Or, to put it another way, what Beatles CD should I covet/purchase next? When I have the means I like to treat myself to a Beatles item each month, the last one being Yellow Submarine Songtrack . What would be your suggestion for the next? Should I pay money for the well-reviewed Live at the Hollywood Bowl Japanese CD? Or is that madness? (I know I should probably be moving into bootleg territory by now, but feel pretty naive in terms of what to get and where to get it…)
I have,
1 (One)
1962-1966 (Red Album )
1967-1970 (Blue Album )
A Hard Day’s Night
Abbey Road
Anthology 1
Anthology 2
Anthology 3
Beatles For Sale
Help !
Let It Be
Let It Be … Naked
Live At The BBC
Love
Magical Mystery Tour
On Air – Live At The BBC Volume 2
Past Masters
Please Please Me
Revolver
Rubber Soul
Sgt Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band
The Beatles (White Album )
With The Beatles
Yellow Submarine
Yellow Submarine Songtrack
Any help appreciated, thanks.

Not sure if you are looking for different mixes or just albums. Are you trying to get all the different songs only? If so, all you need is the 2009 Remasters. If you want to pick up vinyl and just various albums, it will be endless. There are so many different ways to do your collection. Let us know and we can give you some ideas.

I think the next thing to do is decide your favourite Beatle era and look for alternate versions. Personally I love the White Album era stuff so I headed towards ” the esher demos”. There I got early versions of many of the songs that ended up on the White Album plus others such as Sour Milk Sea. I found that many recordings from earlier periods sounded very similar to those released officially. The later period offers more variations and unreleased recordings IMO.

Your missing the itunes only release The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963.
Forget the Japan Hollywood Bowl release, its never been issued on cd anywhere so you are paying for something unofficial and way over the odds (of which should be £0 ($0) for a knock-off).
As for bootlegs just jump in (tho maybe hold back from the muti-cd Get Back sessions boxsets for now). There are links around this forum for good sites that provide them and are free – never pay for bootlegs, if you do you are wasting your money – as well as suggestions for good bootlegs. And we should point out that bootlegs are illegal etc etc etc (but they are great).
Feel free to send me a PM for some addresses if you wish.

Thanks, guys, some sound advice. It looks like I have pretty much all the 2009 Remasters. :’-(
Trcanberra, terrific shout – think I will order the US Hard Day’s Night & Help !. I hadn’t realized they contain both stereo and mono as well as part-scores.
MMM, I had considered the ’63 “Bootlegs” from iTunes, but held off as I like a physical product on my shelf, and also thought there was a lot of repeating of both BBC albums. But you feel it’s worth the punt then?
Bongo, the Capital sets look grand, and I might have taken you up on your hint if I had that much cash available at the minute.
I think it’s definitely time to try dipping my toe in bootleggy waters…

Bootleg-wise, you definitely could use a copy of the “Christmas Album”.
After all, “Plenty of Jam Jars”, “Podgy the Bear and Jasper”, “Please Don’t Bring Your Banjo Back” – these need to be heard!

Just sayin’…..
Seriously though, it is a good set to have if you want different from all the rest.

The new 2014 US Albums don’t have the ‘Duophonic Stereo’ (Fake Stereo) and no Mono Type B Fold Down Stereo songs.
If you want great sound quality and can live without the two I described above than the new US albums will be great. If not, you will need the 2004 & 2006 Capitol Albums and some Doctor Ebbits Needle Drops for those albums not in the Capitol albums sets.
Either way, you can’t go wrong.

@Father McCartney. I’d recommend getting the official 1963 Bootleg album but i wouldnt recommend paying £35 or whatever itunes will charge you for it. Ridiculous money for such an album.
There is no overlap of any of the BBC tracks with those you’ll already have on both volumes of Live At The BBC but there are a number of different performances of the same song, so for example i think there are 6 alternate versions of A Taste Of Honey , 3 of Love Me Do , 5 Roll Over Beethoven ‘s.
The Christmas Messages are great and something you’ll dig out every December.
Keep an eye out for the Back To Basic collections on the Helter Skelter label. They gather together all the outtakes and numerous alternate mixes for the Please Please Me thru to Rubber Soul albums and will save you a load of time gathering together whats out there. They are pretty much upgrades of the Purple Chick series.

^ I think I have noted elsewhere that Paul is the only one who seems enthusiastic about A Taste Of Honey ; I can picture him trying to whip the other three into a state of enthusiasm but their playing and harmonies sound like they would rather be elsewhere

Save up for the Mono box set. Look out for bootlegs on eBay though.

I say it to everyone – dont buy bootlegs from anywhere unless you want the artwork, which often comes part of the download, or a shiny cd. The material does not belong to those selling it and its all over the net for free if you look around.

Don’t forget the Baby It’s You , Free As A Bird and Real Love CD singles.
They’re great companions to their respective albums since they have exclusive content.

Grrr, “exclusive content!” Nothing but a big cash-grab. That’s why I hate record companies! Steal that stuff off the internet, imo.
EDIT: Hey my post count now matches my year of birth! (Which means I get younger and younger as I post more and more!)

I’d recommend getting the Complete Christmas Collection with all the Christmas albums. Also the new Live at the Hollywood Bowl reissue.
