The Beatles have been pitched against Elvis Presley in one of the most intriguing new release battles of Q4. The world’s most successful band’s new set of BBC recordings will be released in the UK on November 11, the same day a new retrospective by Presley, the biggest-selling solo artist in history, debuts at retail.
With a total of 63 tracks and with an introduction by Paul McCartney , the double album (triple vinyl) features songs and spoken word tracks from The Beatles’ classic BBC UK radio broadcasts. Containing 37 previously unreleased performances and 23 newly available speech tracks, 10 of these songs were never recorded by the group for EMI in the sixties. Volume 1 was released in 1994 and went on to sell over five million globally, across all formats. Of their performances for the BBC, Paul McCartney reflects, “We are going for it, not holding back at all, trying to put in the best performances of our lifetimes”.
Ooh, thanks for that. I wonder when the tracklisting’s going to be announced, and if there’s anything that’s not already been bootlegged. And also whether Apple have decided to tinker with any of the performances – the Anthologies (and maybe Live At The BBC , I can’t remember) upset a lot of hardcore collectors who hated the new edits made to archive performances.

superdeluxeedition.com add that the remastered Live At The BBC , released on the same day, will be renamed On Air – Live At The BBC Volume 1.
Now the guessing game begins about what the 10 unreleased songs are, and how many will be 1962 performances with Pete. Dream Baby, A Picture of You, Beautiful Dreamer, Chrimble Mudley…

An Elvis “duet” with Susan Boyle is coming out so I presume its on this new cash in. I hate these technology created duets as the artist who’s dead yet having his/her vocals used might not have chosen to do it. Let the artist rest in peace instead of raking together some nonsense to get a buck or two.
And is anyone really going to get caught up in a battle between two acts who stopped recording together years ago? Of course not. To bill as such is pathetic media hype to generate sales.
As for mathematics, Live At The BBC has 56 songs (going by wiki, too lazy to look at the album), the Baby It’s You single has 3 exclusives (ok its not commercially available but they are out there), On Air has 37 (reportedly) and Anthology has 1 (Lend Me Your Comb) making a grand total of 97. 88 different songs (not including alternate performances) were recorded by the Beatles. So if the numbers are correct we must be getting different performances of tracks already on LATBBC. Surely therefore they will give us one of every non-studio album recorded track we don’t have (Dream Baby, I’m Talking About You, A Picture Of You etc), a bbc performance of the other remaining tracks we didn’t get on LATBBC (eg The Night Before , I’m Happy Just To Dance With You , And I Love Here…), the non-hybrid AHDN , one of Ringo’s Honey Don’t vocals and some of the alternate non-studio album tracks (I’ve Got To Find My Baby, Lucille etc). I can see a lot of people not being happy if we get another Kansas City , Love Me Do or A Taste Of Honey , even if its a live recording, over a Pete Best track or something like eg I’m Talking About You even if the quality isn’t excellent.
And is it just me or is 37 songs on the double cd a bit few considering we got 56 first time round?

That’s what I’m afraid of myself…I have the original Live At The BBC , bought it in the early 90s and played it to death, but once I got the complete sessions on bootleg and heard how they’d edited the official release…I don’t think I’ve listened to the official one in a decade or more. This new set will probably suffer the same fate after I buy it, but it’s sure to have some sweet pictures in it 8)

The only songs edited on Live At The BBC were From Us To You and the very beginning of Keep Your Hands Off My Baby, it really began with Anthology 1 (or the unreleased 80’s Sessions album depending on how you view it). There was no amalgams of 2 different versions. The speech tracks were but that might have been more to do with the bbc archived Overseas discs used to compile the album than any possible editing by EMI when compiling the cd. A Hard Days Night would be the only one that might seem like an Apple edit but it is actually how it was originally broadcast back then. The only real grip would be the crossfades at the end of the songs and the difference in sources used (there is no doubt some of the officially released tracks are not as good soundwise when compared to the bootleggers).
"I told you everything I could about me, Told you everything I could" ('Before Believing' - Emmylou Harris)
Thanks for clarifying. The funny thing is, a lot of bootleggers aren’t averse to making there own mixes and edits. There are tons of outfakes out there.
I’d heard the reason why Vol 1 (as we may as well call it) had the speech/music crossfades was because no clean versions survived.

I can’t get the maths to work. 63 tracks – 37 unreleased performances – 23 speeches = 3 unaccounted for tracks. So will they reissue Lend Me Your Comb, or (more likely) include the Baby It’s You b-sides?

From MusicWeek.com,
Details of The Beatles’ forthcoming BBC album have been announced with a tracklisting including 37 previously unreleased performances.
The double On Air – Live At The BBC Volume 2 will be issued in the UK on November 11 and comes 19 years after Live At The BBC topped the UK artist albums chart and reached No 3 on the Billboard 200 in the US.
The new album will comprise 63 tracks in total, mixing songs with 23 previously unreleased recordings of what are described as in-studio banter and conversation between the band’s members and their BBC radio hosts. It will appear on CD as a 180-gram vinyl album with a 48-page booklet and be the first Beatles album issued by Universal (via Apple Corps) since it acquired EMI.
Ten of the album’s songs were never recorded by the group for EMI and include a version of Chuck Berry’s I’m Talking About You and the song Beautiful Dreamer, both of which make their commercial debuts. There are also alternative versions of six songs that featured in the 1994 BBC album: Little Richard’s Lucille , Chuck Berry’s Memphis, Tennessee, Chan Romero’s The Hippy Hippy Shake, Ray Charles’ I Got A Woman and the Carl Perkins songs Glad All Over and Sure To Fall.
An original Beatles song never previously released also appears, Happy Birthday , Dear Saturday Club, the group’s tribute to the BBC Light Programme radio show Saturday Club on which they regularly appeared and were avid listeners.
Paul McCartney says of the performances the group did for the BBC and now part of this album: “There’s a lot of energy and spirit. We are going for it, not holding back at all, trying to put in the best performance of our lifetimes.”
The forthcoming album also includes BBC versions of a number of the group’s most famous songs, including I Saw Her Standing There , Twist And Shout , Do You Want To Know A Secret and If I Fell . All the tracks have been mastered by Guy Massey and Alex Wharton at Abbey Road Studios, while on the same day as this album comes out a remastered version of Live At The BBC will appear.
In all The Beatles recorded some 275 different musical performances for the BBC between March 1962 and June 1965.

As is Lend Me Your Comb – and since that was only recorded once, that has to be one of your unaccounted for three, Joe.
Still no touching of the 1962 Pete recordings and, of course, no Rolf…

And most, if not all, of those Pete 1962 recordings are on the Purple Chick complete set…looks like I’ll stick to that for listening purposes.
Thanks for the info, guys!

It’s not available on Amazon in the US. I wonder if I’ll have to order the UK version or if it will appear later.

I really like that cover – I much prefer the colour compared to LATBBC 1.
I’m feeling quite excited about this. I don’t think I’ll be able to afford it just yet though.
