You could buy a chair inspired by John and Yoko’s exhibition where they had unfinished chairs etc. You any good at eating on a half plate whilst balancing half a table so it doesn’t fall to the floor?

Not long back from a trip to my local Tesco’s. The album was on the shelf a few hours early. Oops!
Currently blasting out A Hard Day’s Night .

Waiting on my CD to show up tomorrow. I’m looking forward to the crowd noise reduction in a big way. I know that the “soundboard tape” issue with nearly inaudible crowd sound is a little disconcerting to hear if you are accustomed to “regular” live recordings. But I’ve listened to so many soundboards over the years that at this point, if I listen to a recording with a lot of crowd noise, I get downright cranky. And the Beatles’ live concert recordings with the screaming girls add a whole new dimension to “cranky” for me. I can’t listen to them, to tell the truth. But if nothing else, they show me exactly why I would have hated being at those shows, or at least I would have hated attending as an adult.
Much as I’d like live recordings to emulate “being there” as much as possible, they still never get there for me, and mostly not even close. There’s too much that happens viscerally at a show that you can’t get from any recording of the same show — and I’ve listened to recordings of plenty of concerts that I’ve attended. For me they are their own, separate way of enjoying music. Even with big-screen TV and Blu-ray video, with sound cranked to concert levels, it still doesn’t work — as much as anything, the video doesn’t match my concert experience because in real life, I look wherever I want to, and in video life, I’m stuck with what the director wants me to see. That may not be a bad thing, but it isn’t the same thing. Maybe we’ll finally get that virtual reality thing nailed down sometime soon?

Has it been released? I thought it was out after the documentary was in the cinemas.
If my memory is correct it comes out tomorrow.

Yep, tomorrow in the U.S. I’ll probably get a digital version of it, unless I can find a vinyl somewhere.

I’ll pick it up somewhere cheap hopefully. What is the retail price? Have Apple been sensible and selling it for £7/8 or are they being Apple and charging us £15 because its got “The Beatles” written on the cover?

£10 in Tesco. No waiting. Even until it’s actually released tomorrow.
It is a new version of the album, @William Shears Campbell. Completely remixed from the original tapes, and with four bonus tracks.
Overall, the sound is very, very good. I do think there are places where the audience are dropped too far back, but hearing it all together it works. Paul’s bass and George’s lead are impressive throughout. John’s voice is wonderfully hoarse.
I agree with mmm that it would have been far better to include the whole of the 1964 concert along with the second of the 1965 concerts. I first became familiar with the concerts through the 1977 album, and so that it follows George Martin’s blueprint doesn’t bother me too much.
What does bother me is the placement and order of the bonus tracks. Though there is a fade out at the end of Long Tall Sally and a fade-in at the beginning of You Can’t Do That , it can’t help but feel like you’re suddenly discovering they did encores. Which they never did.
It just feels wrong to have Paul insisting that Long Tall Sally has to be their last number, only for them to do another four after it, and end on the bizarre choice of Baby’s In Black .
I would much rather have seen them dropped between the original two sides of the album.

I rushed out for ‘Live At The BBC ‘, ‘Anthology’ and a handful of others but this I don’t care enough to even make the effort of ordering it online. I have the bootlegs and I’d rather have those than this, even if the sound is better.
I’ll buy it eventually, listen to it once and then forget it exists.
The intro for ‘Baby’s In Black ‘ is different to the ‘Real Love ‘ single as its from a different night? I love the intro on the ‘Real Love ‘ single.

Well Ron, back in the day, I would seamlessly crossfade these bonus tracks into the running order with a program like Cool Edit Pro where you’d have no idea there were any edits and I’d have a nice 17 song show ending with Long Tall Sally . I’ve had computer issues for years and never got around to getting my editing software back in play, but I think this is sounding like the perfect time to get back to where I once belonged. I’m picking up the CD later today and I think I’ll have a little fun doing what I used to do with live stuff on the computer to an album that I originally bought in 1986.
As far as them releasing more of these shows – let’s say have the people that buy this have no idea of the songs played over the 3 shows. And some of the fans, even knowing there are leftovers might not care. That leaves the people who want it all or at least the 1964 show and one 1965 show. I do agree that a special edition of both shows would have been the better choice than what we got, but on the other hand it’s somewhat of a compromise. I’m definitely happy to get 4 extra songs than simply the identical running order from 1977. I’m not sure why If I Fell didn’t make it, I was kind of hoping it would be on there.

And that’s what Apple do on almost everything. They want to appeal to the hardcore fans to buy it and the everyday individual who is caught by the name Beatles and wants to see what its all about and end up not quite appeasing either due to the material they are now releasing. The hardcore fan knows whats in the vaults and gets pissed off at what’s lacking, the individual hears not quite pristine recordings and gets on with their lives.
There should have been what Apple have given us and a complete set of the three concerts as most bands and artists would have done but the Beatles aren’t other artists and Paul, Yoko, Olivia and Ringo are far too close to authorise that.
A change in approach is desperately required but this is Apple who are stuck in years ago and all that matters is $’s. The days of selling millions like ‘Live At The BBC ‘, ‘1’ and ‘the ‘Anthology’ albums are gone but Apple are still chasing those figures to see if there is a market for what they now release. The sales eventually don’t reach their expectations and so they think there is little interest. The only two projects that had any balls and guts behind them in the last 20 years have been ‘Love’ and ‘Rock Band’, the first pushed by George (giving Paul his ego trip with ‘Let It Be Naked’) and ‘Rock Band’ driven hard by Dhani. A successor to ‘Live At The BBC ‘ was blatant and yet still took Apple 19 years; ‘Hollywood Bowl’ has been called for by almost everyone for goodness knows how long – and with it they took the easiest option and compromised.

In terms of “monetizing the vault,” and although it does annoy me at times, the current Grateful Dead/Rhino Records model isn’t horrible, as it does a fairly good job of satisfying both the hardcore and the casual fan: quarterly, numbered limited-edition releases (currently at 15,000 units each), a yearly Big Box (also limited release, at least in physical form), and one or two mass releases, usually the most appealing bits (which is to say, the best or the most sought-after show) culled from the Big Box. Plus some Record Store Day goodies. The limited releases nearly always sell out and are available only from GD/Rhino, keeping all of the profit in-house and keeping inventory levels under control, while the mass releases hit the usual outlets. It ain’t perfect, but it is pretty sweet to get that steady stream of “new” stuff from a band that’s been gone for over 20 years.
Of course it helps to have a vault with thousands of concert recordings in it, though most of the cream has already been skimmed off by now. And there’s somebody working on the “next release” full-time. (Of course, there are many Dead Heads who have been calling for the entire Vault to be digitized and available to everyone — for free. Or on a subscription basis, or a la carte, or whatever. Also not the worst idea ever…)
The GD approach isn’t precisely an apples-to-Apple comparison with much less unreleased Beatles material available, but given the Beatles fan-base, it sure seems like there would be enough interest and enough profit to get more product than we do. But million-sellers? To MMM’s point, if that’s the mindset, then Apple is stuck in some other time and place and definitely not in the here-and-now.
