Ignoring every other thought that comes into my head I have a question
How the f**k did they get from take 6 of ‘Penny Lane ‘ to the finished version? I looked at my iPod wondering what the hell I was listening to.

Which Amazon site did you order it off? US?
It would be interesting to hear your initial impressions once you’ve heard it
UK.
Only heard up to the second ‘Penny Lane ‘.
Thoughts.
Sound quality is incredible, far superior to the boots.
‘Strawberry Fields Forever ‘ is well known if you have bootlegs but still wonderful to hear and it’s about time take 26 was available commercially. Apple should be making the whole recording sessions available somewhere down the line.
‘When I’m Sixty-Four ‘ is the basic track with some unheard Paul vocal doodlings. Very cool to hear tho your brain is filling in the gaps where the overdubs would go.
Take 6 of ‘Penny Lane ‘ is a serious ‘WTF’ as it sounds nothing like ‘Penny Lane ‘ for almost all of it (see above post).
The studio drop-in of Paul and George discussing vocal parts whilst hearing the track back in their headphones is a blast and you can feel you are right there. Incredible to hear such a moment and makes you wonder why we got the crappy pointless remix on ‘Anthology’.
Only 8 tracks in (i’m skipping the 2015 and 2017 remixes) and I was always going to be delighted as it’s unheard Beatles but jeez oh, if you haven’t heard these and you like the Beatles get the deluxe and ignore all talk of remixes. Finally, after all these years of waiting, we have what we wanted. And they’re clean.

I’d just like to say, from my few moments of comparison so far, the new stereo mix cleans up the tracks so much. The tracks I’ve A/B’d with the 2012 mixes had added depth and clarity, no noticable tape noise like on the earlier mixes. They just seem more lifelike.
Haven’t listened through the whole album yet, or the new material. But I can say these are gold. And though I was hesitant because these happen every so often, I am now sure I must order the record.

Let me answer your f*****g question and explain why the bloody hell take 6 of Penny Lane sounds like it does.
Very simple, Paul McCartney wanted the song to have a clean American sound, so the piano is the only thing on the original track and everything else was overdubbed at a later point, similar to Why Don’t We Do It In The Road and the McCartney album.

I have no doubt mmm knows exactly how Penny Lane , and take 6, was recorded, @Dark Overlord. Mark Lewisohn describes the process very well, as does Joe in his article (no need to link to another site).
The surprise, as I found, is in hearing it rather than reading a description of it. I also found it one of the big shockers.

Do you think if I went into Audacity and OOPSed the regular version of Penny Lane with take 6 that it would remove all of the piano so I can hear just the overdubs, I would love to hear the guitar better.

Just to clarify for you, @Dark Overlord, take 6 is not simply a piano track. It is PL as it stood at the end of 29 December. ML describes it thus:
[The] piano went onto track one of the four-track tape. Happiest with the sixth take he then began to apply the overdubs, working alone in the studio. Onto track two of the tape went another piano, played this time through a Vox guitar amplifier with added reverberation to give an entirely different sound. Onto track three went yet another piano, played at half-speed and then speeded-up on replay to give another different effect. A tambourine was also shaken for this overdub. Superimposed onto track four were two-tone high-pitch whistles from a harmonium, again fed through a Vox guitar amplifier, various strange percussion effects, one of them sounding at times like a machine gun, and extremely fast and sometimes drawn-out cymbal notes.

If you mean that that was the end of work on it for 1966, it wasn’t.
They returned to it on the 30th, with a reduction mix into take 7, onto which Paul’s lead, and John’s backing, vocal were overdubbed.
Then they were done for 1966.

I am waiting to listen to the remasters until the 50th anniversary, but my big box arrived today. Came with some sweet posters, as well as a nice big book that I am currently reading. I am curious to hear this take 6 of Penny Lane .

Oh. I was cooking my dinner. Thanks.
@Dark Overlord, since you haven’t heard the take please don’t a) treat me like an idiot and speak to me in such a way (and i’d say it if you spoke to anyone on the forum like that, be polite) and b) offer advice and feedback when you haven’t a clue what it is about – in this case it is hearing not reading some page on a website about the creation of the song.

Sorry about that, it’s just that you said how the f*** instead of how the hell or simply how, so I felt it was necessary of me to replay with an f bomb of my own, it was intended to be taken comically like a little , I wasn’t planning on it being like a . As for the take, I just assumed that take 6 was the piano track they used as the backing track for the final recording, I should’ve listened to it, maybe I can find on the internet somewhere.
