SFF and PL not ending up on Sgt. Pepper is one of those unintended strokes of luck that history is all the better for. Those songs are spectacular, of course, but not only would they have not fit in at all with the album (in terms of sentiment but also the overall sound) but Sgt. Pepper as we know it would be completely different and I’m not sure it’d be for the better.

I agree. There’s something about the SSF/PL single that is magical in its own stand-alone way. Two songs, and yet so mind-blowing. Put them on Sgt. Pepper and not only do you further water down the concert vibe they were (perhaps half-heartedly) going for, but you also change the ”feel”- and importance – of the two songs themselves.
Moving along in our God given ways, safety is sat by the fire/Sanctuary from these feverish smiles, left with a mark on the door.

See, that’s where I disagree! I think many people would’ve learned to love the lp just as much if not more with those two. And then found it unimaginable without them. But YMMV I guess.

I think so too. I also think the order of the songs doesn’t matter. What does it matter if Within You Without You comes before Lovely Rita or after it or whatever?
It’s hard to pick 2 tracks to dump though, and most of them wouldn’t fit on MMT. With that having said, MMT wouldn’t have been as good as it is without SFF and Penny Lane . They also fit on MMT much better than on Pepper.
I always think MMT is a bit underrated. It’s definitely one of my favourite Beatlesalbums. I mean come on, except for SFF and Penny Lane it has songs like I Am The Walrus , Fool on the hill, All You Need Is Love etc. All great songs.
On the White Album subject though, I would have liked the single version of Revolution on it, but that’s because I prefer it over Revolution 1 . As for Hey Jude , I don’t know if that would be good. It kind of fits the album, but at the same time it doesn’t, if that makes sense. It’s too big or something.

It’s the removing I hate more than the altering! If Capitol had seen fit to include “Paperback Writer /Rain ” on Revolver without removing the three John songs that found their way to “Yesterday and Today”, I’d be delighted.

Indeed, as John later said, take away the title track, its reprise and “With A Little Help From My Friends ,” and Sgt. Pepper is just another album of standalone songs in mostly random order. I’ve never gotten this ‘concert vibe’ from it to which fabfouremily is referring. And, unlike DrBeatle, I think the inclusion of SFF and PL would be for the better, since they’re far and away better songs than any of the Paul songs that DID end up on the album. (I’d have also put “Only A Northern Song ” on there at the expense of one of those Paul songs as well. [deflector shield up] ) I’ve actually put together my own preferred version of Sgt. Pepper as an iTunes playlist (ditto Let It Be ), and it’s the version to which I now usually listen.
It doesn’t matter which 2 Sgt. Pepper castoffs (3 actually, since OANS also being on the album would’ve most likely returned “Baby, You’re a Rich Man” to its original status as one of the 4 exclusive Yellow Submarine contributions) would have ‘fit’ onto MMT because that second side was an afterthought; whatever non-album songs were available were put on there. Yes, it may have made MMT a weaker album (so to speak) today, but it would’ve strengthened Sgt. Pepper (and its reputation), IMO.
On the White Album subject though, I would have liked the single version of Revolution on it, but that’s because I prefer it over Revolution 1 . As for Hey Jude , I don’t know if that would be good. I don’t see why “Hey Jude ” wouldn’t have fit on the White Album , as it turned out to be pretty much an ‘anything-goes’ sort of work, and it’s that eclecticism that gives it its personality, IMO. Take away the more tossed-off tracks like “Wild Honey Pie ,” “Why Don’t We Do It in the Road?” and the “Can You Take Me Back” link between “Cry Baby Cry ” and “Revolution 9 ” and it becomes a fairly rigid, straight-laced album. That said, I’m perfectly fine with “Hey Jude ” not being on it.

I love that Can You Take Me Back bit between Cry Baby Cry and Revolution 9 !
I think Hey Jude is just too long and spectacular to just end up as an album track. I think they made the right decision. Unless they put it both on the album and as a single.

While those two songs would have fit very well on the album, there’s nothing I really could bring myself to take off. It just doesn’t feel right removing anything of it, because to me Sgt. Pepper as about as perfect as an album can get. What I think The Beatles should have done after Pepper, was do one last concert and turn it into a live album. Because as great as Sgt. Pepper is, the live feel that it tried to create only applied to a few of the songs and it didn’t feel like a concert overall.
This is what the track listing would be, and I want to know if you guys can guess the story i’m trying to tell through these songs:
1. Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band
2. With A Little Help From My Friends
4. Penny Lane
5. Lovely Rita
9. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
10. Yesterday
11. Getting Better
12. Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)

I agree that these two songs are better than some others on Pepper (Strawberry Fields being one of my all time favorites) but they definitely fit on MMT, not Sgt. Pepper .
They wouldn’t have gone with the flow of Pepper as much as the songs originally on it.

