I’ve always preferred Revolver to Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The latter has better production, and it’s not a bad album, but musically, Revolver impresses me more. Maybe I had to be around in 1967 to fully appreciate it, but I digress, this isn’t a thread to bash on anybody’s favorite album. I just feel as though Revolver isn’t really talked about as often as some of their other masterpieces. I only ever hear Eleanor Rigby and Yellow Submarine on the radio.

Offline Not sure I agree – a lot of Beatles books and retrospectives cite Revolver as the real turning point in their music and Pepper as the culmination. I know a lot of Beatles fans who consider it their best – I think some of the albums just seem underrated because people have a short attention span and so cite the same well know ones over and over.

Offline Yeah, I’ve found that people do that a lot. Say that Sgt. Pepper is ”the best” without actually having listened to it, in-full or at all, or having a different opinion themselves. Because everyone ”knows it is”, they just don’t argue. Silly, really, as it’s subjective.

I agree with tcanberra – I find that Revolver ‘s been most people’s default go-to Beatles album for some time now.

Offline Is it weird that my favourites are Help ! and Magical Mystery Tour ? I of course love Revolver and Sgt Pepper too but my favourite songs are on H and MMT.
I don’t think Revolver is underrated by anyone who has actually listened to its genius. I think with Pepper it was just such a radical thing when it came out. Not just the songs, the whole concept of it, the album cover, the psychadelia, all the urban legends and supposed references in it. Although they started being more innovative even as far back as Rubber Soul , Pepper was the climax of all that experimenting and change from lovable mop tops to the moustached and grown up legends that were emerging.

Offline It cant be that much of a hang-up for a band to have made Revolver and Pepper regardless of folks preference, or lack of. Throw in everything else and I cant held thinking if at times the Beatles are a little underappreciated and pushed to the side (Beatles and underappreciated in the same sentence
).

Offline Well, Pepper is a cultural milestone in a way Revolver isn’t. Musically, I think they’re both such astronomical genius that arguing over which is “better” is purely academic — like arguing over which Shakespeare play is the “best.”

Having just listened to Beatles For Sale again after many years I would even suggest that the experimentation really kicked into gear on that album and built up more noticeably as you suggest.

This – plus they experimented more with the instruments and the instrumentation. Just a few – African drums, bongos, Hammond organ; quite a few tracks are also more complex in their construction than on the prior 3 albums, along with a developing maturity in the lyrics.

Dont forget the faded intro on Eight Days A Week which was a bit of a novelty. And if we included session tracks from the same period you get the feedback intro on I Feel Fine .

Offline Well, I have just listened to “Revolver ” for the first time in around 26 years, and I think I now agree with the original post 
What an astonishing album. I don’t think I have heard anything so brilliant in years! I vaguely remember liking it ‘back then’, maybe I was just jaded on all things Beatle at the time, but I really am grasping for words to describe the impact of listening to it like it is new.
I think I have a new favourite Beatles album.
A few thoughts:
1) On Anthology George suggested that maybe “Rubber Soul ” and “Revolver ” are volumes 1 and 2 in a pair; ‘I think I disagree’ – “Revolver ” is another step above in terms of imagination and consistency (though “Soul” is great as well).
2) Speaking of George, he really steps up here, and his contribution to this album may be stronger than to “Abbey Road “.
3) It’s kind of interesting that, including “Magical Mystery Tour ” and “Yellow Submarine “, this one sits right in the middle of their 13 albums. It’s as if you have ‘development / attainment “Revolver ” / refinement’.

I do prefer Revolver to Sgt. Pepper . A bit more variety, I think. Of course, my opinions change every day so I have no idea what I’ll think of these two albums in a year or two.

Offline Same here, I prefer it too. I believe Revolver was the very last album of the Beatles I went to check out, back when I really started to listen to all their stuff (Not counting Yellow Submarine )
I remember being completely overwhelmed by it. It’s such a strong album and it doesn’t get the attention it deserves. When I look at articles about the Beatles, they always mention the same albums. I think you all know which.
Same goes for MMT by the way. Even though it has SF, Penny Lane and All You Need Is Love on it, it hardly ever gets mentioned. Besides those three songs there are other great songs on it as well, like Blue Jay Way , Fool on the hill..etc. The film might have been a fail, but the album sure wasn’t.

I do dislike it when people talk as if Magical Mystery Tour is a part of the run of albums conceived and created by The Beatles. The Beatles release of Magical Mystery Tour was a double ep which contained songs only from the film. The album was a compilation assembled by Capitol without any input from the group. It is the greatest of the Capitol compilations, and I realise that it’s how much of the rest of the world grew to know the songs, but it is not one of the string of original Beatles albums.
