One thing I would like to take Giles to task over is his disingenuous explanation about certain absences from the set.

First of all, he does this spiel about how when the project was first being discussed he was asked how many songs he thought they should go for, and his reply was to ask how many CDs they wanted to make the set, and pointing out that you never find yourself scraping the barrel with The Beatles and settling on how many CDs they would let him go to dictated how much he could include.

Emphasising that point further, when given the inevitable question about the 27 minute take three of Helter Skelter , he suggests that had he included that it would have limited him, meant leaving other things off.

Why?

CD4 clocks in at 52:02, CD5 at 50:48 and CD6 at 55:32. Altogether, the 3 Sessions CDs clock in at 158:22 out of a possible 240 minutes. That’s 81 minutes 44 seconds of wasted space. Obviously, you’re never get something to fill every available second, but don’t tell me that you’ve left off a 27 minute take of something because of time constraints dictated by what the physical medium could hold when you’ve not made use of roughly a whole CD of the space you have; don’t tell me it was space constraints when CD5 has 29:11 of unused time, more than enough for HS‘s 27:11 length.

Disingenuous? Almost too kind a word for Mr. Martin’s contributions to the pr-campaign. The problem is the elder fans, want him… and don’t seem to give a s**t about the truth, of artistic quality… and seems to lack the verbal capacities to phrase a proper opinion about the music and copy paste, or is it parrot (?), what others write. He added a bit too much:
– His words are almost less offensive than his use of reverb.
– It seems he has added sounds. Revolution #9 for sure.
I think he left out way too much…
– every song deserves some developmental takes,
– some instruments or vocals presented sepeartedly.

Giles Martin can learn from  Berkowitz, Dylan’s re-issue producer. Berkowitz doesn’t talk about the original events of recording the album, nor the artistic value of the product, but limits himself to his task as producer and sound-creator (mixing etc.) of the set. Giles Martin presents himself as the artist, the creator of a story etc… grrrrr horrible.

Martin did well with
– the Esher demos, on vinyl (the cd version of the Esher demos are soo bad compared to the vinyl version).
– the 5.1 mix, not all the songs but some… and he made Revolution #9 in 5.1 a thrilling experience.

I’m an old person Rob G…..So my opinion won’t signify for you.

Also I haven’t heard it yet….

..But the historical context, especially if it contradicts the prevailing understanding, ie that they were at each others throats 24/7 and locked away in seclusion tending to their own songs…….. is of interest. That’s why of course Giles has been constantly asked the question. Can’t blame him for answering that and for trying to enhance the truth of the original recordings while staying true to them.

As an old person I wouldn’t want an instrument-by-instrument dissection like some sonic game of ‘jinga’……Maybe for the Rock Band generation that might work. Selfishly I ain’t got the time left.

It seems after Pepper the Beatles wanted to play together again…… to entertain… us mostly, but themselves too.. I’m sure making us think sometimes and their contemporaries applaud would also have come into the equation.

Perhaps rather than being talented, (stamping his own personality would go with that territory), Giles is merely a skilled and trusted custodian of music that half the world already knows. The two surviving pairs of Beatle ears count for a lot for him…….Although you could argue they are only old ears so who gives a s**t.

I can hear my nurse calling, time for my nap in my day chair in the home for the bewildered.

Don’t have the super deluxe version yet, so unfortunately I can’t comment on this release. The remaster is going to be good I’m sure, but all the outtakes are what really appeal to me. I’ll have to do a ITunes download for them.

In my opinion this was a great opportunity to have a wonderful evolutional document for every song, a la Strawberry Fields Forever … Presenting the demo and then a few outtakes until the final product instead of just random outtakes…
obviously this , together with the new mixes, would be a mammoth release so i understand they didn’t do that.
This might be a great excuse to release a White Album 51 anniversay evolutional deluxe edition though…

So far i’ve only peeked at one song off of the super deluxe, the 12 min Helter Skelter . I’m so excited for the 50th when I can finally hear the White Album through.

The outtakes are the perfect companion piece to the album. I’ll have the weekend to listen to everything. Listening to Beatles content for the first time is a VERY rare thing, so I am going to savour it and take my time.

One of the most surprising moments so far is hearing Paul sing lines from ‘Love Me Do ‘!

The Esher Demos were really the only selling point for me (I didn’t like the Pepper remix and for as interesting as the outtakes are, how often do I really listen to them).

I felt the same way regarding the Pepper release. No interest.

Regarding the 2018 White Album , I wanted the Esher Demos, and am happy with it.  Other than that, this remix was a waste of time from the 3 CD set.  Hardly an improvement.  Txs to Ron Nasty for pointing out, I can get the rest off of YouTube for free.

As soon as I mentioned buying this album to my old school mate……Who has always said, (since we were 11) ….”You don’t wanna do that!” And then gone on to point out all the cheaper or free ways of obtaining the whatever it is. “But I want the book, and er the experience of unwrapping it, just having it….’ sounded so pathetic .

It boils down to actually ‘Wanting something’……There’s not much I really want, or need anymore. Got a nice condo, and car. Got a great guitar. Got an expensive watch, fountain pen, computer, phone. Got enough shirts, shoes…etc You reach an age where you run out of things you want. I’m so old I don’t buy green bananas ..

