Well, the packaging is printed! But following your logic, von, vinyl was/is stamped, but now we’re in a CD, they are burnt. “Out of burn” doesn’t really seem to work!

IDK, mja, I kind of like that phrase.

But, now we have to figure out what phrase to use when you can get a downloadable mp3 anymore. Perhaps we should streamline and say “not available.”

Sorry MMM – don’t have the boots.  The notes say it is based on an unedited ‘Top Gear’ take discovered in 1988; in 1964 a second lead vocal overdub was added by John to make the version included in Vol 1 – this is apparently that version before it was overdubbed.  Hope this helps.

Thanks trcanberra. Not sure i like idea of it being “based on an unedited ‘Top Gear’ take”, it’s like when films are “based on the novel” and you find details have been changed. Don’t want to speak wrongly before hearing it but please god don’t tell me Apple can’t release an outtake without messing about with it nowadays.

Sorry – my poor hasty transcription – make that ‘it included this take discovered in ….’.  Seems all is well.

The real question, tr, does the track include include a full take? What is out there of that tape so far is – more-or-less – a breakdown take, some studio chatter, and a faded take (presumedly the full take that was overdubbed). I know you’re planning on listening to disc 2 Sunday. Could you give a rough description, and especially whether there is a full take. Much appreciated, as always!

^ Sorry I don’t have a boot to compare with, but I popped this one in early to try and answer the query.  It starts with some chatter; such as – “We’re trying to do it good – so can you give us something – it doesn’t matter what”.  Then a few false starts.  It then runs through what sounds like a full performance which has a single vocal from John, by my woolly-eared interpretation.  It runs 3′ 29″.  The main ‘take’ runs about 2′ 12″.

Huge thanks, tr. Your description makes it sound like it does include the full take. The double-tracked vocal version on Live At The BBC runs to 2 min 13 secs. The booted version of the single vocal with the early fade about 90 secs. So they have found something to include that hasn’t been bootlegged in full.

I just hope, in among the studio chatter, it includes the following exchange –

BBC man: “D’you wanna have a listen before we go on to the next one?”

John: “We’ll hear it back here, ‘cos if it’s all right here, it’ll be better in there, so it’ll be better out there than in here, because it’s crap in here.”

BBC man: “Yeah, but it’s not so good out there as it is in here, and you’ll think it’s worse than what it is… and it’s not nearly as bad as that.”

There are other voices during it, but to me it is one of the great examples of John in the studio. The logic of his sentence (for “better out there” read “better on the radio”) is devastating! You just wonder how fast a mind it is to come up with a line like that in conversation!

The way it is uncut shows how poor a working environment The Beatles had to work with at the BBC but Apple let the word “crap” appear on a Beatles CD?a-hard-days-night-paul-7 Expect a ridiculous edit that makes the whole thing lose its meaning.

Ha ha – no, I don’t think that whole sequence is on there; pity.
