^^^On a slightly unrelated note I forgot for a second that a lot of non-American countries use a comma as the decimal marker and not a point so I was really confused by your “6,9/10” and “7,5/10” until I remembered the aforementioned fact……
Well, anyhoo– let’s carry on debating MMT and Pepper
*Edit: F I D D Y!!!
An interesting exercise you guys have going on there–
Mine would look like roughly like this, though:
PEPPER
Sgt. Pepper ’s Lonely Hearts Club Band: 10/10
With A Little Help From My Friends : 8/10
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds : 9/10
Getting Better : 7.5/10
Fixing A Hole : 8/10
She’s Leaving Home: 6/10
Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!: 5/10
Within You Without You : 5.5/10
When I’m Sixty-Four: 7/10
Lovely Rita : 9/10
Good Morning Good Morning : 6.5/10
Sgt. Pepper ’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise): 5.5/10
A Day In The Life : 10/10
97/130 ~ 7.5/10
MMT
Magical Mystery Tour : 3.5/10
The Fool On The Hill : 8/10
Flying : 5/10
Blue Jay Way : 8.5/10
Your Mother Should Know : 6.5/10
I Am The Walrus : 9/10
Hello, Goodbye : 9.5/10
Strawberry Fields Forever : 10/10
Penny Lane : 7/10
Baby, You’re a Rich Man: 8.5/10
All You Need Is Love : 6/10
81.5/110 ~ 7.4/10
Huh Pepper for me surpasses MMT by .1 point….hmm….that’s surprising…..but nevertheless I like Pepper more than MMT, as more or less explained by agreement with the below comment:

Keep in mind tho, this is merely an exercise, I don’t rate albums considering their tracks individually, I rate them as a whole. Albums are not the sum of their parts, but an entire experience. But even in that front, I prefer MMT.
Very much agreed!!…..except I just think its fun to analyze things through numerical data so I just wanted to toss my hat into the ring and try out this exercise I just like the ~experience~ of Pepper more than MMT– and oh god the bass on Pepper *chef’s kiss* (it especially has a nice warm and full sound on the 50th-anniversary remix– even though those mixes aren’t canon, but still the bass sounds hella amazing on all those tracks thanks to Giles….but that’s a convo for another thread I think )

Oh yeah, I do this all the time! It doesn’t affect my rating on albums, but sometimes it’s good to know how one feels about things as much individually and as a complete force as well. For us nerds it’s just… fun.
If I were to rate every album based on the sum of the individual tracks no album would reach even a 9/10. I’ve checked.

Hmm I hate those mixesEspecially the drum & bass mixing on the title track and Good Morning Good Morning and that awful sped up version of She’s Leaving Home . Lovely Rita ‘s mix was great tho.

So, song for song, I give MMT the edge, BUT, and it’s a big BUT: Sgt. Pepper is much more of a coherent whole, it was utterly groundbreaking and world-changing, so…
Let’s call it a draw.
Good system, but you forgot Lovely Rita
oops.
I guess I have to use a system of averages then. I rate Lovely Rita a 3. That puts Pepper at 43 / 12 = 3.58 and MMT at 42 / 11 = 3.81

MMT>SPLHCB
When I put on Magical Mystery Tour , I always listen to the whole thing (even if there are 1-2 songs that I could do without). Whereas with SPLHCB , I love the first three songs (just a great journey), then skip to “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite” and then to the seminal “A Day In The Life “. The rest of the album just isn’t that great, and has too much granny music s**t.

I still don’t think of ‘MMT’ as an album, but it is a good collection of songs. However, only ‘Strawberry Fields Forever ‘, ‘Penny Lane ‘ and ‘I Am The Walrus ‘ would get on the ‘Sgt. Pepper ‘ album, so no contest really … ‘Sgt. Pepper ‘ is the better album by some distance! Strawberry Fields and Walrus are two of their best ever songs though!

Ikr! I can see where you’re coming from giving Getting Better a 3.5/10, but FAH is soooo cool! I remember I went a solid three days only listening to Fixing A Hole ….. May I suggest closing your eyes and laying back whilst listening so that you can truly appreciate the immersive environment of the song, Elmore James?