They also say at my age ‘don’t buy any ‘long-playing records’……But I’m gonna risk it……. for ‘The Beatles’.

I know what you mean, man. I listen to music on my ipod and via my laptop iTunes library, or speakers. But you can’t beat actually buying something physical and adding it to a collection. It’s a way of keeping score, showing your fandom in a tangible way. Screw people who think otherwise. I’m getting the physical copy of the album today for that purpose. To me it doesn’t feel like you have anything if it’s all purely digital (I do have backups on my playlist on an external hard drive too). Your soul needs to see the collection on your shelf!

Ringo comments on, and sounds pleased with, the remix in an interview with Rolling Stone:

…We were four lads who loved to play. And we made some good music. And it’s continuing, with the new White Album . It’s really far out to hear it. But I love it because it’s remastered and you can really hear the drums.

Everybody’s discovering new details in your playing, because we can hear you loud and clear in the new mix.
I have to pay Giles extra for that [long evil laugh].

Long, Long, Long — your drumming on that is mind-blowing.
Yer Blues is my favorite, only because of we were in a 10-foot room, not that huge room at EMI. And we were like a band again, you know — like a little club band.

But Long, Long, Long , I was talking to Olivia [Harrison, George’s wife] about this. Before,Long, Long, Long was actually just part of the album. But with the remaster, it is sensational. So beautiful — it’s very moving. And I didn’t think we got that a hundred years ago, when we made it.

That song sounds like just you and George having a conversation with your instruments.
Yeah, that’s how I played really. You know what I mean? I played with the singer — that’s how I’ve always played. If he’s singing, I sort of just hold it together. But if there’s some emotional move I’ve got, it just comes out, usually though when they’re not singing. So it can stand up beautiful. And we have to thank Giles. There’s a lot of information in this package, and, you think, “Aaah, why don’t we just put the album out?” But I mean, it’s the new way.

You mentioned Yer Blues . You’re drumming like an absolute monster on that track.
I am. But we’re all monsters because there’s no separation. As you can hear, John’s singing loud again, and you can hear the old voice coming through my mic or one of the amp mics. There’s no separation.

I couldn’t agree more. I sometimes like to pull out my Record collection like I used to when I was a teenager, and just stare at every side/angle of that album cover, while listening to the Record.  Only thing I do differently now is play it on my iTunes instead of the Record, and I still get that nostalgic feeling.

This way, I can even look at the Record at every side/angle… a-hard-days-night-ringo-8

Good night’s take 10 is lovely with those vocal harmonies. Not Ringo’s best vocal though, but quite lovely.

Regarding the 50th Anniversary White Album I find the mixes so much more spacious. Each element seems to find its own place in the sonic soundscape. The mix overall feels like it has more dimensionality to it. Surprised to find some elements mixed in quieter than I heard before, ex: the brisk Spanish guitar intro to Bungalow Bill and the drums in the intro to Birthday .

I pre-ordered this a long time ago. I got it in the mail. But then we realized that I had ended up charging it to Ohhh Boy’s credit card. He said just to leave it on his card and I could have it as a present for Christmas. I will have to wait another month to have a listen.

I did a quick a/b comparison and am not moved! Maybe, just maybe I should give it more of a listen, but my minds pretty well made up.  It didn’t move me after the first listen.

My ’09 CDs will still be my go-to.  Matter of fact I’m selling this 3 CD set and my 2017 Pepper 2 CD set. mccartney-shrug_01_gif

Having ordered this from Amazon US on the 3rd of November, they declared it ‘lost’ this Monday 17th Dec’ US time, (Tuesday 18th here in Thailand) and dispatched another copy that day with a tracked delivery guarantee for Friday 21st…….I thought that was a tremendous delivery speed. The premier tracking allowed me to view in detail it’s progress……..Via, Whitestown, Indianapolis, Louisville, Anchorage, Incheon, Shenzhen, Samutprakkan and Chonburi Thailand. I got a call around 2pm my time today, (Thursday 20th)………It was waiting for me and my signature at the entrance to my condo. Great… and a relief.

I couldn’t wait until Christmas and as  I’ll be busy that day, I unboxed and burnt all the discs onto my Mac’, iPad, iPod, and iPhones   immediately  ……My plan was having done that to take my time and savour each track…….reading about each song in the book  and then listening thoughtfully one by one. I couldn’t keep to that arcane and rigid plan. One track flowed into another and I allowed myself to wallow in the songs on the first side…..

The listen to the first side was wonderful….So close, so fresh and  intimate ……Lovely ………All the memories of my Christmas 1968 flooded back to me in a way they hadn’t in 100s of previous listens of the 2009 Cd edition. The magic of that very first listen 50 years ago cannot be re-created, because three quarters of the tracks then had been names only to me.

I couldn’t resist moving on to ‘Martha’ on side two…… I always felt a little sheepish about liking, Martha My Dear so much in 1968…..Cream, Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, and the black blues guitar greats……  Martha seemed so quaint and somehow quintessentially English…..and  ‘white’ ….but it always made me smile so much… Listening to ‘Martha’ today somehow, inexplicably……made me fill-up.

I guess you get sentimental when you’re old and farty.

Lots left for me to listen to……Looking forward to doing so. Worth the waiting.
