Just to be clear, @Billy Rhythm, the point I was making was that the two demos so far made available from the 50th are an improvement over those that appeared on Anthology 3 and on bootleg. Since the new tapes Giles discovered were found at George’s, that could well indicate that they’re the originals from which the copies the others had were taken. I’d agree that the bootlegs generally sound better than those that appeared on 3, and I think the two we have so far from the 50th sound better than both. As to rough edges, it would a shame to lose those unless those rough edges have been more the result of the tape sources than the actual recordings.

It’s also not the same ‘Sour Milk Sea’ demo that is on the bootlegs.
This is the first that I’ve heard of this… the one that we’ve become accustomed to is darned good… an unheard version just made an all ready enticing purchase just that much better… still think that the outfake is the best version I’ve heard… really don’t care if it’s official or not…:-)

The White Album has a special place in my heart……I was 16 in ’68…..and everything was coming together…girls, spots, O’levels… but especially my ever deeper interest in the Beatles.
’68 saw the Maharishi, whispers of Yoko, the hippy-trippy, changeover……closure of the boutique…….HEY blinking JUDE. I followed all I could from the newspapers and the invaluable Beatles’ Monthly, with its inside news on the boys…. Snippets, song titles and descriptions of the coming songs, and the ones to be left off that whetted the imagination, Why did mary jane leave that party?…….The answer to who’s guitar was the one weeping I remember was ‘Eddie Clayton’…..could it actually be???……No that would be too much to ask. I’ll have to wait and decide.
I immersed myself in the White Album …learning the acoustic numbers, working out a pretty good Mother Nature’s Son , I will and Julia ….. led down a garden path about the secret to playing Blackbird was an open G tuning……I didn’t get that sorted until my 30s…..(Oh for youtube when I was 16). I still think I must get round to a dropped D Prudence.
And here’s the point. The White Album is the gift that kept and keeps on giving. I’ve only this year come to truly appreciate Everybody’s gsthema my Monkey. What a blast that song is. Thankfully and long may it continue Paul largely keeps his songs alive through his concerts…..John and George’s deeper cuts are rarely heard in public these days. But I can slip the White Album on recall ’68 the Beatles’ soap opera and still marvel over these 30 songs.
From being such a fan you would think I had all the bootlegs……But I haven’t. I’ve heard a lot of them over the years but I don’t have anything that isn’t officially released ……It’s going to be another Yuletide treat getting into the Super Deluxe……Oh the anticipation!!…..It feels like being 16 all over.
Bless you John, Paul, George and Ringo.

We have an internet/uhf channel called Double J here in Australia, a sort of older hipster sibling to the youth station Triple J, both run by the ABC. And as part of the 50th anniversary doings, they’re doing a profile on the album tonight from 8pm AEDT (I don’t know if it’s geoblocked but you can try here), and their website has a couple of articles. You may enjoy this one which I find a bit hilariously wrong. For instance, a taste of Wild Honey Pie :
Not McCartney’s finest moment. But you’ve got to admire the creativity. Like every song on The White Album , it has its place, mainly as a kind of buffer between two aforementioned shockers ‘Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da ’ and ‘The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill ’. The best thing about it? It’s perhaps the closest thing to concrete evidence that Paul couldn’t do weird anywhere near as well as John could.
The worst thing? Even if you cut it from the album, you only gain 53 seconds.
If you’re going to pan this and defend Revolution 9 in the same breath, maybe don’t make comparisons that forget that Paul did the tape loops on Tomorrow Never Knows . Here’s another, about Honey Pie :
This one is worse.
Paul McCartney ’s love of classic British music hall fare is all well and good. But it was rarely a good thing when this style of music cropped up on Beatles records.
This definitely should have been on a McCartney solo record. When he starts doing his little ad-lib semi-scat part in the middle of the song it’s the closest I come to turning the record off (yes, more than ‘Revolution 9 ’).
But including this song is further proof at just how much the band were throwing at this record. That an album can feature the deep, yearning ‘Yer Blues ’, the wild wig out of ‘Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me and My Monkey’, the proto-metal ‘Helter Skelter ’ and then… this? Truly astounding.
Fine, but John does the guitar solo. You can tell that the writer is a John fan, they make excuses for the disliked John songs, but perhaps the weirdest review is this:
There are plenty of people who will tell you that George is the best Beatle. And that’s hard to argue with. But ‘Piggies ’ is probably the worst song on the White Album . His intention to write an anti-capitalist anthem, inspired very clearly by George Orwell’s classic novel Animal Farm, was certainly fulfilled. But the light-heartedness of the arrangement makes it fall short. He did a much better job on Revolver with ‘Taxman ’. While it doesn’t hold up against even The Beatles’ most middling songs, at least it got George reaching for new sounds and ideas.
Finishing ‘Piggies ’, which he’d started a couple of years earlier, was apparently the impetus for his writing ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps ’. I don’t want to live in a world where that song was never written.
Poor George can’t win, either he’s too serious or not serious enough. But it’s pretty awful to dismiss a song as merely background for another you like more. So anyway, my point is that the White Album is awesome and just be prepared for some howler reviews by those more interested in controversy than research.
I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe. This has been true for 2016 & 2017 but I may have to get more specific in the future.

Wild Honey Pie is good I don’t care what anybody says I love that song.
Even with hundreds and hundreds of outtakes from bottlegs in my collection, anything coming out of the vaults is worth it. Be it alternate mixes, long lost escher demos (amazing WMGGW), or early takes and overdubs (preferably the 100+ of Sexy Saidie), nothing will stop me from adding this to my collection.

Giles Martin talks us through the recording of Helter Skelter , from the first sessions of blues jams through to the revisited loud and heavy sessions and how it became the iconic finished master. Now remixed for the 2018 release of the White Album .

Instead of waiting for my son to bring one over in January…..I’ve ordered from Amazon USA……..they say between 6th Dec and 27th……We’ll see. The last time I did this….. the Modesty Blaise book I ordered arrived a month after their last date…..But they refunded postage without me asking.
Whenever the Super deluxe arrives I’ll spend the whole day inside imbibing.

The anticipation for me this time round shouldn’t possibly rival my feelings of 50 years ago when every song bar Revolution was a blank white page…….but I’m so much hoping it arrives before Christmas.

There’s a bit of a design fail. You have to take the CDs out and put them in by grasping the corners with both hands or you end up creasing both the sleeves and the pockets they go in. One of my sleeves was pre-creased when I opened the book.
