Wogblog reported of the upcoming January release of The US Albums boxset, featuring both mono and stereo mixes on the same cd (but not all the original mixes as released thru-out the 60’s: all the duophonic and echo drenched mixes are being replaced by the 2009 UK remasters) – most of the albums will be available individually for a limited time.

I cannot believe Capitol is going to do this. All you need to do now is create your own playlists putting each album in the sequencing like the US albums and you are all set. No need to spend your money.

There are four instrumental tracks on the Hard Days Night soundtrack, which were not available on CD before. So, as I was telling my wife, you could buy this if you wanted to spend 40 dollars per instrumental.

Not quite, Inner Light. There were several alternate/early UK mixes that appeared on Capitol. It seems these rare mixes, some of which differ quite a lot, have been kept, but that the American – shall we say – “remixes” have been dropped.

The release is a natural step as there is a large amount of fans who are willing to pay for hard copies of the US albums with all the artwork. Its a no-brainer for Apple as they will make money from it and it wont do any harm or damage to the brand as these albums were what the America fans grew up with.
Well they should be but Apple have been mucking about and changing fake US stereo mixes with true UK stereo. May not sound a big deal, may even sound great to some (yeay, no more crappy rubbish), but its not what US fans got back in the 60’s and isn’t that the point of it?
All the unique true mixes are here – you still get the alternate I’m Only Sleeping , the single tracked And I Love Her , the false starts at the beginning of I’m Looking Through You , the alternate mix of The Word with the vocals all on the same channel, its just the fake stereo and the echo drenched I Feel Fine and She’s A Woman that have been replaced.
I’ll pass the box over and maybe when it’s on sale pick it up but it’s not a must have as i can playlist all the albums anyway, a few individuals i might pick up like Something New, the OST Help ! or A Hard Day’s Night soundtrack.

I know the set will contain some unique mixes that Martin produced for the American market but I dislike when they tamper with the songs. Taking out the ‘Duophonic Stereo’ and songs with added reverb should be included. That is the way it was released in this country and what we grew up with. I love ‘The Beatles Second Album’ with all the reverb added. It gives the songs a little more punch but oh well, I guess you can’t always get what you want as the Stones said once.

As I noted in a post which may have vanished overnight; I don’t have the mono set and the only ones on the net seem to be Chinese fakes, so I am still considering getting this for the mono mix of their early songs (plus the 2 soundtrack CDs and the Story disc). So for me it will actually be 12 CDs I don’t have (all the mono stuff) and just the Hey Jude CD will repeat what I have (but be nostalgic for me as it was the 2nd LP I ever bought – after Let It Be ).
[EDIT] I have just pre-ordered. I’m really looking forward to this; both a new way of hearing these songs plus getting an official mono version. I know it doesn’t have the later albums but I am satisfied with the stereo mix on those – even though I hear Pepper’s was mixed primarily for the mono.

The Capitol box set from 2004 has all that reverb and echo. I got that just recently and I’m not going to lie, I’m really digging those duophonic mixes, even if it’s not what the Fabs intended. I’m getting the 2nd box set from 2006 and then buying the other albums from the new box set (Yesterday and Today, Revolver US version) individually once they’re out.

The mono White Album is also different to a handful of the stereo songs and well worth getting (even if not an official copy since thats stuck in a £200 box); tracks run to different lengths, have different overdubs, have less overdubs, different levels in the vocals etc. I suppose the most well known is Helter Skelter which omits the second fade in with the “blisters on my fingers” comment and different drumming in parts.

Also as noteworthy is the speed difference on Don’t Pass Me By , which shifts Ringo’s vocal an octave!

^ and ^^ Thanks folks – I’m not really into the slightly different version thing, which is why a lot of the bootlegs and the 2nd volume of BBC are not of great interest to me just yet. The mono vs stereo thing is more significant so will do for now. In a year or two, when I have digested the big stack I have at the moment, I am more likely to start exploring these variations.
I must say it is nice of Capitol to have the mono and stereo together, though the odd mix of old versions on some songs and 2009 for others is neither here nor there as far as US fans are concerned. Since I already have the 2009 stereo mix, I would have preferred the old ‘doctored’ stereo versions just to hear what they were like.

If you do decide to preorder – shop around. I placed an order with Amazon USA which would have been around $A185, cheaper than the locals who are all charging over 200. Then I happened to see the post parlance put up about this set on wogblog and one of the comments there said it was cheaper on Amazon’s Canadian site. Is it ever! $A140 or so including shipping, about 80 pounds, which is WAY cheaper than the price on Amazon UK (it would have cost me $A270 from the UK!!!).
Luckily I was able to cancel the USA order and have now placed it in Canada – will see how it all turns out.

Further to me talking to myself: When I pre-ordered this it was #1 on the Amazon .ca music sales chart – for a boxed set with a questionable mixed bunch of stereo transfers that is amazing.
Beatles sell. Apple know this.
Apple know this and yet completely ignore it 95% of the time and give us nothing but tat (there is always a way to do a bit of Apple bashing).
And in case i forget trcanberra, enjoy the box when you get it. I know you’ll get a buzz from the albums.

I just ordered the 2004 boxes at a nice price. I don’t see any point in buying the new one if it’s not faithful to the originals. I will probably pick up those individual albums like you.

On one hand, I really want this upcoming set, mainly just to have the whole set of US albums and the mini-LP replicas to match my mono box set. On the other hand, I grew up listening to the UK versions so I’m not sure how much I’d actually listen to these, especially since they’re not going to be true replicas of the US album mixes. My parents still have their original Capitol albums from the 1960s, I should try to dig those out to compare to these once they come out.

Question…Of the following, which actually contain anything different than what is available on the UK stereo and mono boxes?
Yesterday and Today
…I know that A Hard Day’s Night contains some instrumental tracks not previously available on CD…but will these other three just contain the same songs we already have in different order?

Yes. And if they were going to hold 100% true to the original US albums, they’d have the different/wacky mixes, fake stereo, added reverb (the infamous “Dexter mixes”), and botched edits (like the hi-hat intro to All My Loving and the false start to I’m Looking Through You ). But alas, they are going to use the 2009 stereo mixes instead. It really sounds like it’s just going to be the mixes we already have but in the order and album breakdown of the original US Capitol albums. It’s almost an exercise in “why bother?” at least from this vantage point.
