Okay, this may be controversial, but I think Pepper actually is underrated. Not by the music press, but by the fans. Best album of all time it ain't, but this is not the “mostly bad with ADITL and Lucy” album people make it out to be. Not their best, but I love it.

Offline It's more of a case of songs being overrated than the album as a whole. Some of the songs aren't that great, let's just be honest about it, but the album as a whole is remarkable and A Day In The Life certainly makes the rest of the album seem better. I'm a fan of every song, but if they could have thrown in a John or George song instead of Getting Better or Fixing A Hole , I think the album would be a bit better.
Other than that, I think the She's Leaving Home/Mr. Kite/Within You…/When I'm 64 is one of the most magical runs in the history of music.

Offline It was the first Beatles album I ever got, and I got it a few years before getting any more, so it reminds me of my childhood etc. I think because of that it will always be my favourite. And A Day In The Life is probably my joint favourite Beatles song with Happiness Is A Warm Gun .
Although I get what GniknuS is saying, there are a lot of Paul tracks. But I love them all, and as an album, I just can't fault it.

I don’t think there are many Pepper haters, but there are lots of people (myself included) who think it is overrated. The songs are largely mediocre at best. I don’t mind the first five or the last two or three, but the run in between is a sliding scale from the high end of mediocrity to the low end. “She’s Leaving Home ” sounds sad, but is let down by the plodding verses. “Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite !” sounds like nobody really tried. “Within You Without You ” sounds like George wrote down a series of things that sounded “deep” and tried to put them together in a song. “When I’m Sixty-Four ” has some appeal, but Paul’s voice sounds bad and it is essentially granny s**t. The less said about Lovely Rita , the better.
I prefer Rubber Soul ‘s individual song quality, Revolver ‘s coherence (and song quality), the White Album ‘s vocals and instrumental parts, and Abbey Road ‘s medley. When it’s your fifth favourite Beatles album but people vote it the best album in the history of time, you’re going to think it is overrated. I’m not even sure it’s massively better than Let It Be … Naked.
Now, if they'd waited until Christmas and included “Strawberry Fields Forever “, “Penny Lane “, “The Fool On The Hill “, “All You Need Is Love ” and “I Am The Walrus ” (and maybe “Across The Universe “, if they'd recorded it the day after John wrote it), that would be an album worthy of winning those awards.

Offline I think the album is fantastic, but you need to play it all, not just shuffle. I really like it and some of their songs are among my favorite. But is it their best album? I don't think so. Their most iconic among non-Beatle fans? Definetly.

Offline I'd probably have to agree with The Walrus in that the standard of the songs is higher on Revolver , The White Album and Abbey Road ; Rubber Soul at a push. And the album is overrated by non-Beatles fans. But purely for nostalgia it's Sgt Peppers all the way for me.

One of my favourite bands has released Pepper… 
It's hard to say, because I want different things from the different bands I like. But I'll give it a shot.
Of my 15 most-listened to bands according to last.fm (which isn't entirely accurate as it has a few thousand scrobbles from two-three years ago and very few from the past 18 months, but is close enough), Pepper would definitely not be my favourite if released by The Beatles, Queen, Manic Street Preachers, Cornershop, Arcade Fire, George Harrison , David Bowie, or Frank Turner. In the cases of Green Day, Them Crooked Vultures and The Decemberists, it is hard for me to say because of my expectations of the band. I reckon the answer would be “no” for Green Day and yes for the other two. That leaves Stereophonics, The View and Kaiser Chiefs, all of whom I think it is a definite “yes”. It would be a close call with Stereophonics' Word Gets Around if Pepper didn't have ADitL, but it does, so that's a moot point.
Other honourable mentions: R.E.M. yes (though again, expectations), The Rolling Stones yes, The Kinks probably (again, ADitL seals it), The Clash oo er tough one I think I'll pass, Pink Floyd no.

Offline I think it’s so critically acclaimed because there is nothing else like it. Think about every song and how different and unique each one is. But still, Revolver is every bit as unique plus the song quality is much higher, so I have no idea why Pepper is looked at as the obvious Beatles album that everyone knows. Maybe it’s the name.

Offline Or maybe the moment of the turning point from Beatles moptops and Beatles mofos. After Pepper nobody would consider them the cute Liverpool guys but the monsters that transformed the music.
That's the thing I guess.. as a whole, the impact is amazing. Remember, at this moment, there was no White Album , no MMT, no Abbey Road ….

Offline I don't know if I would call it underrated by fans. The album is very good as a whole as is the White Album , but we know there are some real less-than stellar songs on both albums. I guess fans knows that other albums hold a stronger set of songs like on Revolver . Revolver has better songs than Sgt. Pepper 's. But it was like you all said Lucy and ADitL that captured the album and an entire generation. It's songs like 64 and Getting Better that throws the album off on an individual song basis. I prefer it over MMT though.
Geniuses I say for coming up with such a definitive album when rock 'n' roll was still in its childhood years.

Offline I echo the sentiments of most in this thread. With a few notable exceptions, the songs are mediocre (with Beatles standards being the baseline). I've even written in this forum that there are times I feel Pepper was overproduced. But as a whole, for me anyway, the entire album has an incredibly cool feel to it.
When I am in the mood for Beatles (yeah, I know) it's not the first album I spin the iPod dial to. But, when I'm in the mood for total relaxation at the end of the day; when I want to totally let my mind relax and float downstream, this is always the one I choose.
At the precise moment that the pianos are struck for that final chord, both of my arms are thrust in the air in a “V”. Then, the arms are slowly lowered and a Cheshire grin appears on my kisser in anticipation of the run-out groove.
**Slight derail– Before clicking on “Post New Reply” below, I took a look at my “Top 25 Most Played” list. I've told you guys in the past that All Thing Must Pass is my favorite way to start a day. Now, I've said that SPLHB is my favorite way to end it.

Offline Sgt Pepper is my Favorite album but I can understand why you don't think its All that. Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band the song isn't amazing (lyrically) and Neither is reprise. So I can understand. But It's still amazing to me!!!

Offline Sgt Pepper is a fabulous album and it’s easy to see why it was so revolutionary when it was released — and why it is still so highly regarded now. It sounds so different from anything else — including anything else The Beatles ever released. Nevertheless, I also agree that it’s not the best thing in the group’s catalogue. I don’t think it’s as good as REVOLVER, Abbey Road or the White Album … in fact, I like the Magical Mystery Tour album (the one compiled by Capitol records and then adopted by EMI in England) better too. But PEPPER is still a very good album, and features Ringo’s best ever vocal performance (“With A Little Help From My Friends “) and many other first-rate songs, such as “Mr Kite”, “Lucy”, and “Within You Without You “. “She’s Leaving Home ” is a shameless tearjerker, no doubt, but a very nice performance (especially John’s vocal part). And of course, “A Day In The Life ” is in a class by itself, perhaps The Beatles’ finest achievement — I can just imagine what it must have been like to hear this album for the first time way back in 1967…. that “shivers down the spine” Lennon vocal (as George Martin so aptly put it) and the incredible orchestral double climax….. I can imagine all those folks struck numb by the final piano chord. That must have been an amazing experience. For me, the downside of PEPPER is still “When I’m 64” — I still cringe at that song (especially now that I’m not all that far away from that dreaded age myself!) — how could a self-respecting rock band ever release something like that? haha
