I understand the decision to match the CD contents to the vinyl contents, even if the former can hold more content. The vinyl market has increased in the last five to ten years, so it makes sense for a record company to pay attention to it.I’m part of the CD generation, and will get that version instead, but I’d be annoyed if I wanted to buy the vinyl and it contained less content than the CD version.
Having the versions mirror each other moves the need to purchase both products.
It’s a slap in the face to those who buy CD. The CD format is designed to hold more content. We are paying more for less. And vinyl is inferior.

If you believe science, CD has been shown to be the same as what we hear when music is performed live. The warm sound of vinyl is a distortion that occurs when the needle hits the groove. Also, vinyl demonstrably degrades in quality with every play.

Where are you seeing the $30 digital download? That’s very easily worth the price, especially when you compare The Beach Boys charging over 70$ on some of their late 60s and 70s box sets for a digital download. Also i just edited out that last sentence, sorry if that’s poor forum etiquette but I agree its definitely something that’s better not to be publicly posted. It was meant to be a lighthearted quip in response to your “if someone gave it to me for free” comment.
The £30, no idea what it is in $s, is on iTunes.
It’s not about forum etiquette, simply looking out for others as god knows where Apple go wandering.

I wanna talk about the actual mixes sooooo bad.
Please don’t. Apple are said to be furious the files have been leaked and circulating, to draw attention to the mixes and what is where on here would be better not done. If anyone has benefitted from the files leaking please remember such things are illegal and should not be promoted or posted on the forum. Joe will not be involved in any of this and should not have to be linked to such happenings.

I have decided to treat this as a bootleg release where you get a fan mix lumped in with commonly available material to bulk up new outtakes. In this case therefore we get a fan mix direct from the master tapes (Giles remixes), the mixes we already had (mono mixes etc) and a two disc tape of ‘Revolver ‘ sessions which were selected for the ‘Anthology’ release before being whittled down and remixed/edited/supplanted for what we got there, which accounts for the duplicates of some material. The omission of ‘GDS’ is down to the bootleg compilers being idiots and not realising they accidently left it out when moving the files over to burn.
This means it is core for any and every collector/fan whilst the remixes are there for anyone who wants to enjoy them; it’s better to have the option than not at all. And I’ll stop moaning.

…I didnt mean I was going to anyway! I was just saying, it sucks to wait. didnt really need the reasoning. I already know all that. Take it easy.
Anyway, all the mixes seem to be on the official youtube now, so yay!
Eleanor’s god-awful panning in the verses has been fixed, thank god.

Those beach boys sets are a good example of what Apple could be doing here. All that space just sitting there and all that material in the vaults, it’s just a waste. 5 discs and 2hrs 40 of music.
The revolver 4 cd bootleg set covers most of the outtakes here, ok maybe not the exact take but you aren’t missing that much musically.Frustratingly the bootleggers also actually do a better job of showing how the songs developed in the studio.
The remix itself is fine. But sometimes the separating the guitars out works against the song a bit – especially on “she said” but i really liked what Giles did with that technology on “For No One “, it seems to have a bit more presence with the piano and harpsichord on different channels instead of the right.
The mono mix still sounds great, play that nice and loud !!

Wow, Ringo’s favourite-ever drum track seems about 25% more amazing now, hearing at proper speed! That’s one crazy-fast tempo! All those quick snare and hi-hat hits…wow. And Paul matching him, fast fingers and unending improvising around the drone…whatta rhythm section!
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

Folk with more understanding than myself have analysed the tracks and the bass is said to be an overdub recorded later with the tape sped up which shouldn’t be on the take 5 original speed outtake. Something to do with hums, cycles and such.
I’m pretty sure the first thing some people do isn’t listen to the tracks but get the computer programmes out and delve into the tracks to find out what is what and what isn’t right – which is fair enough as they are the ones who are finding out the intricate details on whether what we are listening to is what we should be hearing. I think there are a few other oddities, whether by accident, error or deliberation, which shouldn’t be in the set.

Got sidetracked with a race meeting, Derby Day in Melbourne and just checked my YouTube Music. There it is. I get 63 tracks, 2 hours and 42 minutes. Just listened to the first 4 tracks. Can you blow megahertz dust off a modem? Sounds the same. Mental. Can’t wait for the must have Beatles in rehearsal out takes! DOH!
Unless Paul McCartney knocks on my door I am unlikely to be impressed.

