Any thoughts on this?Long Tall Sally was an ep and it was compiled on Vol.1.Both Magical Mystery Tour and Yellow Submarine was originally released as EPs(I know they scrapped the idea),but they were subsequently released as albums.Because of this there is a gap between Revolver non-album singles and White Album era songs.Should the label have gone this route back then, like Mono Masters putting the 4 YS songs on that compilation but also include MMT as well since none of those are “real albums”
1. Day Tripper
4. Rain
6. Penny Lane
10. I Am The Walrus
14. Flying
15. Blue Jay Way
1. Lady Madonna
3. Hey Jude
4. Revolution
7. Hey Bulldog
9. Get Back
10. Don’t Let me Down
11. The Ballad Of John And Yoko
12. Old Brown Shoe
14. Let it Be
15. You Know my Name
It would have made some logical sense, since MMT was a UK EP but is now the only Capitol album to become part of the canon. However, if there was no MMT album reissue there’d be no artwork, including the booklet and lyric sheet. That, I think, is important.
If they put out 3x Past Masters and the MMT album people would rightly accuse Apple of being greedy and exploiting the fans. I think they made the right decision.

I agree with Joe. Furthermore for once, I agree with Capitol records for making it an LP over the original EP, (and making it virtually the same, not butchering it) and obviously the Beatles agreed with it too, or Apple wouldn’t have released the new re-issues with it if they were against it.
As for scrapping Yellow Submarine , you just can’t undo an LP that was done!!!!

Maybe when Apple re-released these (stereo/mono) LP boxes, they should have also released the 45’s & EP’s too. Then there would be no need for Past Masters !

I think they should’ve had an LP/CD containing the Magical Mystery Tour EP on side A followed by the 5 Beatles tracks on Yellow Submarine yet to be released on a UK album on side B.
Then for Past Masters , we move We Can Work It Out , Day Tripper , Paperback Writer , and Rain to disc 1 and add Strawberry Fields Forever , Penny Lane , Baby, You’re A Rich Man, and Hello, Goodbye to disc 2.
As for the artwork, one side of the cover would have the MMT cover and the other side having the Yellow Submarine cover, with the book in the gatefold.
The Past Masters LP would have to be arranged like so since the sides wouldn’t match up otherwise. Instead of leaving side F blank, i included 5 bonus tracks from Anthology:
Side A: (mono)
Side B: (mono)
Side C: (mono)
Baby, You’re A Rich Man
Side D: (stereo)
You Know My Name (Look Up The Number) (mono)
Side E: (mono)
I Want To Hold Your Hand (German)
She Loves You (German)
Across The Universe (stereo)
Get Back (stereo)
Let It Be (stereo)
Side F: (mono)
One After 909 (1963 version)

I wonder how you feel in 2018, now knowing all the Capitol albums, even including The Beatles Story, have been reissued, meaning there is no doubt the Capitol MMT would have been reissued with its glorious artwork intact, would Past Masters be better served and make more sense by not having a big 1967-shaped hole in it?

That’s the one thing that used to bother me about PM2: the lack of 1967 representation. But at the time, I wasn’t aware that “You Know My Name” largely dated from that year…
“Xmas Time…”, the full version, would appear to be the only other uncollected ’67 recording that may have warranted inclusion in that comp, although I really don’t miss it (it’s not great 🙁 ).

@Ron Nasty The Capitol albums were reissued in 2014 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of The Beatles coming to the US, a full year before Joe made that comment in 2015.
But since we’re on the topic, if it were up to you, would you put the EP tracks on Past Masters or on it’s own disc.

