Interesting thought.
Did Paul get the inspiration for the Sgt. Pepper album cover from a Swedish brass band?
Here’s a link to the story.
The EP by music collective Mercblecket was released in 1964, a full three years before the Fab Four unveiled their creative tour-de-force, Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band, in 1967.
The Mercblecket EP, which ironically features the band performing covers of four Beatles songs and is titled Mercblecket Beats The Beatles, has a cover featuring several of the musicians standing centre-stage in front of a bass drum daubed with the band’s name, while wearing military guardsman’s jackets. They are flanked on either side and behind by other members of the group.
The Sgt. Pepper cover famously features the Fab Four wearing guardsman’s jackets while standing in front of a bass drum daubed with the album’s title. On both sides, and behind them, is an array of black and white cutouts of the band’s heroes.
Although the sleeve was designed by Peter Blake and Jann Haworth, they were working from an ink drawing by MCCartney showing the basic concept for the artwork.
It is believed a member of Mercblecket, Roger Wallis, gave MCCartney a copy of the record when The Beatles visited Sweden in 1964.
Record dealer Jorgen Johansson has tracked down a rare copy and is trying to unravel the mystery.
He writes, “(I) talked to Roger Wallis on the phone only a couple of days ago, he still lives here and he confirmed that he personally gave the EP to Paul at their hotel as he wanted a copy, and Roger Wallis hadn’t thought about the resemblance until i mentioned it to him… The only person who can really confirm this sensational story is Mr MCCartney himself (Hey Paul, if you read this get in touch) but with the info above it certainly leads into the direction that he was somehow inspired by this very obscure Swe EP (sic) from ’64 when he made that ink drawing to the world’s most famous LP, Sgt Pepper . Look at the Swedish EP and you realize the resemblance.”

There has been some heated discussion on this possibility elsewhere on the internet.
It seems to me that any band with a drum in front of it could have been their inspiration. While it could well have been the album in the story, it is also a common pose for brass bands from the 19-20th centuries; so it could equally have been any old picture from a magazine or family album.
It will be interesting to hear if this record was released before they were in Sweden that year. If it was and is indeed the inspiration, like many things they touched – it would be another example of taking something ordinary and making it transcendental 😉

There’s a picture in Tune In of Jim McCartney’s band and audience members all standing around a bass drum which says “Jim Mac’s Band” so surely that was the inspiration.

Why doesn’t Paul hold the trumpet considering his trumpet origins? Was he banned from ever being allowed near one after his efforts on ‘Only A Northern Song ‘?

So you may know how that Hitler, among other controversial figures, was considered to be on the Sgt. Pepper cover. A cutout was even made of him and can be seen in the behind the scenes photos. So I though, “I wonder what they did with that Hitler cutout after the photoshoot? Where is it today?” But then I realized, “Wait a second! what did they do with all the other cutouts?” I was hoping somebody could help me out with this question. I’ve heard the stories of some of the props and what happened to them later, but haven’t heard about the cutouts. Are they still around? Have they been sold at auction? They didn’t throw them away or something after the photoshoot, did they? Maybe Peter Blake kept them? Does anybody know?

That gnome is so hidden I didn’t even notice him until I really looked. LOL!! But it does have all four signatures so yes, it’s extremely valuable.

I don’t know how/if we could pull this off, but wouldn’t it be cool if we could recreate the cover using photos of forum members? Joe and The Mods (I still say this is a great name for a band!) could be in the foreground around the bass drum with rows of Forumpudlians behind us. What a great way to commemorate the album’s 50th anniversary next year!

I wish we could gather for the Joe and The Mod photo shoot at Joe’s place in October. We could have our own Mad Day Out while we’re at it.

You just reminded me I read this little snippet recently about George having the cutout of Sri Mahavatar Babaji http://kenwoodlennon.blogspot……-1969.html

“The figurine circled on your website photos is of a British Girl scout and was owned by Peter Blake and me [Jann Haworth] just thought you might like to know. Also I still have the Old Lady on who’s lap the Shirley Temple doll is sitting….it was a figure made in 1962 when I was a student at the Slade School of Fine Art. More trivia for you. JH” I will post an article about Jann and her work soon.

I wouldn’t just draw some random people; I’d draw them as I imagine them in Mad-Day-Out-esque positions, subtly influenced by their fab avatars of course.
I have drawn Forumpudlians before and that’s how I did it.
