What we actually have is a set of George Martin mixes. The mono mixes of Doctor Robert I’m Only Sleeping  and And Your Bird Can Sing  were done for Yesterday and Today on 12 May 1966. On 20 May stereo mixes were done, AYBCS didn’t differ, but the US got RS1 and the UK used RS2 for IOS and DR. On 6 June 1966 UK mono mixes for AYBCS and IOS were done, with the UK mono for DR following on 21 June.

I can forgive Apple for not including the less common mixes on the box set, and opting instead to include the mixes that most people are familiar with…for most of the people who bought the original Capitol album of Y&T, the US Albums box contains the mono mix they are familiar with (which is the authentic mix, the stereo being fake).

I can also see the point of view of the collector who wants all the mixes remastered.

My head hurts just reading about all the mixes and what’s on the albums and what’s not. a-hard-days-night-ringo-13 I don’t know how you guys can keep up with all that; it’s quite admirable.

I love it, quite simply, so it holds my interest. All the little nuances here and there like RM3 of When I Get Home where you get an alternate John vocal for half a line due to a mixing flub back in June ’64 when they lowered the other vocal he did for it. Recently i realised that in the very last verse of I’ve Just Seen A Face for some reason the only word double-tracked is the very last one: “met”. Obviously Paul has having a bit of fun when doing that vocal track. Makes it even more of a fun listen.

You should see what’s been occurring on the Steve Hoffman Forum – one ran for 12 threads, thousands of posts, very informative and addictive reading.

I think that one has been closed as it was going around in circles, a new one opened by the mods as to whether you simply like the box or not –

I read lots of the discussion when I was deciding whether to cancel my preorder or not.  I’m glad I didn’t.  The poll says 40.1% dislike/hate it, which means a majority are fine with it.

Oooo… I started something here without even hearing the box set! 12,000+ posts eh! And I’ve only picked up on two tracks so far!

The stereo was used on reel-to-reel, 4-track, 8-track and cassette until 1969 when it was used on a “Longine” edition.  That doesn’t exactly make it common.  That means that for at least three years the majority of people who bought it only had the mono mix and the fake stereo.

The stereo wasn’t fake, but the duophonic was. That’s the point I was making. The early vinyl “stereo” versions of Y&T that used duophonic mixes were fake, but the “stereo” versions that used the stereo mixes that were made for the album, were in no way fake. Call the duophonic fake, but not the stereo!

When I read you saying “the stereo being fake”, it read to me that you were saying GMs stereo mixes were fake, which they obviously are not.

That’s not what I’m saying.  When I say “fake stereo,” I mean “duophonic,” which is fake stereo.  What I’m saying is that yes, true stereo did exist, but not on vinyl versions until the one that was released in 1969.  And even then, it looks like most later versions (from the “70’s and beyond” mentioned above) included the UK mix, not the “American” one.  So it’s not a sin that they made the choice they did.

I keep imagining this conversation taking place in someone’s basement with all the guys sitting around a table throwing out ideas and fiddling around with stereo knobs.

I’m just sitting over here on a high stool with my elbow on my knee and my chin on my hand watching curiously back and forth. Does anyone need their drink topped off? I’ll put out some more pizza rolls and chips & dip.

I’m okay with that scenario as long as Mom doesn’t come down and tell us to move out or get jobs.

When you say chips and dip do you mean UK or US chips? And what is a pizza roll?

So the pizza is in that roll thingy? Hmmm. And we Scots are meant to invent strange foods.ahdn_paul_01 I’m willing to give it a go but is this the classic take a bite and lose the whole of your mouth due to the billion degree heat that is unleashed snack? Chips and dip are good but any peppers (the vegetable not the seasoning) and i will be needing urgent medical help.

But MichWond do you have the most up to date remasters which have been slightly tweaked and that lovely booklet that comes with that lovely box. And what about The Beatles Story, even tho it is something you’ll never bother or want to listen to? All for the reasonable cost of auctioning off a kidney.

Yes, you can take skin off the roof of your mouth big-time with those little things. I’ll keep them at the right temp so as to not hurt anyone, don’t worry, mmm.

Well, no Rotel for you. Glad we have 2 other choices to offer you.

I’ve rather set my testicles on fire than buy “Reloved”.

a-hard-days-night-ringo-8 LOL.

I gave a listen to the first track of that ”New album”. NOPE. a-hard-days-night-paul-11a-hard-days-night-ringo-13 The Beatles songs do not work on remixes like that (only if they were done with things that they actually recorded – like LOVE).

Let me take you down 'cause I'm going to...Strawberry Fields.
