There’s been a lot of talk of the White Album as a single album – but recently looking at John’s output on this record – look at what an amazing solo album this would make. Admittedly you’ve got Revolution #9, but at the same time we have to allow an artist their creative expression. I also included Good Night as a John song assuming he sang it (I think I read that Ringo or Paul said John’s version singing it was beautiful – I will take that at its word).
I am not disparaging any of the other tunes on the White Album – just putting these in on their own.
I have taken the songs in exact order – even though I would venture to say that some resequencing would give an even stronger album.
I also didn’t time the length of it to see where it falls time wise. Feel to comment and even re-order. I didn’t try this with Paul’s songs – leaving that to someone else to try. I’m actually going to burn this as a playlist and see how it feels. Or if someone comes up with a better order.
Either way to me – this is a pretty outstanding record:
The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill

Yeah that might need some major sequencing I think.

I’d put Helter Skelter last. It would be the “gorging on music” experience I get with Band On The Run ending with Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five . I feel the need to go lie down and recuperate after listening to that ending.

Yes, Helter Skelter is probably best at the end. The surprise for me is what a comparatively weak album this is for Paul. Admittedly he’d written two monster singles that year, but there’s at least 4 of those songs I’m happy never to hear.

That’s a good point…….though there’s only Wild Honey Pie that should have stayed in a draw somewhere. All the others have a certain charm.

The Ringo White Albuim is a complete rip off! 1 track – That’s all.
The George Album is not a lot better – the length of an EP.
Seriously, I have split the Lennon and McCartney tracks into separate playlists and I think they both work well. Maybe Honey Pie on the end of Maccas is a bit suspect but I look at it as that extra special bonus track that has been lost for years.
BTW Pauls album is 31 mins long as opposed to Johns 45 mins – 8 of that being Revolution No 9

Erm… somebody seems to have forgotten Goodnight! Ringo got his standard 1 track per album (as the White was a double he got 2).
Making the Ringo White single!!! A and B side. Which way ’round would you put them?

Its a John Song though. That’s why it wound up on the John Album.
It’s bad enough to be a Ringo tune though. I’ll give you that (Too Harsh?)

Of course you’re entitled to your opinion, but I’d say that’s “Too Harsh” for I think that it’s a great song. Writing such an effective lullaby is something that’s only capable of a Master such as John and this one has to be one of the Single Greatest Bedtime Warbles of All-Time. I’ve always felt that the arrangement took away from its Greatness though, but apparently that’s just what John was gunning for, he said something like “arrange it like Hollywood, yeah corny!” to George Martin and got exactly that. I much prefer the stripped down version on the ‘Anthology 3 ‘ disc where the strings come in just before the end, or as one just enters the Realm of Ever and Everland at Sleepytime.
It’s understandable that so many had “forgotten Goodnight! however for a good chunk of ‘White Album ‘ listeners more often than not pick up the needle upon the introduction to ‘Revolution #9′ without skipping ahead to ‘Good Night ‘, a majority of ‘White Album ‘ spins likely conclude with ‘Cry Baby Cry ‘ or ‘Can You Take Me Back’, as in, “can you take me back (to ‘Back In The U.S.S.R.’)…:-)

So should it be who wrote the song or who sings the song?

So should it be who wrote the song or who sings the song?Personal choice I would say but generally (and Goodnight is an exception) he who wrote it normally took lead vocal.
I don’t know if anyone wants to do the research, but maybe we could all chime in on other exceptions that we happen to think of. This probably isn’t the place for it though (xposting to the song trivia topic). One After 909 is one, John wrote it but Paul sings the solo verses (I’m pretty sure anyway)

I simply could never separate Back In The USSR from Dear Prudence . Though not fancy, the transition is so pretty it’s one of my favorites in music. So that relieves me of the burden that would be sequencing them
