Today is the fifty-fourth anniversary of this album’s release. I shall be spinning it today, of course.

I plan on listening to a couple of songs from the mass produced edition Apple CD box set they released 8 years ago in my iTunes.
Heck, I might even pull out my ’63 UK LP and study it while listening…

I like Please Please Me but compared to such classics as Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band, The BEATLES, and Abbey Road , it’s nothing.
If you're reading this, you are looking for something to do.

You know, this is absolutely my least favorite album. It isn’t bad by any means of course, but outside of I Saw Her Standing There , Misery , Twist And Shout , Please Please Me , and Boys I’m not a huge fan. At least, I certainly prefer the other 12 albums they released.

Wikipedia has one of the album’s genres as ‘Merseybeat’ and I can see why. The big Merseybeat acts at the time of PPM were The Beatles, Gerry And The Pacemakers, Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas and Cilla Black, all of whom were managed by Brian Epstein. The album itself IMO demonstrates how musically, all four acts were on a balanced level, releasing songs that sounded like they were still in the 1950s, but by the time of Sgt Pepper , The Beatles had achieved worldwide success, as well as a significant fanbase, towering over the others by a huge majority. Meanwhile, Cilla was still having successful and steady career (unfortunately, she didn’t make that much a name in the US, but did very well here in the UK for the remainder of her life), but Gerry And The Pacemakers And Billy J Kramer had completely dropped off the radar because both groups were still releasing Merseybeat and 1950s sounding songs while the rest of the music scene had begun to go psychedelic and experimental. So of course, PPM is nothing compared to their later output, because the album was in the in the same line as the other forgotten acts and their albums at the time.

I think there is really great songwriting on PPM . Some of the best of their career.

A very underrated album which shows the Beatles at their rawest and most primal. I still struggle to believe that they recorded it in all one day.
I enjoy all of the Lennon-McCartney originals and most of the covers are brilliant. At the end of the day it’s just a great R&B/Rock & Roll/Merseybeat album.
I prefer it to With the Beatles, Beatles For Sale , Yellow Submarine and Let It Be .
A Hard Day’s Night and Help ! just beat it in my album ranking.

They only recorded 11 of the 14 tracks that day…
Otherwise, I find this album relatively good. Not the most awesome album by them, but not the worst (the White Album , Let it Be and Yellow Submarine are much worse) either.
Some tracks on this album really annoy me though. But some are just awesome! At least with other albums, it’s less hit-and-miss, and more even.

They recorded 10 of the released tracks that day; ‘Love Me Do ‘, ‘P.S. I Love You’, ‘Please Please Me ‘ and ‘Ask Me Why ‘ had already been recorded. ‘Hold Me Tight ‘ was also tried out but got nowhere and remained unreleased until they resurrected it for ‘With The Beatles ‘.

Ah yes, I always forget about Ask Me Why . What complete and utter filler that is.

I like the sudden start stops and John singing “I can’t conceive” is always likely to raise a smirk.

I like Ask Me Why , i’d rather listen to it then Do You Want To Know A Secret and P.S. I Love You.
The worst song is probably A Taste Of Honey .

By far. Paul trying way too hard whilst George and John struggle to feign interest.

Of the early albums, I certainly prefer With The Beatles to Please Please Me because the former is more energetic in my opinion. Anyway, there are some great songs on PPM .
My favourites are probably I Saw Her Standing There , Misery , Anna, and also Ask Me Why , of which I love the laid-back feel.
In which sense do you consider the songwriting on Please Please Me among the best the Beatles did though, @sir walter raleigh? Not that I would disagree, just curious.

BeatlebugNot once does the diversity seem forced -- the genius of the record is how the vaudevillian "When I'm 64" seems like a logical extension of "Within You Without You" and how it provides a gateway to the chiming guitars of "Lovely Rita. - Stephen T. Erlewine on Sgt Pepper's

From a melodic standpoint, each original song on the album is irresistibly catchy and unique. Each song is just impossible to get out of my head. Especially when you consider the fact that it is their debut album, they write songs like veterans, layering cool harmony and rhythms. While it doesn’t really compare to Rubber Soul in a songwriting sense because the lyrics are really poppy and shallow, the tunesmanship is incredible.

Aw, I love A Taste Of Honey , and it’s actually because of those backing vocals.
