Michelle and What Goes On is the weakest part of the album for me – but still love ‘em.

I think Michelle is brilliant. Lyrics are cheesy without a doubt, but the progression and melody are gorgeous. Particularly the ascending diminished triad on “go together well.” Those high notes on “I Love You” also rule. A great example of how prolific of a songwriter Paul is, even though I think John takes the cake for his output on Rubber Soul .

"We could ride and surf together while our love would grow"

It’s more that I prefer the energy of the other songs and that segment feels like a lull of sorts. But they fit in with the rest of the album. What I love most about Rubber Soul is how full of life it is.

Absolutely amazing album, in my top 5 favourites. Every song is so great but my favourites are definitley In My Life , Nowhere Man , Norwegian Wood , Michelle , Girl and Think For Yourself . Some really mature and heartfelt tracks on here

Haha I got recommended that a few days ago. Listening to it now, it’s great
Some, like You Won’t See Me (which has a very prominent rhythm section) or In My Life (which I’ve played), I could recognize right off, but Nowhere Man was mind-blowing! Never really paid attention to the bass on that one (the vocals are too diatractingly amazing), but it’s like a whole nuther song.

I thought you might be exaggerating about it sounding like a wholly different song — but I just listened to the isolated bass and you’re right! Someone should construct a new song from that bassline!

Exaggerating? Me?! I’ve outgrown the pimply teenage hyperbole, thank you very much!
The idea of building a whole new song on top of an existing Beatles bassline is a thrilling one.

Despite the connective parts of Pepper and Abbey Road , I think Rubber Soul is their most cohesive album. The sessions really have a unique approach from the rest of their albums where they are beginning to leap forward creatively, without going off in every possible direction like Pepper and the White Album . It is a very grounded and songwriting focused album. There are driven guitars and a sitar, but there is also the deep sigh on Girl or the sped up piano solo on In My Life . Yet none of these elements feel out of place within the context of the song or album that they appear on. The sound of Rubber Soul could have defined the Beatles over the rest of their albums and I would never get tired of it. It is such comfortable place to be, yet they moved on very quickly into their psychedelic era when it would have been easy to get complacent after honing in such a great sound. At least they stayed with it for a full album.

It’s so trademark Beatles to me, retaining the energy and fun of their earlier work while evolving into something even better (IMO). I could have easily accepted more albums in the vein but I’m obviously grateful the lads moved on quickly to give us that incredible variety.
