I do dislike it when people talk as if Magical Mystery Tour is a part of the run of albums conceived and created by The Beatles. The Beatles release of Magical Mystery Tour was a double ep which contained songs only from the film. The album was a compilation assembled by Capitol without any input from the group. It is the greatest of the Capitol compilations, and I realise that it’s how much of the rest of the world grew to know the songs, but it is not one of the string of original Beatles albums.
The confusion comes nowadays as MMT has been added to the core Beatles albums (the studio albums from ’63 to ’70 and Past Masters ) and sold that way. Buy the stereo boxset and there it is, right between Pepper and the White Album . People have accepted it as one of their self-created albums because of this.

My humblest apologies, Linde. My reply wasn’t really aimed directly at you, but at that it was third or fourth time I was making the point on the site since June. And as I’m sure you can imagine, it gets frustrating to keep making the same point. So when I said “people”, I really did mean it as a general “people” and not “Linde in particular”.
I first got frustrated when I saw someone argue it was better than Sgt. Pepper and a lot of the other “higher-profile” albums. I gave a big long response explaining why it could not be compared to any of those albums.
I expressed my disappointment that when they released the “canon” on CD, that MMT was included. It breaks with how they represented it. The Beatles as originally released in the UK with the non-album tracks collected on Past Masters (oh! oops! except for MMT!). Myself, though I definitely would have released the American album as a standalone later, with all its artwork, I would have had that big UK 1967 hole in Past Masters filled by their 1967 non-album tracks (which just happens to be the Capitol MMT).
To me that is really where PM falls down. It gives the impression that 1967 was the only year that there were no off-album tracks.
Again, I hope you will forgive me. My frustration was not aimed at you, I just found myself expressing it in response to your comment.

Offline I see why you get frustrated, mja, but you should bear in mind what Linde said, and also that most young people assume MMT is another one of the albums because it was released that way, as you clearly explain above.
Linde, I thought the same as you for ages before I realised, so you’re not alone I used to get really confused with all the info I came across online – so much to process all at once when you’re new to a completely unfamiliar world!

Offline I can see where you are coming from mja, but personally I think this is one of the better decisions they have made for a while. It is just such a great package and means we don’t have to buy it a 2nd time while already owning half the tracks.
I’m not sure when the US version of the LP was released here in Australia but I know it is the version I had many years back, we also had the “Hey Jude ” ‘album’ released here.

What did you have in mind for your preferred version of the CD versions and the 2009 remaster box? I guess they could have had “Magical Mystery Tour ” as an ‘EP on CD’, at a budget price when sold separately, and the other 5 tracks off the US release on “Past Masters “?
[EDIT] Or the whole thing on “Past Masters ” – which probably would have added a CD to that set and they could have had the 24 pager in there?

Good plan!
With those running times it would have fitted in nicely, and they could have included the ‘mystery tour’ booklet in the gatefold.
Erm – think I’ll try to get back on topic with my next post, which album were we discussing again?

ME TOO. 
Revolver is definitely not underrated. I don”t think I’ve ever heard somebody call Sgt. Pepper ‘s their favorite Beatles album, it’s almost always either Revolver , The White Album , or Abbey Road .

Yes, I do understand that Magical Mystery Tour wasn’t an original album, but I personally feel that the best way it’s represented is in the Capitol release (they actually did something right for once). However, in no way is MMT better than Sgt. Pepper . That’s ridiculous. Btw Abbey Road is my favorite.

Offline Past Masters nor Yellow Submarine exist on my computer, cut them up and put all the songs back into their relevant point in Beatleland (the Martin scores are with the ’99 remix album and dvd 5.1 isolations). MMT has been restored to its EP tracklisting with Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane added to the Pepper folder.

Offline @Mja Oh I wasn’t offended in the first place, no worries! I know how frustrating it is when people get easy facts wrong and you constantly have to tell them they’re wrong and tell them how it is. I’m just glad I know it now. I never really got into all that record company crap or into the way everthing was distributed and stuff.
You can’t really compare albums with each other and say that one is better than another, but you can say which one you prefer. It’s all a matter of taste. I know people who only like everything they did pre 1965 and people who are the other way around.

I agree. However, when discussing the Beatles’ best albums, Sgt. Pepper is quite often considered superior to Revolver . Not that I agree with that.

Yeah, I agree with you. It is probably because that is when they were actually getting their own ideas. The start of it because the White Album is where they found themselves.

Offline IMO it’s not underrated. There are a lot of other under rated albums like Beatles For Sale , and With The Beatles .
