as great as it is, I still prefer the follow-up ‘With The Beatles ‘… in fact, you could say that just about each album here on up until the end got better… that being said, they sure got outta the gate in a fury with this debut… Ringo’s out of his mind on this album…:-)
I prefer Please Please Me . I’ve said as much before, but it’s remarkable how good the album is for a debut, and holds strong against the likes of AHDN . I listen to it quite a lot. The original content and the covers blend together well and there’s always positive energy in the tracks. Can’t really fault it.

In ranking the canon of 13 albums I put Please Please Me at #11 saying of it: “Raw and charming. New meets old in seamless unity. Groundbreaking.”
Unless Paul McCartney knocks on my door I am unlikely to be impressed.

Nice to see some love for Do You Want To Know A Secret , a real showcase of their songwriting maturity so early on in their career. I put PS I Love You and Ask Me Why in the same category, I recommend you give the album another listen later on, as with all The Beatles catalogue new songs jump out, they’re all genius in their own way and sometimes it just takes a certain context to hear whats special about each one. Definitely didn’t appreciate what was going on in PS I Love You until at least double digit listens to the album.

You say you want a REVELATION, well, we all want to change the world.
It was one of the best discoveries of my life listening to all the Beatles songs for the first time, and then nearly every day afterwards. I’m sure it’s going to be the same for you Neely.

This post reminds me that I often think about whether I’ll live to see any Beatley 100 year anniversaries. The first would be Ringo’s birthday in 2040. I’d be 72 if I live that long when that date rolls around.

It is the best Beatles compilation tho.
I find it hard to accept that we have reached the 60th anniversary of Beatles albums being released. Have probably heard these 14 songs a thousand times each at least and they remain brilliant with some of the tracks continuing to sound incredibly fresh.
I still remember first listening to ‘PPM ‘ on the single cassette edition of ”62-’66’ and being blown away.
60 years ago – not a chance (for want of not swearing).

The LP cover is as legendary as the LP itself. It was a milestone and they created it in 12h. Mindblowing!

Insane. I know these songs are not exactly new releases, but listening to them so often keeps them so current and I forget just how old they actually are. But nonetheless ageless.

Aside from other things, it’s just a superbly-sequenced album, excellent obsessive work there from . The way it starts out – rocker/rocker/ballad – and varies that pattern with a few that are halfway between both, raising the excitement and relaxing, and repeating; and then it closes with the biggest rocker of them all, the one that definitively and literally ends the session. He makes sure to place the four oldest recordings – which the band are already advancing beyond – together in the album’s middle, because it seems best to have the album begin and end with an equal number of the Feb. 11 tracks.
So: George Martin takes these 14 songs and juggles them around; and chooses the best, most logical and satisfying album opener and closer, (while even invisibly editsing in an equally logical/satisfying count-in from another take, as the very first sounds we hear), and then fits everything in between like a jigsaw. Years before “Abbey Road “, he was already thinking kinda “symphonically” as far as album sequencing!
I’ve rarely been one to play a full Beatles (or anybody’s) album twice in a row, not after they weren’t new to me – their albums are generally so satisfying as a full statement, that re-playing all 13 or 14 (or 30) songs immediately seems as unnecessary as ordering more appetizers and another entrée after you’ve finished your coffee and dessert. (Plus I have a short attention span!) But there are two exceptions, two that have a kind of circular feel, where the closing track feels of a pair with the opener; AHDN is one, the other is Please Please Me . Definitely given them both two spins running a few times over the years.
(Tend to skip “Love Me Do “‘s repeat tho…)

Rare copy of a first pressing of Please Please Me donated to Cancer Research UK shop has sold for £4,200 https://www.dailymail.co.uk/ne…..ction.html
The vinyl was discovered to be a first pressing from the original masters of the Fab Four’s debut studio album Please Please Me , released in 1963, which features the Parlophone black label with gold text.
Knowing that Mary McCartney and Linda McCartney both had cancer, I’m glad the money is going into cancer research.
