What’s the bigger deal: the re-release of Sgt Pepper or McCartney turning (yikes) 75 on June 18th?
[an obvious corollary is that McCartney was just 24 when he (co-) created Sgt Pepper and just turning 25 at its release. What were YOU doing (or will be doing) at age 24???!!!]

I’ve just heard the 2017 mix and now I’m hearing the sessions.
The remix certainly packs a punch. As is the case with such things, certain elements of the music get emphasized, which creates a slightly different atmosphere. But we still have the original to hear…so I can’t complain about having another way to hear the album. There are things about it that I definitely like.

The new mix of the album is generally speaking pretty damn good. “shes leaving home” is the big revelation for me,it just sounds perfect now and the beauty of the vocals comes shining though. The indian instrumentation on “Within You Without You ” sounds brighter somewhat too.
Disc2 was ok,but I’m not sure its worth getting if you already have “anthology2”.

Yeah in buying the 2CD set I was more interested in the outtakes and instrumental tracks but after spending some time with them both, the remixed album is the real keeper here. Maybe there’s more good stuff on the big 4CD set.

I found the remix to be a real let down (heard thru earphones), only ‘With A Little Help ‘ stood out for me as being an improvement.
There are glaring errors with the mixes of ‘Mr Kite’ and ‘A Day In The Life ‘, not keen on playing trace the note on ‘Lucy’ and ‘Within/Without You’ sounded like George was way out front of the musicians. I will play it thru a proper speak at some point so my opinion may chance but I’m a little full of ‘Pepper’ at the moment.

The mono version gives you the proper run-out groove, @Expert Textpert. Since 1987 they’ve only been releasing variations on a locked-groove version.

Too bad that Pepper suit (and Paul’s too) wasn’t in the Pepper display at the V&A exhibit.

I prefer all of the remixed tracks compared to the 2012 stereo remaster. I’ve found that it definitely sounds better through speakers and the vinyl seems to generally sound better then the cd. I’ve heard some youtubers saying similar things in their reviews.
It’s down to personal preference I guess. I think the remix sounds punchier, fuller and more modern overall.
Funnily enough, I noticed less of a difference in With A Little Help From My Friends compared to most of the other tracks for some reason.

Headphones may be a difference experience but for me the powerful effect of the build-up in the orchestral sections and the ‘ahh’s’ in ‘ADITL’ are now gone, same with the instrumental passage in ‘Within/out You’. As I said above all the subtlety has gone from the original mix and it’s now all splodged out for all to hear. Maybe that’s modern music and I am behind, maybe not. I know some folk will dismiss me as just holding onto the past.

I just spent the better part of an hour unboxing and admiring the Super Deluxe box set. Getting it home was a bit of an adventure; I didn’t expect the packaging to be that large or that heavy! But man, was it worth it! The 3D sleeve is really cool, and the book is incredible. I already knew most of the photos, but seeing all those original lyric sheets and recording notes was a lovely surprise. I have only read bits of it, and what I’ve read has been thoroughly entertaining (including the glaring error in Paul’s foreword). I love how the 6 discs are packaged inside a remake of the original record sleeve, and the alternate cover shots on the individual disc sleeves. The posters, which are the same as the ones that came with the 1967 release are great, and I loved how the box was designed to look like an EMI tape box. In short: Fab Gear! I haven’t had time to listen to the Pepper sessions yet, but for now, I am a very happy Kitty!

Mine will come in a week, I’m excited just to have gotten a £4.30 refund on my preorder 😀 The packaging sounds wonderful, but as for the remix I’m keeping my powder dry. I’ve been through the 1994 CD release, the 2009 mono/stereo remasters, and frankly it’s the quality takes that I’ve been waiting for.

To me, the music sounds incredible. Whilst some of the material has already been used in LOVE, much of it was completely new to me. The bits of chatter are a real treat, too. But YMMV. We’ve already seen that MMM doesn’t like the remix, so not everyone is too chuffed.
