Does anyone remember the beatles Rarities…not sure if its on cd…
Pretty sure it was LP only, and basically replaced by Past Masters on double CD. I had the old blue-covered one when I had the Beatles boxed LP set back in the day.

Different US and UK LPs were released in their respective countries, originally the LP was meant and promoted as exclusive to the box that contained all the original UK albums but not too soon later it was available on its own – probably a good thing as it meant fans didn’t have to buy all the UK albums again for 1 LP.
There is now no need for a UK cd release as it’s basically a skimmed down Past Masters , the US has a couple of alternate mixes that are still not on cd but with the mono box out there its not that much of a necessity (i think And I Love Her and Penny Lane are the two still not officially available) – however with the US albums looking like they are going to be released individually in January it might make an appearance.
As with every Beatles album ever released its widely available on bootleg.

The UK Rarities LP was probably the biggest fan ripoff in The Beatles’ entire officially released product history, from then to now.
The original UK albums were collected as a boxed set (blue box with gold print: there was also a mono box in red, collecting the mono albums. I don’t recall ever seeing a red sleeve Rarities, so I don’t think there was one). There was no Past Masters at that time, so all the Past Masters -type tracks were collected on a single LP called Rarities. It was only supplied as part of the boxed set so, if you were a completist, you had to buy the boxed set – which included all the albums which you already had, at full price – in order to get it.
Retailers, having established a supply/demand situation, simply removed it from the box, sold it at a premium, and put the other albums in the sames racks – they sold steadily, anyway.
EMI, recognising that they had been thoroughly beaten, did what they had assured everyone they wouldn’t do, and issued it as a single, standalone album. With a subtly different sleeve, correcting errors which had been on the original sleeve. So, if you were a completest…..
The US Rarities was an entirely different album, much more intelligently assembled with, for the US market, real rarities (ie. some UK mixes which were noticeably different to the UK catalogue).

It’s out on CD, just not an official Apple release. You’ll find them on Ebay and other sites.

I always loved the extra trumpet at the ending of Penny Lane ……

I’ll never understand why you’d buy the unofficial bogus cds ($27 for the UK when you have all the tracks anyway!!!) when a little searching online will enable you to download them for free. ‘Penny Lane ‘ on the US variation isn’t even the proper mix as they lazily took the stereo mix and lumped on the mono trumpet part.

I only had this as a cassette tape………I played it a lot in the car….. I didn’t have, ‘You know my name’ in any other format or the Across The Universe original.
I keep my Beatles CDs and the CDs of 50 or so other artists. I gave all my Beatles vinyl, (pretty complete) LPs 7″ and Eps to my son…….and told him to look after them.
When I moved countries I held a car-boot and flogged a lot of LPs for a pittance……A boy scout beat me down to less than a fiver for Donovan’s ‘From a Flower to a Garden’ Boxed double LP’ and then word got back to me he’d sold it that night on Ebay for 50 pounds.
Hold on to things……
After discovering The Beatles and girls at about 13 and deciding it was time to grow up I gave away all my Marvel first editions and old DC comics I’d been collecting since I was 7.
I watched a program a few years ago where this guy, to prove how much comics were being collected for these days said, ‘I’m going to spend a million dollars in one minute.’
He held up and called out the values of 10 comics until it totaled $1000,000…..I’d had and gave away 8 of those 10 comics……????
But I’m not bitter ………I still love the Beatles……and girls.
