From Robert Rodriguez’s book Revolver (which I recommend):Klaus brought the finished art over to George Martin’s office at EMI in Manchester Square. Without ceremony, he set it up atop a file cabinet for the unveiling before Martin, Epstein, the four Beatles, and a secretary. There was momentary silence as they took it all in, a heavy void that only served to stir Klaus’s nervousness with every passing second. It was finally broken by Paul. “Hey! That’s me sitting on a toilet!” Everyone gathered closer to peer at what he’d spotted. He was right; there he was, in a photo taken in Hamburg. George Martin tsk-tsked and said, “Well, we can’t have that.” “No, it’s great,” Paul protested. (Suffice to say, the offending image was removed.)
Possibly it was this one (though he’s fully clothed, so it’s minimally offensive):
I don’t see why this should be offensive or inappropriate!!! On the White Album there is a picture with Paul naked behind a pillar, they still left that on the back cover!

One difference between the two is that Brian was alive in ’66 and wasn’t in ’68. Hearing George M raising his concerns at such at image appearing on a Beatles LP might have concerned him enough to act, especially with the Butcher Cover having provided a fuss in the US.

I may be the only Beatles fan on earth who doesn’t know, and I’m loathe to reveal my ignorance. But this has irked me for decades!
Thanks.
I have trouble with that one, too… I’m pretty sure it’s John, though.
This was posted in the other Revolver thread about cover art:
http://www.iheartklaus.com/rev…..lver2.html
So I’m not the only one who has a hard time drawing George! I feel so much better now.
Did I mention this is my favourite album cover EVER? I could write an essay on it. I’ve stared at it till I was blue in the face and I still discover new things every day… kind of like the Beatles’ music.

I’d like to identify the photographer who took two of the photographs on the “Revolver ” cover. The first is a picture of Ringo located at the very top of the cover just right of center. Ringo is facing the viewer’s right and is shown from about mid-forehead to his neck. This seems to be a candid outdoor photo. The second is a picture of John located to the right of the cover’s center and just left of the photo of Ringo sitting on George’s large head. John is facing the viewer and his right hand covers his chin. So, who took these two photos? Bonus points if you also know where, when and why each photo was taken. Thanks for your help!

It’s about time EMI/Apple photoshopped John’s cigarette away, surely?
Why?
Back to the thread and Wogblog has more details on this.
A quote from the blog:
Can you help them to find out who took these photos? Bonus points if you can tell them the source where each photo was published (other than on the “Revolver ” cover, of course), when and where each was taken, and the purpose of each….
When they have solved this puzzle, a full list of the photos and sources will be published. The search is on!

Why? Same reason that the Abbey Road sleeve no longer show’s Paul’s cigarette, surely.

I didnt agree with that move by Apple, the same as i dont agree with taking cigarettes out of old Tom and Jerry cartoons or films from the 1950’s. I dislike revisionism. Are we expecting Apple to never show another image of the Beatles with cigarettes?

Oh, I’m with you 100% there. I’m just pointing out that they photoshopped Paul’s fag out on Abbey Road , so presumably there’s also grounds for doing the same to John’s on Revolver .
Sadly, I don’t know who the photographer was.

The Butcher cover was used for promoting the Uk Paperback Writer single – the pics i could find arent the best quality but i presume its the right one. It went pretty much unnoticed when issued, same as Johns interview with Maureen Cleeve that led to the ‘Bigger Than Jesus’ mayhem in the US when taken out of context.
Wow. I would never in a hundred years guess that Parlophone/EMI would use such a picture back then! Nice find @meanmistermustard & @Ron Nasty

Interesting interview with Klaus about the album cover here.
Might be worth a look, @Joe, to see whether any of his quotes are worth working into the article.

I stumbled into that the other day; I want it badly.
I can eyeball Klaus’s art all day, let alone a whole book of it.