Huge fan of Getting Better as well. The only weak track on Pepper is She’s Leaving Home, the rest of it is perfection. That variety of sounds in that sequence is like no other. As for MMT, no song is weak necessarily, but the most acclaimed songs from MMT have never really hit home for me. Fool On The Hill, Blue Jay Way , and Baby You’re A Rich Man really make it for me.

Doesn’t mean a thing.
It’s a superb record regardless.
So is “1”, doesn’t make it anything but a compilation, and not to be compared to their studio proper albums.

MMT is a compilation yes. Also an EP. And a soundtrack. And the songs were recorded I think in less than a year-span, non of which had been released on a studio album before. All of this while the band was still together. It has a clear tone and pacing, as well as artistic cohesion, it even has an intro track. Take it easy with your technicalities, 1 was a decent album, but is clearly more thrown together and there’s no progression at all, it’s kind of arbitrary and cherry-picky an album for me. MMT is more of an experience based in psychedelic experimentation gone incredibly well, all of it the result of an actual project called “Magical Mystery Tour “, lead by McCartney. Magical Mystery Tour the album is just the music that came out of it, so why can’t I compare it, it’s so iconic, and important in the Beatles cannon and completely distances itself from other compilation albums having an undeniable personality and purpose in its recording sessions, that were made under the same conditions. It deserves to be treated with more authenticity. Also with better material than Pepper overall for meIt’s more of an “album” than any early record and it can be official and compared to Pepper in my book all day. Screw the studio, this is a subjective opinion, get over it. Objectively it is a compilation, but my comparison and everyone else’s I believe is completely justified. MMT is not your regular every-day compilation, it has a clear background and general mindset from the band at the time they were writing and putting together those songs.
Also weren’t your favourite albums bootlegs from Hank Williams and Bob Dylan?

I don’t want to go back to read all the nicknames and make a list of those I agree with, but I agree with them… 😉
MMT is an album in the sense that it works as one. It is musically coherent (with a blend of psychedelia, pop and baroque influences similar to Sgt. Pepper ) and none of the songs were included on another album. Even those who argue that it is “merely” a compilation should agree that at least the first half (the songs that made up the british EP release) were crafted as an original “album”. The rest – well, it works as an album. The only thing I would change is to add one to three more songs. Maybe Lady Madonna / The Inner Light or something that ended up on the Submarine soundtrack (I think we can agree that the latter definitely isn’t an album?)
I used to prefer MMT to Pepper. Now I’m not that sure anymore. Both have some of the greates tunes ever (A Day In The Life , She’s Leaving Home / I Am The Walrus , Strawberry Fields Forever , Penny Lane ) and both have one or two that are not bad, but far from my favourites (Good Morning, Pepper Reprise / Magical Mystery Tour ). Perhaps technically, if I ranked and rated all the songs to compare them, MMT would still outmatch the Pepper. But neither of them is more or less of an album in my opinion.

MMT went from being probably my 7th favourite Beatles album to my 4th the other day
the only ones I like better are The White Album , Revolver , and Abbey Road
I just find it a more consistent, more actually psychedelic (I like my psychedelia, hehe) listen than Pepper’s
Pepper’s is now my #5 fwiw

Its pretty clear to me that MMT is missing its “A Day In The Life ” as well as its “Within You Without You ” but it has a “Lucy” in “I Am The Walrus ”. Not a proper Beatles album, but MMT has great sequencing and songcraft, something that every music listener yearns for.

The big names songs like Strawberry Fields, I Am The Walrus , Penny Lane and All You Need Is Love elevate it hugely. I know it’s not a ‘real’ album, but those songs together in one playlist is hard for me to ignore. Very strong showing.

Sgt Pepper was the first Beatles album I ever heard so it will always be my favourite. I was quite young, so maybe it just sounds too nostalgic to me to ever be psychedelic, as I didn’t know any of it’s historical or musical context when I discovered it if that makes sense.
Magical Mystery Tour feels more like a collection of singles than a coherent album/LP, but it’s definitely the best example of their psychedelic work.
My best friend, who was not really a Beatles fan, discovered them one night while listening to MMT alone and drunk in his University halls. I woke up to a stream of messages from him telling me I was right all along about them and his mind was blown. If that doesn’t explain the target audience of MMT, I don’t know what does.
