I’ve taken more of an interest in “The Word ” since realizing that it’s Lennon’s first preachy song (“Too Many People preaching practices” … ?) and also the precursor to “All You Need Is Love “
I also like the bouncy opening.
I’d rank it above “What Goes On ?”

According to McC. in “Many Years From Now,” it was he (McC) who wrote the melody.
If that’s true, then this is indeed one of the best Lennon-McCartney songs.

I’ve always been kind of skeptical about that. I can imagine the melody being more McCartneyish, but I think more people would have said if they knew he’d written the ENTIRE musical content.

But Paul has come out and said he wrote the entire melody on the piano in John’s house, using John’s lyrics as a framework, taking inspiration from Motown songs and Smokey Robinson apparently. Seems quite a large dispute to make, I would imagine someone would remember who authored such key bits in the song. Maybe Paul’s thinking of another song or mistaken entirely.

Offline Still a huge fan of “Think For Yourself ” and “The Word ” (my favoite song on the album) as an awesome combo. If the silence between the 2 songs is removed, the sound is sublime. From fuzzy bass to crisp clean piano…I get goose bumps just thinking about it.

Not sure it’s the lyrics that are disputed. McCartney himself doesn’t lay claim to them (does he?) – just the melody.

Offline Yeah, as far as I know, the lyrics aren’t disputed. They are based on a poem written by John. In contrary, the melody is highly disputed. Paul said that it’s entirely his, while John stated that Paul just helped him with the middle eight – as Into the Sky with Diamonds said just before.

Offline I love Rubber Soul , almost as much as Revolver . I think it was George who said that the two of them could have been the same album, in two parts. Cracking songs on Rubber Soul though.
Too hard to pick a favourite but my top three would be “In my life”, “Nowhere Man ” and “Norweigan wood”.
Not a bad song on the album, awesome stuff.

My guess is that John thinks of the span from “All these places have their moments” through the “In my life, I’ve loved them all” as the middle eight.

Offline Rubber Soul is without a doubt one of my favourite albums ever. It’s the perfect album to me because I love every. single. song. Not unlike Revolver .
But my favourite track would have to be Norwegian Wood . I’m a sucker for a good story being told, and I just imagine John setting some girl’s house on fire. The instrumentation is really interesting and different, and there’s something about the way John enunciates the words… It’s a song I can listen to over and over and over and never get sick of it.
I also love I’m Looking Through You – shamelessly catchy melody and great to sing along to. The lyrics are so easy to relate to. And it’s also really fun to play on guitar. I like how the chords change so quickly, and the keyboard in it is just too funky. Yes, I just said funky.

DUDE. I completely agree with you on everything, 100%. Even though Norweigian Wood is a bit farther down on my list, that is one of the few songs I’ll never get tired of. And oh yes, watching the wonderful Lennon light things on fire would be a sight.
… And I did happen to use the term “funky” on my list as well. So that’s groovy. :p