Haven’t heard everything but I find the studio chat at times more interesting than the music, especially when what we are hearing isn’t that new or revelatory; the discussion at the beginning of take 5 of ‘GTGYIML’ is a great example.
I can leave most of Giles mixes (as is usually the case) tho the one that really stands out as a real improvement is ‘EL’ as it now sounds wonderful. I’m convinced however that Giles has no idea how to mix George’s Indian tracks as both ‘WYWO’ and now ‘LYT’ are badly lacking in their feel. He also cannot fade out tracks fully as you can hear them cut off before they are gone.
There is a remixer called Lord Reith who has done incredible remixes of much of the Beatles catalogue (up to the ‘Hey Bulldog ‘) and I think I’ll stick to the majority of his.

Just listened to the Giles mix from go to oh. Yes, more separation. Expected. Cool but loses the DNA. Separating Beatles? Is that a good thing? They’ve been ‘Monkeefied’! Dr Robert vocals sound too sweet. Bass on Tomorrow Never Knows even more overbearing. Let’s just stop at the George Martin mixes. We know what happens when Paul gets too involved in final stamping… Let It Be … Naked. Mono and out…
Unless Paul McCartney knocks on my door I am unlikely to be impressed.

Well this satisfied my thirst for quite a few things. A good ER mix! GTGYIML with guitar! A good FNO mix! Overall, probably the happiest I’ve been with the new remixes, although the bar is fairly low from the last few albums. A fair few of these mixes are definitely better than the original mixes imo.
Got to say though… Totally ruined SSSS, the drums (the best bit) are non-existent, the guitars are unbalanced, etc. Taxman was never going to be easy with the way it was recorded. TMK is just… bland?

I thought ‘SSSS’ was a complete mess with the separated guitars and the cymbal crashes very meh. I also didn’t enjoy the separation of ‘FNO’.
I’m not too sure that all the separation is a good thing anyway as the Beatles were almost painting soundscapes and filling in gaps with the instruments to provide a lot of depth and textures, certainly as the albums went by; the remixes seem like you are going into the canvas and can see were all those gaps were in the first place and the enjoyment is lost. They really had to work things out due to all the reductions when recording.
Truth be told, I’m convinced that George Martin and co had the right idea at the time and what Giles is doing isn’t the answer. Some of the fan remixers seem to have a better feel and approach to their remixes where they are looking to give the tracks far better clarity and balance to the mixes yet stay faithful to what George M was doing. Giles’ are far more hit and miss. It’s good we have them tho as it’s better to have and ignore than not at all – and they also provide others the opportunity and means to create their own which can bring about fantastic results.
‘Rain ‘ at it’s natural speed is the ‘Penny Lane (take 6)’ WTF!!! moment. The early rough mix of ‘GTGYIMY’ with the guitars is a blast. But i have no idea why the rehearsal of ‘IOS’ is on here when it’s almost identical to what’s on ‘A2’ when there are another three version of the same song, especially when other tracks are badly represented and one missing entirely.
The whole release does remind me of a bootleg where they simply put on whatever they have available and the listeners just have to accept it and enjoy what managed to sneak out of the vaults. Looking at the ‘A2’ & ‘RL’ contents and ignoring any track deviations (proper starts/endings, chat, remixes), the only tracks missing are the ‘ER’ orchestral backing and ‘IOS’ take 1.

Agree that the remix is a bit meh and like you i’m not sure the much vaunted separation of tracks does that much for the bands music. I can’t listen to that version of “SSSS” its horrible. The “when i was a boy” bit completely obscures the descending guitar line. Its also inexplicable that they left not even a backing track of “Good Day Sunshine ” on here.
What bugs me about the whole thing is how it mirrors the vinyl release. Total waste of space with loads of interesting stuff in the vaults and instead we get repeats of take 11 of taxman, almost identical take 1 of “TNK” (when they could have highlighted the loops used for instance) and a totally pointless “I Want To Tell You ” where i’ve heard a really cool run through of the song with piano, rhythm and vocal. Same with “I’m Only Sleeping ” totally bizarre choices.
Nicest bit is hearing the studio chatter as you said.
There is tons of interesting stuff from “Rubber Soul ” sessions too. I’m expecting apple will leave most of it again in the vaults.