Good point, @Dark Overlord, but still a valid question I think as Joe’s answer doesn’t address the fact MMT would have come out via the Capitol reissues if it hadn’t already.
As to the question of how I would have done Past Masters , this is how I have it on my laptop:
Volume One:
Love Me Do [Ringo version]
I Saw Her Standing There [Free As A Bird single]
From Me To You
Thank You Girl
Devil In Her Heart [Baby It’s You BBC single]
She Loves You
I’ll Get You
This Boy [Free As A Bird single]
I Want To Hold Your Hand
This Boy
Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand
Sie Liebt Dich
Long Tall Sally
I Call Your Name
Slow Down
Matchbox
I Feel Fine
She’s A Woman
Bad Boy
Yes It Is
I’m Down
Day Tripper
We Can Work It Out
Here, There And Everywhere [Real Love single]
Yellow Submarine [Real Love single]
Paperback Writer
Rain
time – 69:13
Volume Two:
Penny Lane
Strawberry Fields Forever
All You Need Is Love
Baby You’re A Rich Man
Hello Goodbye
I Am The Walrus
Magical Mystery Tour
The Fool On The Hill
Flying
Blue Jay Way
Your Mother Should Know
Christmas Time Is Here Again [Free As A Bird single]
Lady Madonna
The Inner Light
Hey Jude
Revolution
Get Back
Don’t Let Me Down
The Ballad Of John And Yoko
Old Brown Shoe
Across The Universe
Let It Be
You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)
time – 78:59

@Von Bontee, on PPM I Saw Her Standing Her is the count-in from take 9 edited onto take 1, the FaaB single included the full take 9:
The Baby It’s You single to promote Live At The BBC featured three songs not included on it. The versions of I’ll Follow The Sun and Boys were included on On Air, but that album used a version of Devil In Her Heart that was recorded for Pop Go The Beatles on 3 September 1963 while the single had used a version recorded for the same show on 16 July:
This Boy on the FaaB single are studio outtakes, takes 12 & 13:
While Here, There And Everywhere on Real Love is an combination of take 7 (mono mix of basic track and guide vocal) with harmonies overdubbed onto take 13:
EDIT: I love how no-one’s mentioned the stupid sod’s called the first track referenced I Saw Her Standing Her… erm…

It’s interesting how you opted for the US tracklisting for Magical Mystery Tour instead of the UK order, especially considering how strongly you feel that Capitol’s version isn’t a proper album.
I also noticed that All You Need Is Love is included but not the other 4 Beatles songs on Yellow Submarine that aren’t on a UK album, was that intentional?
As for the BBC and Anthology B-sides, i personally wouldn’t include them, mainly because they’re either alternate takes or live versions but it got me thinking about whether or not Free As A Bird and Real Love should be on Past Masters or not.
By the way, which ones are in mono and which ones are in stereo.

Wait … what? How could you possibly say that Magical Mystery Tour isn’t a “real album”? It’s got some lovely songs on it. And about Yellow Submarine , even though it’s got few tracks, it has the instrumental soundtrack from the film.
Reporter: Beethoven figures in one of your songs. What do you think of Beethoven?
Ringo Starr: He’s great. Especially his poetry.

@silverhammerYT , I believe it is a technical distinction and not one of opinion. For instance, MMT isn’t technically an album. I don’t know what they released it as in the US, but in the U.K. it was released as a double EP, not a studio album. Don’t worry, it’s got nothing to do with the songs. I agree, MMT and YS are both lovely (though I think YS would be better with other songs from the film instead of the orchestral soundtracks, but that’s just me.) @Ron Nasty can correct me if I’m wrong.
Love one another.

In America Magical Mystery Tour was released as an album. Side A included the songs from the EP and Side B included singles from 1967 so that is why Strawberry Fields Forever , Penny Lane , All You Need Is Love , Hello Goodbye and Baby, You’re a Rich Man are included.

I see. It’s considered an album by most of the US. If you Google search Magical Mystery Tour , it shows results as “Album by The Beatles”.

Well in America it was released as an album. I consider Magical Mystery Tour an EP but I believe the American version was released when The Beatles catalogue was released on CD so all of the songs on Side B could be released.

I wouldn’t consider it a soundtrack album since 4 of the songs weren’t in the film and the film wasn’t even released in the US until 1974, 7 years after the LP.
I’d call it a studio album although i think it’s technically a compilation album.
