If listening to this doesn't make you love Michelle , you don't have a soul. Live in Montreal (yes, I was there.)

I think the Rubber Soul version would have a better chance of making someone love that song

After I took it, it opened my eyes. We only use one-tenth of our brain. Just think what we could all accomplish if we could only tap that hidden part. It would mean a whole new world. If the politicians would take LSD, there wouldn't be any more War or poverty or famine.

Rubber Soul is such a fabulous album that it's always hard for me to say definitively which song is my favourite.   But it's definitely one of John Lennon 's compositions — it's possible Rubber Soul was John's high-water mark as a singer and composer — he is just fabulous on this album.   Paul and George also have some good moments here, but John's contributions are what make this a classic, in my opinion, and I'm never sure whether “Norwegian Wood ” or “In My Life ” are the best.   Also this is one case where I actually prefer the Capitol release in the US to the Parlophone release in the UK.  I think the running order and the different lineup work better on Capitol, with “I've Just Seen A Face” making a better lead-in for “Norwegian Wood ” than “Drive Me Car” does (although the US album, as always, had fewer songs)…. anyway, if I had to rank the Parlophone version… it would probably go like this:

1a.   Norwegian Wood — haunting even without the sitar, but George's chiming notes make it ethereal and exotic — and John's voice was never better

1b.   In My Life — what can you say?  Lennon at his best — dreamy, thoughtful, with a beautiful melody (that Paul says he wrote)

 3.    If I Needed Someone — George finally arrives as a composer with a first-rate song and a perfect performance (including terrific guitar).

4.    Nowhere Man — beautiful song with a beautiful message — and more great Lennon singing — and the double-lead solo from George and John cap it all off, with George's harmonic ping at the end the perfect punctuation mark

5.    Girl  —  Another Lennon classic, although a bit disturbing and mournful, but a lyric most men can probably identify with (I certainly knew the girl in this story) and some great guitar work — especially the bouzouki flourish at the end

6.    I'm Looking Through You — Paul's best song here, with more bite than you normally hear in a McCartney song.

7.    You Won't See Me — another great Paul song, and a song I've always enjoyed singing along with (but then that would describe nearly ALL Beatles songs, wouldn't it?)

8.    Drive My Car — a very enjoyable track, with a great note-bending guitar solo from Paul

9.    Wait — a pretty good job, especially George's tone-pedal guitar work

10.    The Word —  also a pretty good job and good harmony work (as always) from John and Paul

11.    Think For Yourself — lyrically not the greatest George song, but the fuzz bass makes it sound pretty good

12.    Michelle — I know this is considered a Beatles classic and many people love it but I've never been all that fond of it, to be honest, and I'm not sure why — maybe a bit too sugary for me

13.    Run For Your Life — some great guitar work from George but an appalling lyric — it takes the jealous sentiments of “You Can't Do That” to homicidal extremes — no wonder John expressed complete distaste for it in later years

14.    What Goes On — probably the weakest Ringo song in the Beatles library (although it would have ranked 2nd on that list if they'd released “If You Got Trouble”, which eventually showed up on ANTHOLOGY)

I've got nothing to say, but it's okay..

GOOD MORNING!

GOOD MORNING!!

It’s no secret by now that I love every song on this album. But if someone held a ray gun to my head, I’d pick The Word .

a-hard-days-night-john-3I had to check my answer to this question from from 6 months ago, hoping I said “The Word “.

What if someone was torturing you with The Stones’ Start Me Up while you get ready for football? Then would the answer differ?

All the songs on Rubber Soul are unbelievably awesome. Norweigan Wood is probably my favorite though.

The following people thank seaglass eyes sunny smile for this post:

"What happens to them?" insisted Milo.

a-hard-days-night-ringo-8 I agree with you, sea glass. Though I will probably disagree with myself in a few minutes.

