After 17 years, Rolling Stone magazine published a new list “500 greatest albums of all time”. Controversy is on the web!

Hip hop, Rap, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé appear at the top 100. The Beatles are among the greatest artists that fall and loose positions.

Sgt Pepers´s is no longer the # 1 album.  “What´s goin on” by Marvin Gaye is the new king.

Abbey Road is the only Beatles album at the top 10. (17 years ago The Beatles had 4 albums at the top 10!)

Here are the changes related to the top 5 Beatles albums.

Sgt Pepper ´S falls from # 1 to #24

REVOLVER from #3 to 11

Rubber Soul from # 5 to # 35

THE BEATLES from # 10 to 29

Abbey Road jumps from # 14 to # 5

The Beatles have 9 albums on the list. 5 at the top 50.

John Lennon have 11 albums as member of The Beatles and as solo (Plastic ono band and Imagine ). Paul, 10 (with Ram ), George 10 (with All Things Must Pass )

Led Zeppelin and Elvis off the top 50. U2 an Queen off the top 100. Rock is loosing positions. New sounds are climbing and climbing.

Decades  // number of albums

     ** 50:  9

     ** 60:  74

     ** 70:  157

     ** 80:  71

    ** 90:  103

  **2000:   50

  **2010:   36

What do you think about this new list?

I tend not to get too worked up about things like this; it’s all subjective. That The Beatles’ albums are no longer top-ten fixtures isn’t going to diminish my enjoyment of them.

It’s pretty obvious that RS are doing their best to court controversy with this list in order to attract attention. Putting

What’s Going On

#1 was an interesting decision, certainly. For my part, I think it’s a good thing that these lists aren’t continually filled up with the same series of canonised albums again and again. We’ve had fifty years of constant praise of The Beatles, Dylan etc; at least personally reading this list it was refreshing to see some different sounds making the high placings, and I can definitely get behind the inclusion of the likes of The Low End Theory, Back to Black, and Songs in the Key of Life in such high positions.

I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

I read the spoiler as ‘What Goes On ‘ and was trying to figure out why the Ringo song was #1.

This is the same as getting a number 1, it’s great if you do and gives a warm feeling in your nostrils on a cold day but it really means little. ‘Pepper’ is only the 24th greatest album ever… Damn. I’ll have to go and burn it.

The Rock and roll hall of fame 200 albums is another controversial list.
