Just broke out my Capitol Albums Vol. 2. It seems I have the first issue that has the incorrect mono for Beatles VI and RS. I’m sure it’s a little late to exchange those. Does anyone know the number that were released incorrect?
I believe the Duophonic stereo of the early albums really sounded like crap, but it has its place and like a lot of other people have said, it’s what they grew up listening to.
After some internal debating on whether or not to buy the box or just the singles to compliment Vol.1 and Vol.2, I’ll be getting the box.
Yes, it’s a little too late as they are out of print. I’m not sure how many sets were pressed that way, but at the least the first run was incorrect. You could probably get another box for about 30 dollars, but you might want to correspond with the seller and ask him or her questions, as I’m sure most sellers are not even aware of the error.
I actually bought it from a used CD store years ago, so it’s not really a big deal. I had no idea about the error until I stumbled into this thread about the US Box being released this month. Dug mine out the other day and found the error. Another way to tell besides the length of the CD is if “I’m Looking Through You ” has the false start on the mono. If it does, it’s a fold down from the stereo. The false start was on the US Stereo and not the US Mono.

Well, I’m glad you’re getting the new box set. There certainly has been a controversy around it, but I think it will probably sound good, and it definitely looks good.

For what it is worth I have some info from a very reliable source based on the promo disc – take it as you will. They say that the stereo versions are very close to the 2009 in sound, most of the mono are true mono but 3 of the tracks on the promo have some odd minor variation, and I quote:
“The mono And I Love Her and Any Time At All on the new set, for example, sound virtually identical to the versions on the mono Something New from Capitol Albums Vol. 1, but are very slightly hotter on the right channel (on the Capitol Albums set, the levels are perfectly matched.) I Need You , though, is slightly hotter on the left channel, and the levels seem to fluctuate very, very slightly, which they obviously shouldn’t for a true mono mix.”
All very odd, but overall it looks like they will sound fine.

What does “slightly hotter” mean in regards to a mix? Higher, louder, more echo, dryer?
All this makes me wonder if it wouldn’t have been easier if Apple had just have released the albums as they originally were, remastered of course, instead of all this messing about? Why do it simple when you can make it complicated?

It’s a bit unsettling, the more I read about how they’re fiddling with the mixes, the less excited I am for this set beyond the packaging…

I have been listening to the previews on iTunes for a while now – and they sound Fantabulous!!
Oh – and please don’t ask me for info on versions and variations – afraid I am not up on those and the 1 minute segments often make it hard to tell if there is a different bit in there anyway.
Colour me back to excited – if Amazon Canada actually have any to send to people who locked in the lower price. If I don’t hear from them in the next day or so I may cancel and get it from Import CDs who seem more reliable.

How have you been listening to the previews on iTunes? They are not available in the US on iTunes. Let me know so I can check them out. Thanks.

^ They are on the Australian iTunes store at the moment – I imagine they will show up in the others before too long or you can try and sign-in to ours.
[EDIT] I’m told you can click the flag at the bottom-right of the iTunes store screen to take a look.

Amazon.ca says mine will be delivered between January 31 and February 12. Not sure if I should wait and get the 50 dollar discount, or try and find a more expensive copy that I can have sooner. I’ll probably wait.

Very interesting. I already hear some interesting changes. The ‘And I Love Her ‘ from ‘A Hard Day’s Night ‘ album has McCartney’s vocals double tracked on both the stereo and mono versions unlike the original release where is is not. Also, ‘She’s A Woman ‘ and ‘I Feel Fine ‘ from ‘Beatles ’65’ has the mono with the added capitol reverb for both songs but the stereo versions are the UK masters. Very interesting!
I sure hope that each song has not been remixed just for this collection. I heard they were going to use the 2009 masters and some of the capitol unique masters only and not remix every song.

^ Yes, been some interesting comments around the place about variations and just how many unique US mixes there actually are.
^^ Same, I’ll wait – it’s also not on the website for the local stores so not sure when it will hit, though maybe one of the small independents will sneak one in

Wow, I contacted Amazon.ca again to ask if I would still receive my 9.98 discount if I upgrade my shipping speed. They said, no worries–we’ll give you priority shipping for free. So now the box arrives by January 24!
They must really like you – whenever I write to them about delivery of anything these days I get a form letter reply with no relation to my query.

I took the plunge last Sunday, spotted the box had dropped on Amazon UK to £106! Price didn’t last as it was soon up to £140+ . No-brainer really, despite having the Capitol boxes (I’m a sucker for boxes). I was going to purchase the individual CDs to make up for those missing from the Capitol boxes (despite reservations about the source material), but that would have set me back £40 or so anyway. Plus you get The Beatles Story, which I have on LP but haven’t played for at least 25 years – it’s that bad! Plus the albums come in a box (always a draw) which complements the Mono box nicely.
This reads like a confessional!
