What Goes On has overdubs, I always thought it was just:
Ringo Starr : Lead Vocals, Drums
John Lennon : Rhythm Guitar, Backing Vocals
Paul McCartney : Bass Guitar, Backing Vocals
George Harrison : Lead Guitar
Where’s the overdubs?

The vocals are the overdubs. As in many instances, this being an example, they would do an instrumental backing track and then overdub their vocals.
Had they decided WGO had required further overdubs, they would most likely have mixed it down into a Take 2, but they were happy with it as was.

George’s guitar part at the end is also overdubbed.
The basic rhythm track was recorded in just one take (presumable after some time rehearsing), this consisted of drums, bass, rhythm and lead guitar. The only overdubs required to complete the song were the vocals, Ringo on lead vocal and John and Paul offering assistance, and the lead guitar flourish at the end of the song, giving a little more life to the end of the song which was, as you will hear, a little flat…
Take 1
TK1: Drums, Bass
TK2: Rhythm Guitar

TK3: Vocals
TK4: Backing Vocals, Lead Guitar Ending

Does that mean that Boys is the only Beatles song that was recorded in one take and has no overdubs.

‘Long Tall Sally ‘ is one, ‘Rock And Roll Music ‘ potentially another tho it’s debated.

That means only 5 of their songs (Boys , Long Tall Sally , Rock And Roll Music , What Goes On , and Dear Prudence ) had their backing tracks recorded in one take and half of them still needed overdubs, maybe The Beatles weren’t as talented musicians as I thought they were if they need to record multiple takes for even the simplest of songs like Love Me Do and Yellow Submarine .

Sometimes the more talented musicians need more takes, because they’re perfectionists.

My favourite song on Rubber Soul would probably be The Word .
Only one song I dislike on this album: Michelle . All the others are simply sublime.

The only thing I don’t like about Michelle is that except for the first verse, Paul sings in French and it isn’t even anything romantic, it’s just these are words that go together well, mind as well say I wish you read me a bedtime story.

Just listen to any Beach Boys outtake. Arguably the best producer and songwriter in rock history is teamed up with the best session musicians around and it still takes over 20 tries to get down Help Me Rhonda.

Why does it matter how many takes it took?
How many takes did it take Queen, Pink Floyd, Elvis, Sinatra and all the others to record their songs?
Anyway, nobody on earth is sitting there listening to a great song thinking “This is such a good song but if not done in the first take ->“.

You’re kidding right? Nowhere Man is a brilliant song! The harmonies aren’t the best in their discography but that does by no means make it a bad song. The lyrics are a slightly more subtle version of Help ! and the guitar solo is gorgeous.Nope. No joke. The first time I heard it it bored me and has gone on boring me for almost 30 years. It does nothing for its entire duration, there are far superior guitar solos in the Beatles collection, the harmonies are better done elsewhere, and it goes on far too long.
Even if you don’t like it, you’re not seriously saying it’s worse than What Goes On ? WGO is a masterpiece of failure, from the shaky guitar performance to Ringo’s nails-on-a-chalkboard vocals to the uninspired harmonies to possibly the most boring melody and lyrics in their canon.
I love ‘What Goes On ‘. Ringo’s vocal is perfect for the song, the harmonies I find to be gorgeous, I love that kind of about-to-fall-apart rhythm track (which again is perfect for the song), and George’ chicken plucking guitar playing is fabulous. When I got the Rock Band files ‘WGO’ was the one I went to first and still hunt down. The lines
I used to think of no on else but you were just the same.
You didn’t even think of me as someone with a name.are amongst my favourite in all of the Beatles lyrics and it’s a brilliant twist on the meaning.
I adore Paul’s sad vocal during the third verse and George and John’s harmonies are fun to listen to on ‘You Won’t See Me ‘.
‘WGO’ has overdubs.
I don’t get what you mean when you say it ‘does nothing for its entire duration’. What are you expecting it to do? A back flip? Build up for six minutes and then launch into a crazy guitar solo? Go into an opera section? Okay, I’ll stop. But what are you expecting it to do? It has virtually the same structure as any other song from the period. The melody is interesting enough, not the greatest but John’s never were, Paul was always the strongest melodically. The guitar solo is no Comfortably Numb but it has a fairly unique strumming style and uses the lower strings of the guitar well.
I can maybe see an argument that it’s boring but so is any other track from that era with that logic. The only improvement I can think of to it’s composition would be a key change to the fourth (A major) similar to the one in Anna (Go To Him). I think that would have made it a more interesting listen at times but honestly I can’t see what’s not to like.

Beatlebug, lovelyritametermaidI've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

Some Beatles fans just don’t like certain Beatles songs that others would say are exceptional, meanmistermustard doesn’t like Nowhere Man , The Hole Got Fixed doesn’t like While My Guitar Gently Weeps . Hell, I don’t like Yesterday or A Hard Day’s Night .

Then there’s Revolution 9 (which i’m actually a fan of by the way).
My favourite song on Rubber Soul is In My Life followed by Norwegian Wood . I love Girl though so that’d probably be third (its ridiculously fun to play on guitar).
