Random shocking fact: the first time I heard In My Life I wasn’t very impressed – now this has changed, of course (what was I thinking?) a-hard-days-night-john-6

I didn’t either when I first heard it, but eventually my musical tastes became better and I started to like the song, and now it’s one of my favorites on the album.

I'm coming down fast from miles above you.

As usual, for me the Beatles put together so many stellar songs, each one excellent in its own unique ways, that to choose one as the best would be like someone asking me to choose which of my children to exempt from being sacrificed by being thrown into a flaming volcano.  I can grudgingly make lists of better and less better songs; but not pick out one “best”.

My favourites are “Girl” and “In my life”. Depends on the moment. After that they would come “Run For Your Life “, “Wait “, “I´m looking through you” and “You won´t see me”. Maybe “Norwegian good” too. I know it is not a popular opinion, but I like “Wait ” and “Run For Your Life ” is an awesome song in my opinion. Awesome vocals and guitar, and the lyrics show the real John. Maybe John´s best album, along with The White Album . Not a big fan of George´s songs on this one (I prefer “I need you” or “Taxman “) but he was becoming a better guitar player. Paul songs were getting better, but I still prefer John´s.

This album is the end of an era. Awesome album, but they were keeping their best for the next years.

Drive My Car , definitely. It’s poppy and catchy, but it’s also soulful and sophisticated. But with Rubber Soul , it’s no exaggeration to say that every song is great.

Again, too many to choose from, but the 3 I ALWAYS have time for are Norwegian Wood , In My Life , and I’m Looking Through You . Not quite as flawless as Revolver , but damn close.

Like a few other folks in this thread – for me it is ‘Nowhere Man ‘.  By a country mile.  Currently my favourite Beatles song, and it has been for some time – I just love the music and the general feel of the lyrics.

My favorite is actually “The Word “, I consider it like a Beatles-themesong, it also has impeccable groove-thx Paul. It’s right smack-dab in the middle of their career, so the I think concept of “love” was starting to change for them. It’s a love song but its not about a relationship necessarily.

I’m all about “You Won’t See Me ” as well.

a-hard-days-night-john-6– it’s in my top 10.

Side note: I’ve posted before that the clean piano notes at the begining of ‘The Word ‘ contrast wonderfully with the fuzzy bass notes at the end of ‘Think For Yourself ‘. Now, when listening to the album on my iPod or CD player I hit the “next” button the instant ‘Think For Yourself ‘ ends, eliminating any silence between songs. I just love it.

Try it, you’ll like it!george-martin

The August 2013 issue of the UK magazine Q features an article about Beatles’ biographer Hunter Davies. Illustrating the article is a sheet of paper with John Lennon ‘s handwritten lyrics for “In My Life ,” including verses that he later discarded. John’s original idea for “In My Life ” looked a lot like what Paul’s “Penny Lane ” turned out to be; a nostalgic travelogue, referencing many sights from Woolton to Liverpool. Here is one of John’s unused verses:

(sung to the tune of “There are places I’ll remember”…)

Penny Lane is one I’m missing, up church and to the clock tower, In the circle of the abbey, I have seen some happy hours“…

The early, prototype lyrics don’t scan with the melody very well, but then again the melody probably wasn’t fully formed at that point, either. I’m glad he decided to scrap the phrase “happy hours,” which makes me think of late-afternoon reduced-price drink and snack specials in pubs. Unless that’s exactly what John was remembering. :D

These lyrics and drawings and postcards from Hunter Davies’ collection are now on display at the British library. I’d go to see them if I lived there.

Q Magazine doesn’t say where the British Library is located, but I’m guessing it would be in London. Beatle Biblers from the UK will be able to see John’s handwritten lyrics to “In My Life ,” along with all the rest of Davies’ collection” in the Treasures Gallery, alongside the Magna Carta and works by Shakespeare.

Here’s another discarded verse from “In My Life :” (sing to the tune of “There are places I’ll remember”… )

“Past the tram sheds with no trams, on the bus into town, past the (can’t decipher) and St. Columbus, to the (can’t decipher) umbrella that they pulled down”…

It’s fascinating to get a peak at the early development of this song. :)
