So in other words by the CD’s and completely ignore iTunes, right.
Well, that’s certainly what I plan to do – but a lot of people reckon that if ‘mastered for iTunes’ is done well then they sound very good – but at least I can be pretty much sure that the CDs will sound great. On the sort of equipment most here are using (based on my other thread) iTunes will be just fine.
I also like all the physical stuff and don’t have any US packaging etc. – so looking forward to that and Beatles Story. I got a great early per-order price at Amazon Canada which is no longer available.

Sucks that Beatles story is only available in the box set, I’ll just get the incidental music from Help ! and A Hard Day’s Night . I already have some of the capitol albums on vinyl, Beatles ’65, Hey Jude , Rubber Soul , and Revolver . Since I already have all of the UK albums, no point in getting the same songs.

You’re not missing much, I had this in my collection many years ago and I think I only listened to it once. The only thing that I remember worthwhile on it was a brief snippet of ‘Twist & Shout’ live from the Hollywood Bowl. It’s from the 1964 show while the version of ‘Twist & Shout’ from the live Hollywood Bowl album released was from the 1965 show. One of those things that I suppose that it’s nice to say that you have, but likely never listen to it. There were other interview albums minus the narration that were much better, the two I remember which I did listen to more than once were that “Down Under” one, I think it was called ‘The Beatles Tell All Down Under’ or something like that which was a great document of their Far East Tour in 1964, and the other one was the ‘David Wigg Interviews’. ‘The Beatles Story’ was cheap and poorly done, in my opinion, but if you’re a hardcore collector than I guess you just gotta have it…:-)

Blog on fan backlash against the US Albums release.parlance
I dislike John Montagna’s closing argument (people are dying in the Third World so get over it) and he is wrong in that you are simply buying the packaging and can create the albums yourself from what is officially out-there at the moment: you can’t, you are still getting the unique mixes that were originally on the albums and not on the 2009 remasters – its the fake duophonic and/or echo drenched mixes that are being replaced.
What you are buying is not what was originally released in America in the 1960’s, its revisionism – again.

They are new remasters from the 2009 source, and not only have they tweaked the EQ to make the songs sound like they did in the USA in the 1960’s, it will be higher quality sound than the 2009 box. So, yes, it won’t be the duophonic and it won’t have the reverb, but it will be (supposedly) like the original US albums but better-sounding (without the duophonic mixes and the reverb).

Possibly – there is some concern around the place that they have done ‘odd’ things with the mono mix. I’m still trying to track this down as the mono songs are my main reason for buying the box. From the sampler it seems that a couple of the CDs are from the 1987 mix as well, not the 2009. It is starting to look like a very odd beast, guess we will find out in a few weeks.

^ Oh – I see it now has 7 parts
Posted this on the SH forums; anyone here have access to a disc to advise?:
“OK – I’ve seen the waveform diagram and the speculation that they have messed up the mono mix. Can someone who has a promo CD please let us know what it SOUNDS like – never mind the theory and minute variations on some test equipment. I am spending what is for me a significant amount of money primarily to get the mono versions of these songs and any accurate info on how it will sound would be great. Thank You in advance.”

I read through most of it….As an aside, it never occurred to me that my Capitol Red Album had duophonic mixes on it. I think I have the Capitol red one and the UK blue one.
It looks to me as if everyone is freaking out and jumping to conclusions because this one guy ran a test and found out something sounded slightly louder in one channel and thus was probably sourced from the 1987 mono mix?
I really don’t care. We’ll find out when we get it. It’s not a necessary purchase for me, it’s entirely superfluous. I have the 2009 stereo and mono boxes, and I have the 2004 and 2006 Capitol boxes, so it’s not like I NEED more boxes.

If so, do you think they’ll correct it? I hope we won’t end up having to send for replacement discs from Universal. And who is reporting it?
The usual ‘them’ types – based upon the waveform diagrams – which is why I am trying to find out from someone who has the promo (hopefully the person who did the waveform who seems reliable) what they sound like.

Forums can be informative, but then they can also be annoying….if I’ve already made up my mind to buy something, I don’t really appreciate a million people saying it’s a waste of money, especially based on the opinion of some forum member I’ve never heard of whose opinion we “should trust.”

^ Hmm – yes, but apparently the waveform was done by someone who runs a popular Beatles breakfast radio show in the States – but of course he has not shown up on the forums again to tell us what the sound is like.
I suspect they are only balancing / matching the mono and stereo levels on each album so they sound OK if you listen straight through – I would like confirmation but will buy anyway.