The challenge / parlor game – not my original idea but one I heard someone mention on a podcast: construct an album from songs on Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour (and also Only A Northern Song , All Together Now and It’s All Too Much which were also recorded at the time as well..) You may disagree with the premise and believe both albums are perfect, and of course everything Beatles is at least still Beatles. But what would your album look like? The only rule is that it must be less than 50 minutes total running time…
Here’s mine:
Side One:
1. Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (2:03)
2. With A Little Help From My Friends (2:44)
3. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds (3:29)
4. The Fool On The Hill (2:59)
5. Only A Northern Song (3:25)
6. Hello Goodbye (3:29)
7. Strawberry Fields Forever (4:07)
Side Two:
1. Within You Without You (5:05)
2. Good Morning Good Morning (2:41)
3. Penny Lane (3:01)
4. Baby You’re A Rich Man (3:01)
5. I Am The Walrus (4:36)
6. Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band Reprise (1:19)
7. A Day In The Life (5:37)
Total Running time = 47:36
I’m hesitating on Baby You’re A Rich Man , which is a great B side but I’m not 100% sure it fits here.
I like the idea of putting two George songs on. But am I giving Paul short shrift?

What would’ve been interesting (not saying better, just interesting) is if they waited until December for Sgt. Pepper ‘s release and made it a double album like so and in turn, had a Sgt. Pepper movie instead of a Magical Mystery Tour Movie, here’s the track listing:
Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band:
Side 1:
1. Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band (remixed in such a way so that when the Billy Shears part comes in, instead of going C D E, it goes C D F and then it plays the entire Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) but instead of crossfading into A Day In The Life , it cross fades into the 2nd verse of Sgt. Pepper without vocals or lead guitar and then fades out, similar to Yer Blues )
2. With A Little Help From My Friends
3. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
7. Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite
Side 2:
8. Penny Lane
9. When I’m 64
10. Lovely Rita
11. Carnival Of Light (fade into next track)
Side 3:
1. Good Morning, Good Morning (fade into next track)
4. Flying
6. Within You, Without You (after the 1st chorus, play Blue Jay Way up to and including the 2nd chorus and then play the solo and after the 2nd chorus, play Blue Jay Way starting directly after the 2nd chorus)
8. I Am The Walrus (full stereo mix)
Side 4:
9. Only A Northern Song (full stereo mix)
10. Hello, Goodbye
11. Baby, You’re A Rich Man
12. All Together Now

This may well be happening.
From Wogblog
According to The Sunday Times, a New edition of Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band is planned for release this year, with the single tracks “Penny Lane” and “Strawberry Fields Forever” added.
The newspaper says that “The 50th anniversary of the release of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band this June will be marked with a worldwide re-release — and for fans it will mean at last hearing the album as the band had intended it to sound”.
According to the newspaper’s sources, the anniversary relaunch on June 1 will reinstate the two tracks, which George Martin agreed to release as a single several months before the album was in the shops. The Sunday Times quotes Paul McCartney:”We were then moving away from screaming girls’ gigs where no one could hear anything in the concert halls any more and were working on Sgt Pepper. John wrote this absolutely amazing song, Strawberry Fields Forever, for the new album and I was frankly a bit jealous, so I went home and wrote Penny Lane. It worked and we wanted them as the main tracks on Sgt Pepper.”
The Sunday Times also writes that “Although details of the re-release are being kept secret, it is understood that all parties involved have co-operated fully, including McCartney, Ringo Starr and Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison”.
What a pointless release if this happens.
And what a massive disappointment if all we get for the 50th anniversary is a reassembled ‘Pepper’ with a slightly different tracklisting. Give us something to get excited about not something we can compile in iTunes within 5 seconds!!

I thought this was just another “what if they had done this” type thread until I read that they were actually doing it. Then I opened the thread to find it was originally a “what if they had done this” type thread. I guess that’s what happens on a forum where no one starts new threads for fear of them being merged.

In that little bit of a write up, I would agree with you…
If we were still in the age of vinyl and/or cassette tapes where we had to switch over to a new record or tape to hear SFF or PL after the SPLHCB album had completed and never getting to hear it in the album run through then I get weighing in on a new running order subject. I am a big fan of the album as it has been since June 1967. Other wise, I will make playlists and/or even shuffle the album on my iPod and there I have a new order. No cheesy/pointless 50th anniversary set with the same remastered tracks from 2009 is needed here… I can make that for free any day.

Truth is, there never was a Pepper tracklisting that included SFF and/or Penny Lane . That idea came about AFTER they had given the two tracks away to being a single, and they had lost the centrepieces to their planned reflection on their Liverpool childhoods.
Adding these doesn’t make it the Pepper they imagined. If it does turn out that this is all the 50th anniversary release is, it would make the Movie Medley look like a work of creative genius.
We would all be justified in treating Apple like the mythical Hamburg nuns John is rumoured to have pissed on from a height.
