It is fun to watch you all get as passionate about the sound of songs as the Paulettes get over Paul.

Lol.

So, if the Martin 1987 mixes are being used on Help and Rubber Soul , does that mean they are being used as “true mono mixes” to replace fold-downs? If so, does that mean it will sound no better than the 1987 cd, or is it being remastered?

The Hoffman discussion has me confused. Are we really getting a set that will not have either quality stereo or quality mono due to limiting? Will it sound worse, not better than 2009?

Colour me confused as well.  I think the limiting is just to make the mono and stereo on each CD sound consistent in level.  I think the suggestion is remastering on those 2 CDs you mention and proper mono mixes.  Once again, all speculation based on rumour and one set of waveform diagrams.  9 days to go, will see if we hear more soon.

[EDIT]  A couple of tech types popped into the threads and explained why there is no problem mixing mono on a stereo machine and explained some of the artefacts on the waveform diagram – they exist on all versions.  I’m less worried now – plus iTunes previews will be up soon so I can listen for myself.

That’s good news. Let me know if you read anything else important.

Will do.  I tried asking SH himself but he advised he can’t say ‘for contractual reasons’ – so he either has an early version or had something to do with the release.

I got this email from the company we use for a large chunk of our book purchases. I don’t think there is any exclusive content on their list. Am I right? Thanks in advance for any comments to help me out here.

I can’t see anything there that looks exclusive to me. Perhaps they are including things that they haven’t listed. If it was me, I email them asked them to define “exclusive content”. It may simply be that they are the only one listing one of the books at the moment! Looks like a misleading statement unless there is something they’re not being obvious about.

Thanks, mja. And to think I might have fallen paul-mccartney for their “exclusive” statement blue-meanie if I hadn’t found you and the other wonderful people who post to this forum. Thank you to mmm for starting the thread and to all of you fabulous people who have added to this discussion.

Someone on Hoffman cleared something up for me–I see that the 1987 remixes for Help and Rubber Soul  were used for the 2009 mono box.  So, there will be no inferior sounding tracks on the US box (as those sound fine to my ears).  The original mixes, I presume, are on the Capitol boxes released in the mid-2000’s, which I already have.  Also, if you have the mono box, you have the 1965 stereo mixes of Help and Rubber Soul .  So, if you have the mono box and the Capitol boxes you have everything for those albums.  It is disappointing the original mixes were not included on the US Albums set, but I’m sure it will sound fine.

Also, I contacted amazon.ca regarding the delay in providing a shipment date, and they assured me they have notified the supplier of the number of preorders and there should be no issue.

^ Thanks for the updates, especially re Amazon.ca.  I still have my Dylan box in back-order limbo with them and was a little concerned about this one.

^^^^ Yes AG, just to confirm what mja says – can’t see anything exclusive there unless it is one of those books.

Wow, the Canadians waived my shipping charges because I asked the question.

You deserved a break after some of the problems you’ve had with some of your recent purchases, Expert Textpert. I am happy for you.

Nice – same happened with my Dylan box but I had it on back-order so long I assumed that was why.

Thanks–that’s not the only break I got today.  I won 6 Ringo CD’s on eBay for $4.58 + 3.00 shipping (which really only felt like 5.44 total because I had 2.14 sitting in my Paypal balance).  This was the price after 6 bids, which I find kind of funny.

Just broke out my Capitol Albums Vol. 2.  It seems I have the first issue that has the incorrect mono for Beatles VI and RS.  I’m sure it’s a little late to exchange those.  Does anyone know the number that were released incorrect?

I believe the Duophonic stereo of the early albums really sounded like crap, but it has its place and like a lot of other people have said, it’s what they grew up listening to.

After some internal debating on whether or not to buy the box or just the singles to compliment Vol.1 and Vol.2, I’ll be getting the box.

Yes, it’s a little too late as they are out of print.  I’m not sure how many sets were pressed that way, but at the least the first run was incorrect.  You could probably get another box for about 30 dollars, but you might want to correspond with the seller and ask him or her questions, as I’m sure most sellers are not even aware of the error.
