If the amazon listing is accurate, we’re in for some more Anthology-style out-take mashups. Rather disappointing, and why on earth do we need the Step Inside Love/Los Paranoias again?! Sorry if it seems redundant, I’ve only just seen it and I’m a bit miffed.
I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe. This has been true for 2016 & 2017 but I may have to get more specific in the future.

Not understanding where you are getting the mash-ups from, Apple finally seems to have realised no-one wants them. If you mean having a take number and then “instrumental backing track”, it’s the same as when they detailed them with ‘Pepper’ in that the take will be without vocals (no idea why this has to be highlighted). The only sign of such behaviour is ‘Good Night (Take 10 With A Guitar Part From Take 5)’; take 5 is John on guitar with a vocal by Ringo (with a spoken intro, the kind you hear on the ‘Anthology DVD’), new vocals were overdubbed in the next session (takes 6 – 15) and then it was all ditched and started anew with take 23.
Anyone know what take 22 is of ‘Good Night ‘, can’t find it in Lewisohn’s book – it jumps from take 15 (July 2nd) to take 23 (22nd July)
I can only think that it’s to give us the whole of ‘Los Paranoias’. Presumably, Apple thinks it is a hilarious joke that highlights just how much fun the sessions could be failing to see the joke is unfunny after 30 seconds, deeply annoying after a minute and insufferable after 2 minutes. Normally I’m of the opinion it’s better to have all than some, in this case, it’s better pretending it doesn’t exist in the first place. Plus the piece of garbage is on bootlegs if anyone wants to punish a loved one or enemy.

They do appear to be attempting to shift the perceptions of the mood surrounding the sessions… There’s supposedly yet another ‘Let It Be ‘ revisionism on the horizon that shows how much fun they had in January 1969 as well… most smiling, joking around etc. during ‘Let It Be ‘ is because the cameras are rolling or, in other words, they’re acting…:-)

I don’t believe that John, Paul, George and Ringo didn’t have fun moments during the sessions. It’s going to be hard for Ringo to be saying how great a time it was in the interviews for this when everyone knows he quit the band and wrote ‘Octopus’s Garden ‘ – maybe they’ll come out with the other three and Yoko surprised Ringo and Maureen with an all-expenses holiday and he walked out in excitement, delighted at their generosity and show of love.
‘Let It Be ‘ concerns me as Apple and the foursome will not want to release a film that makes them look bored, pissed off and wanting to be elsewhere, it’s doesn’t fit with their business model. There are genuinely happy moments in the movie but I think movie revisionism is a given as a lot of more joyful moments were left out. Then again, I have more confidence in Yoko re-releasing the film of John’s penis (‘Self-Portrait‘) before Apple give us ‘Let It Be ‘, so what is there to be worried about.

I think both Helter Skelter (take 3) and Carnival Of Light should be included on a separate release, along with some 1967 studio jams in a collection of the Beatles at their most ‘experimental’ side…
If I were making the decisions it’d be a single disc and, yes, release it on vinyl only for that’s pretty much the only “target market” who’d buy it anyway… I’d call it the ‘Amusement Mile’… ‘Helter Skelter ‘ was inspired by an amusement park ride and fits nicely into the ‘Carnival’ theme, while the ‘Mile’ nods at both tracks’ extensive length… Both recordings in their entirety unedited for us to enjoy from “the top of the slide” and to wherever it may lead us, as ‘Helter Skelter ‘ should obviously be the Side One choice… ‘Carnival Of Light ‘, for whatever the hell it sounds like, surely will bring back memories of flipping the ‘Live Peace In Toronto ‘ record back to Side One after the first 60 seconds, but perhaps there’s one of them legendary 1967 jams that one could look forward to that would end the proceedings… after all, 27 minutes on Side One needs to be offset somehow… and yes, release it on Zapple Records… this, is how I’d hoped to celebrate the ‘White Album ‘ this year but, I have to say, a version of all four of them harmonizing on ‘Good Night ‘ instead is likely the superior listening experience…:-)

I think I might save up and get the 7 disc if I can afford it. This album has held the spot as my favourite of theirs for almost a year now, but I still don’t have the LP, whereas I have Sgt Pepper , Revolver , Abbey Road , Rubber Soul , Help ! and With the Beatles already. I am particularly excited for the acoustic version of ‘Goodnight’. Can anybody tell me if there is another example of all four Beatles harmonising? I can’t think of any off the top of my head.

