Of course, I think every Beatles album is a masterpiece. Sure, maybe their first few albums were not hugely groundbreaking but they were still ahead of their time. I think every album deserves its place in history, but I can’t help but think one is a little overrated.
I’m looking at you, Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
I feel like this album isn’t quite as good as everyone cracks it up to be. I still give it a solid 4/5, but a lot of people go on about how it’s the best album ever recorded. I would pick any other Beatles album over this, apart from PPM /With the Beatles. Sure, A Day In The Life is one of their best songs, if not their best. I always smile when I see it at the top of Beatles lists, because it deserves it. I find Fixing A Hole ; Good Morning, Good Morning and Within You Without You underrated.
But, I feel Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds is very overrated. With A Little Help From My Friends is good, but still overrated as well. She’s Leaving Home is rather dry, and When I’m Sixty-Four is probably the 3rd worst Beatles song I can think of. Of course this is a groundbreaking album, but so is Revolver & Rubber Soul which don’t seem to get quite the acclaim.
Do any of you guys have an album of theirs that you don’t think quite lives up to its name?

Abbey Road

WHAT!? Haha, I respect your opinion. For me, Abbey Road is my favourite Beatles album. After the fractured White Album & Let It Be , it’s nice having a whole BAND album – even if John didn’t completely pull his weight at some points. You Never Give Me Your Money is my favourite Beatles song of all time.

I couldn’t agree more. I hear people say “oh yeah I love the Beatles my favorite album is the White Album ” but that doesn’t really count as Beatles album, since there was little collaboration as a band involved, and its way too long to hold together as an album. I mean seriously when was the last time you listened to the White Album from beginning to end?

Well, I don’t judge an album’s greatness by whether I listen to all of it in one sitting. The White Album to me is like a cornucopia or a curious garden full of different delights — more often than not I’m not in the mood for all of them in one day.
nzbeatlefan’s statement that “A Day In The Life ” is much superior to “Good Morning, Good Morning” I’m sure resonates with many Beatles Bible Thumpers. I wonder how many share my blasphemous taste — that in fact it’s the other way around…

Good Morning Good Morning is my 3rd favourite on the album. I think it’s very underappreciated, and a lot better than a lot of their songs from 1967. 2nd favourite from SPLHCB would be Fixing A Hole , 1st…A Day In The Life .

I think Sgt Pepper is bar far the most `of it`s time` Beatle LP. A Day In The Life is a masterwork for sure and there are some other highlights (and as an album was FAR ahead of anything else around at the time) however if you take the songs on their own they aren`t as strong as the tracks on Revolver IMO.Don`t know if I would say it was overrated though..I mean compared to who? If compared to just the other Beatle LP`s then maybe…but not compared to anyone else from that timeframe no!

I agree with what perthblue said.
Plus, I personally rate Revolver and Abbey Road much higher than Sgt Pepper .

Revolver . A missed opportunity if you ask me, highly overrated, could have been so much better.
“Yellow Submarine “, “Good Day Sunshine ” and “Got To Get You Into My Life ” could have been replaced with much better, less annoyingly cheery songs.
And though they are good tracks, “And Your Bird Can Sing ” and “Dr. Robert” could have been a bit longer. They both feel like they could have been increased to 3 minutes. The first cuts off before the 2 minute mark, and the second cuts off about 10 seconds into 2 minutes. A shame.
I also can’t see what’s so special about “For No One ” – people say it’s beautiful and heartbreaking, but in my opinion the lyrics are very basic. A disappointment.
But, I love “Taxman “, “Love You To “, “Here, There And Everywhere “, “She Said She Said “, “I Want To Tell You ” and “Tomorrow Never Knows “. All great tracks. So it’s still a solid album regardless.
As for “Eleanor Rigby ” and “I’m Only Sleeping “… meh. Just okay.

I believe Sgt.Pepper is overrated(even if it stills a masterpiece) because I never got the “hype” around the album. I understand that it was a very important album at the time, but some things about it sounds dated today and I never actually felt that the album has a “good flow”, when “Within You Whithout You” plays after “Benefit…” the album lose his own flow and also “concept” (if there’s really one). And I mean Sgt. Pepper being best beatle album? Really? Some songs (Fixing A Hole , Good Morning) are really that better from other amazing songs of other albums? Revolvel, Abbey Road or even The White Album all seem a better choice as the best beatle album.

The love you take

Respectfully disagree. True, many of the songs on RS are popular, but the album itself, in whole, I think is closer to underrated. In terms of albums, I’d say Sgt. Pepper . Yeah, I love the album, like all Beatles albums, but… I don’t know. I tend to listen to it less than many other Beatles albums.

I find Pepper slightly overrated, but nothing much. If that album had Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane instead of 64 and, let’s say, Lovely Rita , it’d be the absolute wrecker in my opinion. But it isn’t, eh.
I find the White Album quite overrated. Out of 30 songs, quite a few feel like a filler – not to mention I consider the album has 28 songs (because Wild Honey Pie isn’t really cutting me as a song, and Revolution 9 is too special to be labeled as “just a song”). But I still like that album.

I do think Rubber Soul is a great album (particularly for it’s time), but I saw where Rolling Stone had it rated something like the fifth best album of all time. For me, it’s more like the fifth best Beatles album.
I think Sgt Peppers and the White Album live up to their hype.

I just feel that much of SP doesn’t “stick” quite as well over the years as, say, Revolver or even Rubber Soul . But that’s just me. In the end, it’s a matter of preference. It’s easy to dispute whether any Beatles album can really be overrated, because they’re all fantastic.

Yeah, it really is just a matter of preference. Either way youre just comparing one great album to another great album.
