Do we have a thread about Ringo’s singing ability? If not, we should create one to get this thread back on topic!

Does this really need a thread? Uh, a still surviving “I was there” fan must ‘tut tut’ those who whine about Ringo’s voice. He had millions of fans who lived for his sweaty bangs, his huge baby blues, his nose and his voice. Whether his country music twangers, kids songs, schmaltzy song, people absolutely loved the Ring. No time like the present to relegate the past to silly or useless or gone.
He’s sold many many albums solo, as well as a continual tour with his ever changing All Starr Band. The lad made me cry when he sang Photograph at George’s Memorial Concert. He was part of it all. And without what some may call needless songs, the magic would have had a mighty gap in it. That bit of silliness, that off note, that twinkle of magic about friends, or a sub or an octopus or a lullaby or a hick tune was a much needed facet of the beauty that this “good little rock and roll band” needed to rise above the rest.
I love you, Richie! As Mrs. Slocum would say, “And I am unanimous in that!”
OK, back to Rubber Soul which is already in progress….tit tit tit tit tit tit tit tit girl……..

I love how ‘Drive My Car ‘ sets the mood, but overall, ‘The Word ‘ is my favorite track on this album. It’s in my top 10.

I really like this album, I guess it’s just the folk sound that really drives me home. For me, I really like I’ve Just Seen A Face , Norwegian Wood , If I Needed Someone , and Girl. Although I really like Nowhere Man , I’m pretty sure it’s on Yesterday And Today and not Rubber Soul (at least the version I own), although to be fair, back in the 60’s I was a single getter/buyer and didn’t get most of their albums until after they split up. Also, SaxonMotherSon, I am a 1st genner as well and although I like Ringo’s voice sometimes, you have to admit that it sucked compared to John, Paul, and George’s great voices.

Yeah, Nowhere Man was on the US ‘Yesterday & Today’; it was also a US single.

The “folk album” was created by Capital, knocking off the rockers. Rubber Soul was my Xmas ’65 present! Funny, I have the *PP&M album ‘See What Tomorrow Brings’. On the liner notes, it reads “Dylan has gone rock n roll, the Beatles have gone folk, but PP&M are still the same”. (the next year, had them dipping into all kinds of late 60’s sounds as well, incl the song ‘I Dig Rock n Roll Music’, wherein they mention the Beatles & Donovan among others!) *Peter, Paul & Mary
Peace & Love!

It’s funny you say that because The Word is more of a rocker that stayed for the US release while Nowhere Man is more of a folker that was dropped for the US release.

I think Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown), Nowhere Man , If I Needed Someone , I’m Looking Through You , In My Life , You Won’t See Me , Girl and Michelle are all great tracks, just of great quality instrumental work, lyrics, timbre and prouction.
In My Life is my favorite since that’s my favorite song of all time. In terms of quality, NW and NM would be next but I don’t like them all that much as I’ve heard them so much.
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

I probably have but not for while so will again. The worst song on this by a fair distance is ‘Nowhere Man ‘. It is one heck of a boring song that goes nowhere for too long. There are far better Beatles songs with three part harmonies out there so that’s that most common argument for removed from the outset.

You’re kidding right? Nowhere Man is a brilliant song! The harmonies aren’t the best in their discography but that does by no means make it a bad song. The lyrics are a slightly more subtle version of Help ! and the guitar solo is gorgeous.
Even if you don’t like it, you’re not seriously saying it’s worse than What Goes On ? WGO is a masterpiece of failure, from the shaky guitar performance to Ringo’s nails-on-a-chalkboard vocals to the uninspired harmonies to possibly the most boring melody and lyrics in their canon.

My favorite song on this album is definitely Nowhere Man , one of the best Beatles songs of all time and you got to love the tone of the Strats in this song, although I wish they waited a little bit longer to start the solo.
My least favorite song on this album has to be You Won’t See Me , it’s not a bad track at all but it’s got nothing going for it. A close second would be What Goes On , but I sympathize for it because it was recorded in one take with no overdubs, so it’s expected that it’s going to be far from perfect, especially from the same guys who need more than one take to record Yellow Submarine .
If you're reading this, you are looking for something to do.

Nope. No joke. The first time I heard it it bored me and has gone on boring me for almost 30 years. It does nothing for its entire duration, there are far superior guitar solos in the Beatles collection, the harmonies are better done elsewhere, and it goes on far too long.

I love ‘What Goes On ‘. Ringo’s vocal is perfect for the song, the harmonies I find to be gorgeous, I love that kind of about-to-fall-apart rhythm track (which again is perfect for the song), and George’ chicken plucking guitar playing is fabulous. When I got the Rock Band files ‘WGO’ was the one I went to first and still hunt down. The lines
I used to think of no on else but you were just the same.
You didn’t even think of me as someone with a name.
are amongst my favourite in all of the Beatles lyrics and it’s a brilliant twist on the meaning.

I adore Paul’s sad vocal during the third verse and George and John’s harmonies are fun to listen to on ‘You Won’t See Me ‘.
‘WGO’ has overdubs.