Not a bad idea. That LP would be for die-hard fans only, but anyone interested could finally listen to those recordings…
and yes, release it on Zapple Records…
That’s what they would have done back in the sixties… and what a pity they didn’t!!!

Me too. The harmony of the Beatles is nearly unrivaled in rock and pop music.
What Goes On comes to mind as a four part harmony song. Ringo’s voice clearly stands out as lead , and the backig voices fill out the rest in 3 part harmony.

I was discussing this very thing (reviving Zapple) the other day while commiserating with a friend about the inevitable shortcomings of this release. The Grateful Dead and the Jimi Hendrix estate (and maybe others) have special labels set aside to release rough recordings with limited commercial potential at reduced prices. It’d be nice to have a resurrected Zapple as an outlet to make available things like the extended “Helter Skelter “, the 1967 jams, and the other things Billy referred to.
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

Carry Tha Weight springs to mind too, though it doesn’t have 4 distinct parts at all times.
There’s 5 distinct parts in the refrain of Sgt Pepper , but Paul did 2 and John did 2 with George on the last one.

In addition to ‘Carry That Weight ‘, I hear all four of them on ‘Hey Jude ‘ and there’s gotta be, what? 30+ “distinct parts” on that one? forming one ominous voice? I felt that ‘Good Night ‘ was one of ‘The Toppermost of The Poppermost’ of ‘Anthology 3 ‘, and replaced the conventional version of the ‘White Album ‘ as I now listen to it as… but to learn that there’s a potential better version?! with John showcasing his newly adorned Donovan influenced acoustic guitar playing while taking the lead vocal?!! and ALL four of them harmonising during the chorus?!!! Fun Times…:-)
I also thought of ‘Christmas Day’ which sees them having a grand piss up to the tune of ‘Yesterday ‘ on their 1965 Christmas Record… that was excellent…:-)

There is no suggestion in the Rolling Stone description of the alternate Good Night having leads vocals from anyone but Ringo:
Of all the alternate takes, “Good Night ” is the one that will leave most listeners baffled why this wasn’t the version that made the album. Instead of lush strings, it has John’s finger-picking guitar and the whole group harmonizing on the “good night, sleep tight” chorus. It’s rare to hear all four singing together at this stage, and it’s breathtaking in its warmth. “I do prefer this version to the record,” Martin admits. (He won’t be the last to say this.)
John plays the same guitar pattern as “Dear Prudence ” and “Julia .” That’s one of the distinctive sonic features of the White Album —the Beatles had their acoustic chops in peak condition, since there had been nothing else to do for kicks in Rishikesh. In India, their fellow pilgrim Donovan taught them the finger-picking style of London folkies like Davey Graham. “Donovan taught him this guitar part. John was like ‘great!,’ and then in classic Beatle style, went and wrote three songs using the same guitar part.”
If the lead vocal was by John, I’m sure they’d have shouted it loud.

I’ve just listened to the new mix of Back In The USSR , and I tell you there’s no way I get back to the old mix. It sounds better than ever!! I bet my life the remixed album will be the standard version from now on.
The problem we all have is comparing both versions. If you are, say in 2055, and give this album to a new hypothetical listener, and all there is to listen to is the 2018 mix, he/she will be hearing the Beatles play, and the mix will go unnoticed: it’s The Beatles, their songs, their voces, their instruments, in short, their music.

I’m still not sold on the ’17 Pepper being my go-to (standard), so forgive me if I’m not completely sold on this idea. But it could be!

If this version is as good as they say, then why wasn’t it included on Anthology 3 ? It seems because they didn’t dig this deep into the Abbey Road archives when compiling the Anthologies

Lost/misfiled tapes were found during the compiling of the set, maybe it was part of those, tho when you start analysing the ‘Anthology’ discs there are quite a lot of oversights and mystifying decisions for whatever reason.
