I’m not any kind of expert on drumming, but I know there is some debate about this song being all Paul. As fas as I know it is, but people always try to say it’s Ringo doing the fills near the end…
I found a YouTube video of the drumming isolated..
I love Ringo and he’s a great drummer, but I think Paul did a great job on this one. I wish there was more video footage of him drumming… or better yet, I wish he would drum at his concerts!
"Please don't bring your banjo back, I know where it's been.. I wasn't hardly gone a day, when it became the scene.. Banjos! Banjos! All the time, I can't forget that tune.. and if I ever see another banjo, I'm going out and buy a big balloon!"

There’s a promotional video of him playing the drums somewhere in Youtube, that’s as close as you can get. I think it was for Chaos And Creation In The Backyard and another one for Memory Almost Full .

He drums at 50:55 in this. Ignore the nasty troll bitch in the audience.
It’s a good show, he’s all adorable in it.
I’ve also seen this:
Ok, I just found this one.. It’s really cheesy and pretentious but he is drumming, on a screen…
I really can’t stand Oprah, she’s so fake it destroys souls.

I forgot to say that he played all of the instruments in McCartney and McCartney II , but there’s no actual video footage of it except for “Coming Up “

Yes, as well as the ‘Band On The Run ‘ album, which reminds me that he plays in the ‘Helen Wheels’ video which is a good one.

Believe he did the same for London Town since everyone in Wings quit and it was the same 3-man lineup from Band On The Run .

Paul of course did his own drumming on his first album, McCartney, and also on Band On The Run (he had other drummers for the two albums in between, Ram and Wild Life ).
After Band On The Run came out, Paul told the anecdote of how he was talking one day to Keith Moon, drummer of the Who (died tragically of a drug overdose in 1978). Keith Moon told Paul he liked his new album and he asked (to paraphrase) “Who’s that drummer you found — he’s very unusual!”
Paul answered, “It’s me!”
I think Paul’s drumming style, especially as it developed further on Band On The Run , is unlike that of any other drummer.

He sounds a bit clumsy at times in that isolated drum track, like in between 2:55 and 3:03 – it seems like he keeps falling in behind the beat a little bit. I think hearing the track isolated like that really exposes those little flaws or imperfections or whatever-you-call-’em. I still love that drum performance, it’s imaginative and it’s got character, but it’s admittedly pretty rough. I don’t think it’s taking away anything from Ringo to state that it’s all Paul’s work: I think it’s an impressive imitation of Ringo by Paul, that Ringo could’ve improved upon if he’d been available at the time.
Coupla youtube commenters speculating that it’s actually TWO drum performances, and I think it kinda sounds that way, too. Like a simple beat was recorded first, then all the fancy Ringo-style eccentric fills were overdubbed on top (beginning with that telltale hi-hat bit at the beginning.)
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

Paul has a different approach to everything, well because he’s errrm… Paul! Even his bass playing style is different.

I think I recall it was you I had a similar argument with many weeks ago — or am I having an episode of déjà vu…? I feel Paul’s seemingly laggard tempo there is purposeful, and fits well with the mood of the song. (I can’t remember what the previous argument was about, but it was somehow similar, even if unrelated to drumming per se.)

Hm…I don’t recall that – are you sure it was me and not someone else? (Someone besides “vonbontee”, of course!) It’s not like me to argue online. Except with paulsbass, once. Or twice. Or maybe more…
Anyways, I have no problem with the drumming, and don’t mind the imprecision at all, whether it was intentional or not. I was just explaining how that lack of polish makes me certain that it was Paul’s playing, because there are still people who believe it was Ringo.

The first time I touched a drum kit I gave props to Ringo, I thought it was easy, I can’t even play Love Me Do lol.

Don’t mean to sound like I’m quibbling, but I don’t believe it is a “lack of polish” at all. Ringo would have done the same — probably as directed by Paul!

The isolated drum track video was very interesting to listen to. I never even knew that the piano near the end existed. *facepalm*
I do think the end sounds more like Ringo’s drumming style.

The first- and last- time I touched a drum kit was when I was eight years old. It was some cheesy plastic drum kit intended for use by children. I hit the drum way too hard and broke it.

Haha, that reminds me of that bit in “Let It Be ” where little Heather McCartney hits one of Ringo’s cymbals and giggles when he acts startled!

I agree, he does have a distinct sound. I have a deep-rooted love for drumming, my dad was a drummer. My earliest memory of him is him drumming while me and my sister ran in circles around the room and called it “dancing”. My other earliest memory of him is him teaching me how to twirl drumsticks, and how to properly hold a record. Key life lessons!
