My standard line for the Brian Wilson argument (which is a valid point BTW) is that had Brian heard the original version he would have went nuts right away then rather than doing so trying to create Smile. …..
There are 9 different permutations of Rubber Soul released on Digital Audio. 10 if you include the Original Canadian CD. 11 if @Bongo wants to include the 24 bit version from the Beatles Apple.
I’m in 100% on the original. I love the American version too. It wasn’t the true folk rock album it’s purported to be. It could have been if Dexter chose his songs with more care and knowledge but it’s a delight to listen to.

Has anyone tried to make a hybrid version of both albums.
Isn’t that what Capitol Records do???
A hybrid of a hybrid. Hybridception

I have the UK version in mono (2014 reissue), was thinking today it would be nice to also have the American onethere’s overlap, sure, but I also have two Stones comps that share like 5 songs
Why not!
I have the UK & Canadian versions of all their work!

is there much difference between US and Canadian ones? I’m Canadian myself, so I’m sure I could find those ones easily enough if I wanted
I just say American/US to mean North American in general

@WeepingAtlasCedars cheers! I guess I coulda looked it up myself on Wikipedia hahaha but hey
Beatlemania!, Twist And Shout , and Long Tall Sally all seem worth picking up as far as Canadian ones go (I’d like to get the UK/canon A Hard Day’s Night , and I have everything after that already)

Yes all 3 original Canadian mono records do sound fantastic. But they are direct transfers of the UK records, unlike the US counterparts that have been Dexterized.
But after those 3 LPs, Canada Capitol were ordered by their US bosses to follow suit. A Hard Day’s Night and on, are all the same as the US albums.

I was able to buy a sealed 1968 USA copy some time ago… it is the DEFINITIVE version of Rubber Soul for me, as the UK version is inferior (DUCKS)

Since the US version of Help ! was a soundtrack album, we only had 7 new songs (plus Yesterday /Act Naturally ) to groove to between Aug. 3rd and Dec. 3rd, 1965. That’s four long months of no new music, especially considering 6 albums had been released during the prior year. So when I put the needle down for the first time on my brand new Rubber Soul album and heard the intro into I’ve Just Seen A Face , the experience was fantastically!spiritually!emotionally! burned into my musical memory. The song made such an impression that later when I heard John say “And now we’d like to do Hark The Angels Come”, it’s this moment that I thought of. For us in the US, Side 2 of Help ! sounds like an oddly organized compilation album.
No disrespect to the band/producers artistic visions intended. Actually with the exception of the Capitol versions of Meet The Beatles & Rubber Soul , I always listen to the Parlophone originals. Perhaps if I had heard the original Rubber Soul that first listen, I’d feel the same way about “Beep beep mm beep beep yeah”.

I was thinking about how Brian Wilson heard the US version of Rubber Soul , and was inspired to create albums as a cohesive piece of art as opposed to a package of tunes meant to be marketed and sold around a few big singles. The Beach Boys up to that point had released their albums in the same way, selling a package of summer hits. Many Brian’s most beautiful compositions are sprinkled throughout the early albums, but the overall composition of the albums is centered around meeting the demanding capitol release schedule and selling a package of summer hits. I find it funny that Brian’s inspiration to create an album filled entirely with ‘beautiful compositions’ came from a an albut that had been changed from the Artist’s original vision.
