 970, I must have been about 6yrs old and I can remember the house with loud conversations, papers being passed around and various member of my family shouting that the Beatles had broke up. I thought something truly terrible had happened I suppose it had.

Today I felt like redoing this, but this time without considering what my favourite songs are, but rather to make it sound more collaborative, since that is what I miss a lot when listening to this album. From being my favourite album of theirs 14 years ago, The White Album has turned into my least favourite of theirs, all because I miss the magic of their more collaborative works, and especially their voices harmonising.
For my list, I use the following rules:
The list must contain
(1) a total of 14 songs,
(2) only songs from the original The Beatles album (a.k.a. The White Album )
(3) one song on which not all the Beatles appear or only one Beatle sings
(4) all the remaining songs having all four Beatles appearing and at least two Beatles singing,
(5) only if there are remaining places, songs with at least three Beatles appearing and two Beatles singing, or all four beatles appearing and one Beatle singing. (It turned out that i could have skipped this last rule, since the other rules already gave me 14 songs)
According to (3), for song number 1, I may pick any song not satisfying (4). I pick
1. Back In the U.S.S.R.
since it is a great opening track and also has three Beatles singing on it. Sadly, my rules don’t allow Dear Prudence to follow, so I will have to use a version where the end is faded. Also sadly, this will leave I Will , Julia , Blackbird , Mother Nature’s Son and Long, Long, Long outside my list. Rule (4) gives me following songs:
3. The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill
4. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
6. I’m So Tired
7. Piggies
8. Birthday
10. Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey
11. Sexy Sadie
12. Helter Skelter
13. Revolution 1
14. Cry Baby Cry
(I’ve excluded Yer Blues as I am not sure whether Paul sings on that one or not)
The track listing follows the order of the original album, except that I put Rocky Raccoon after Birthday , which works better as an opening track for side 2. I don’t feel like changing the order, since I am kind of used to this order. I think this would be a pretty solid album, as it leaves out a lot of the weird and silly stuff, and rather focuses on a heavier rock sound, a nice contrast to what they were doing in 1967, and a hint to where they were heading with Get Back /Let it Be and Abbey Road and to where rock music in general was heading back then.
