@Joe @Ron Nasty Thank god, I thought I’d gone bonkers! My memory is weird, huh? I don’t think MacDonald could have been privy to this information, so it would still be unfair to blame him for his supposition. But I’m still thinking about the myth-making that critics inadvertently indulge in, I may have to write another rant 😀
I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe. This has been true for 2016 & 2017 but I may have to get more specific in the future.

I read MacDonald years ago twice…….and when I saw the last up-dated edition going for a song in HMI I bought it and gave my son my old copy telling him ‘this is the best book I’ve seen that informs on the songs and sets the context for them.’
Is there a thread or discussion on here that lays out the reasons why a number of you consider it so flawed?

Here is a thread on MacDonald’s book which has links in post 1 to other discussions on it.

As a whole, the ‘White Album ‘ is my favorite Beatles album simply because it explores so many musical styles and is so varied emotion-wise in the individual songs. It still sounds like it could have been recorded very recently; it’s so fresh and immediate. However, I have to admit that I feel that John Lennon reached his peak as a songwriter on ‘Rubber Soul ‘ and Paul McCartney reached his on ‘Revolver ‘.
I know that many people consider ‘Abbey Road ‘ to be their favorite Beatles album, but for myself, the songs on there do not have the weight and substance as the ones on the four masterpieces that came before it (‘Rubber Soul ‘, ‘Revolver ‘, ‘Sgt. Pepper ‘ and the ‘White Album ‘). While ‘Abbey Road ‘ flows along very nicely when one listens to it, I always feel dissatisfied when the album ends, and I certainly can’t say that about the other four albums I mentioned. Just my opinion.
But, of course, ANY Beatles album tops most bands’ best work.

Rubbolver Road isn’t an option? Phooey.
Rubber Soul , Revolver , and Abbey Road are my top three, with an honourable mention to A Hard Day’s Night .

‘Beatles For Sale ‘ for the first 5 songs in a row (the following three are very iffy). After that probably ‘Abbey Road ‘ which is as close to brilliant as an album can get.

It’s been awhile since I’ve listened to the whole discography from top to bottom so I don’t yet feel qualified to make a credible ranking of their albums so I make the distinction of noting that this is list of my top 5 favorite. Do feel free to do a complete ranking of your favorite and/or your take on what ones are definitively the best
1. The Magical Mystery Tour
2. Sgt. Pepper‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band
3. Revolver
4. Rubber Soul
5. Help!
I had a tough time choosing between Help! and A Hard Day’s Night – I feel like “Can’t Buy Me Love” is classic Beatles, a song that instantly conjures up images of that Beatles-mania aura but “Yesterday” might be one of the greatest songs ever written, really it’s a toss-up, which can be said about most of The Beatles’ catalog. I felt weird about picking The Magical Mystery Tour but it’s an amazing compilation of songs – from the information I’ve gathered they had the right to approve the final track listing for the American LP release and although that’s the enduring version in their official catalog they made it with the intention of it being an EP instead album so it doesn’t feel as pure of a selection for the #1 spot

I steadfastly refuse to recognize MMT as an LP , but it really is a great collection of songs on one LP. Makes the EP look quite boring since the only hits on it are the title track & the B-side single I Am The Walrus . .
I really have to give Capitol records the nod to this LP, and obviously so did Apple as they imported it into the UK and then finally made it officially part of their Catalogues in ’76

‘Magical Mystery Tour ‘ was never a hit.
I have the EP track listing of ‘MMT’ in my iTunes with all bar ‘SFF’ and ‘PL’ + the remaining post-‘Pepper’ 1967 tracks added, I also cut up the original ‘Yellow Submarine ‘ album. I couldn’t tell you the official track order of either without looking them up first.

Ouch that makes the MMT EP even crappier…. I just assumed it was a hit! (Although it finally made it on the 1967-1970 Blue Album )
Like you @meanmistermustard, I too have MMT as the EP in my iTunes and all the singles as they were. Mind you, I have a Beatles UK playlist, a Beatles UK mono Playlist and a Beatles Capitol Canada playlist to show all the different LP covers.

To me, “All You Need Is Love ” is among the greatest songs ever written. I believe Rolling Stone called it one of their worst

And of course as I always find myself repeating, I also own the original UK MMT EP, as that was the true canon release.
I have two. I bought one second hand and then a few months later my brother gave me another. And I also have it on a CD EP. Own of my least favourite Beatles releases yet I have more copies of that than the others.

I think all of you should relisten and open your hearts to the retroactively-deemed official album. They knew EPs weren’t popular in America and did approve of the track list for American release – that counts for something right?

All this talk of EP’s brings to mind the planned-but-not-released Yellow Submarine EP. In …Chronicles, Mark Lewisohn says this was put together by EMI/The Beatles after criticism over the album having only 4 new songs and a whole side of George Martin’s orchestral scores thereby eschewing the “most bang for the buck” protocol they had so long adhered to. The track listing was:
Side A
1. Only A Northern Song
2. Hey Bulldog
3. Across The Universe *
Side B
1. All Together Now
2. Its All Too Much
*That’s right sports fans – it would have been on this EP before its eventual appearance on No One’s Gonna Change Our World and Let It Be .

^ That’s a nice combination – early and later albums. Welcome to our happy Beatles forum. Let us know if there is anything we can do to you to settle in here.
With the 555 in your username, I have to ask if you’ve ever lived in Thailand. @Wigwam says that fives in a row is like laughing there.