1. Norwegian Wood – I just love the story telling. I was kind of amazed that this song was supposed to be “humoristic”. It sounds kind of sarcastic and sad to me. I also thought that John (or whoever) just lit the fire place, not all the furniture. Ohh well. I also love George's sitar ( he had just started playing it?? Doesn't sound like that). And of course, John's vocals…

2. Girl-I especially like singing this one. Those sharp intakes of air and desperate voice, John sounds so sexy ( I don't, though). Lyrics are probably not “that” extraordinary, except the last verse. Apparently John and Paul had some disagreement who wrote that part, personally I don't think it sounds like Paul at all. “Was she was told when she was young that pain would lead to pleasure, did she understand it when they said, that a man must break his back to earn his day of pleasure, would she still believe it when he's dead…” I think it's just brilliant. Whether it's about the society or church

3.In my life-I agree with most people, the melody is beautiful. Although “Can't buy me love” does have its short-comes, it offered me some great information about this song. I always thought it was harpsichord (it sounds so stupid in English, cembalo is much prettier) in the solo, but it's actually George Martin playing ordinary piano whose sound is later altered because he couldn't play the part in the right speed a-hard-days-night-ringo-7 or something. Whatever it is, I like it. Probably my favorite part of the song.  I love the first verse of the song as well. After that I think… John becomes somewhat, what's the word, I don't know, starts to sound like Paul… I like that as well, but I also find it weird to fit that part “but of all there friends and lovers, there is no one compares with you” to Cynthia. Perhaps I'm mistaken as to how much John loved her then (either that, or he wasn't completely honest with this part. Any way, I think Cynthia must have loved this song)

4. Michelle -Mmm. The mood of the song is fantastic. Paul sounds so wistful, one of his best vocal performances I think ( I also like that live performance. It's somewhat harsher than the recorded one, but so real). The french part is just kind of stupid. Couldn't he think of anything else to say than to repeat the same thing? This seems to a “problem” for Paul in general. Like so many pop writers, he writes two verses and chorus, and then keeps repeating them. I don't if it's laziness or what; I find it almost impossible to write a melody like this one but I certainly could figure out some lyrics with more substance. Or perhaps I'm just being cocky. a-hard-days-night-ringo-12 And I suppose some people like simple lyrics

 5. Run four life-a-hard-days-night-ringo-4 I can see why John wouldn't like this one. But I'm fascinated by it, it's haunting “you better keep your head little girl or I won't know where I am”. It sounds to me like the singer doesn't really want to be so jealous, but he can't help it. I find myself in it. Perhaps I shouldn't listen to it, won't do me know good. And I totally disagree with the writer of “Can't buy me love” (sorry, I'm reading it so I cite it too much) that this song is harmless. At least it makes me shiver.

Pretty much the only song I don't like in Rubber Soul is “Nowhere Man “. Although the lyrics are ingenious, there's something really dull about the melody. Since I'm not a professional, I can't tell exactly what. Maybe it has something to do with it being “monotonous” or something like that. Harmonies are annoying as well

Totally agree about Nowhere Man . A very monotonous song that really doesnt do anything or go anywhere. Have never found or understoond out why it is so acclaimed by the critics and appears in top beatle songs polls, apart from the joint lead vocals but J, P & G which are better in Paperback Writer , Because , This Boy …

Certainly the weakest song on Rubber Soul.

To write something postive its not done too badly on tour, but that may be down to the beatles paying little attention to many of their concerts in 1966 so it works well in that specific context ie everything else isnt great so Nowhere Man fits in better. Plus Ringo does do a great cymbal crash leading into the solo.

I personally love the moody, drawling lilt that “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)” has. It’s a very strong tune in John’s never-ending list of classics. I'’d like to make a note that “Run For Your Life ,” a regularly maligned song in the Beatles’ catalog, is one of my favorites. It’s goofy, boppy, mocking fun, and it has some killer slide guitar. Just a thought. Happy listening! apple01
