I heard the 2 session discs. I thought they sounded good and were compiled well.
Then I heard the album mix and EP a second time.
The album mix sounded better to my ears on second listen. I think the problem with this release is that the original intent was to create a “played live” album. So, it wasn’t intended to have clarity necessarily. So when you take something intentionally meant to be messy and muddy and and try to make it sound super clear that’s not going to work that well.
Still don’t know about that hiss on the EP but it’s only a few seconds anyway on a track that’s less than 2 minutes.
I’ve never been a fan of the Glyn Johns Get Back mixes and I’m still not.

It’s getting reported that the Japanese SMH CD release of the box contains the correct mixes of the Johns ‘Get Back ‘ album, a comparison between the European and Japan mixes is here. ‘For You Blue ‘ in Japan included George’s original vocal whereas the European release is a newly edited 69/70 variation with an overdubbed George vocal.
It all seems a bit of a mess.

Beatles Album Flop
‘Let It Be ‘, the follow-up to the Beatles ‘Abbey Road ‘ has entered the UK album charts at #2, a disappointment since their previous release hit #1. Rumours of disappointment within the band have been reported with rumours of disharmony and a possible split.

Mean Mr Piggie said I don’t care how many bootlegs have turned up, (since Napster started I’ve listened to a lot, decided it’s too ‘mish-mash’ and mostly out of context, (I bought a vinyl bootleg in ’83 that gave me ‘What’s The New Mary Jane ‘ and a ‘Help ‘ outtake on the same disc. They didn’t care for the story, I don’t care for them), pirate versions). I’ve never found any of it satisfying. To me it’s like listening to the American version of Revolver and thinking you’re getting the same feeling as hearing the original UK version. It’s just not.
I don’t know if I’m allowed to mention them by name but the ones I have seem to have been well thought out and are presented quite nicely.

A long article detailing the release process of the ‘LIB @50′ box to show how the Japan and RoW sets came to be. What’s more understandable is the original 2020 contents for the box set before it all changed thanks to Covid.
Last April 2020, Universal Music mentioned the upcoming 4th of September 2020 box for Let it Be in a mail to their subsidiaries around the world.
The planned release number was 602507138691 for a 5 disc deluxe boxed set:
CD1: Giles Martin remix
CD 2: Glyn Johns Mix
CD 3: Full rooftop concert
CD 4: Outtakes
Blu-ray: 5 High resolution versions of CD 1
So Apple ditched the Rooftop, handing it as a juicy bonus to Disney, and added gave us another disc of outtakes and a super exciting bonus EP.
Can me suspicious but since it was scheduled for release in 2020 doesn’t that put Giles reason (it being better to watch and therefore not waste a disc of audio) out of the window, or was it a rethink? Who knows.

I’m listening to the Glyn Johns mix for the first time right now
I do definitely like the Spector mix better, but this is still cool!
I think it’s a bit too sloppy to have been the actual album that was released, but it’s nice to have an alternate version like this

But then the idea was for it to be a bit sloppy, @Vera Chuck and Dave. As John would say of the original idea, the plan was to show them with their “trousers off”. I love the fact that it’s not that polished, but let’s you feel like you’re eavesdropping on them in the studio.

I think the Johns’ album would be much improved if the running order was heavily revised, especially due to side two which is a mess.
Get Back version one (May 1969)
Side one
- “One After 909 “
- “Rocker”
- “Save the Last Dance for Me“
- “Don’t Let Me Down“
- “Dig A Pony “
- “I’ve Got A Feeling “
- “Get Back “
Side two
- “For You Blue “
- “Teddy Boy“
- “Two of Us”
- “Maggie Mae “
- “Dig It “
- “Let It Be “
- “The Long And Winding Road “
- “Get Back (reprise)”
To have ‘LIB ‘ follow ‘TLAWR’ is two ballads which doesn’t work as it kills any pacing, and the whole of that side is a mess. ‘Dig It ‘ is decent enough for the first few listens but most will agree Spector was right to lop most of it off, and therefore, as it was, nowadays it would be almost as irritating and hated as ‘Bip Bop’. You’re pretty much going back to ‘FYB’ for anything more upbeat, which is a hell of a long time on an album.
As for John; he called the tapes s**t, said it was the Beatles with their trousers down and that he wanted to show they couldn’t do it anymore as a band. Did he have anything positive to say about the sessions and tapes until Spector turned up?

I kind of like that there’s really no final version. The Johns mix is the rehearsal, the Spector mix the recording, and Naked is an idea of what a polished follow up to the White Album might have been like. Taken together they’re almost inadvertently what the project was meant to be.

Afraid links to cyberlocker sites, either directly or through links to third-party sites that contain them, are not allowed on the forum @Toxic34. As Joe said on the subject recently in Post 18 of this thread, after removing a download link that had appeared there:
I’m uneasy about people posting non-official download links containing Beatles content. Although the occasional link probably won’t cause us problems, if we start allowing some and not others there’s a consistency problem, and if we allow everything I could potentially face some legal issues.
Some filesharing undoubtedly goes on privately between Forumpudlians, but posting such links publicly on the forum could see Joe in trouble and risk the site and forum being closed, something none of us who are active here would want to see.

Like I said, I understand.
Anyways, does anyone here have the Japan version in their possession, just either to have listened to or compare with the version from elsewhere? If so, do you think this was a conscious decision to differentiate between mixes and versions and intentionally create a Japan-only version, or just a mistake that went unnoticed by Giles and Okell until it was too late?

I personally like the set we got, but I’d certainly do it differently myself, and make it 8 discs. Like this.
-Disc 1: Remastered original album and original singles, as well as 2020/2021 mix of “The Long And Winding Road .”
-Disc 2: Glyn Johns 1969 Mix
-Disc 3: Glyn Johns 1970 Mix
-Disc 4: Let It Be …Naked
-Disc 5: Apple Sessions and Outtakes
-Disc 6: Apple Jams and Rehearsals
-Disc 7: Rock And Roll Oldies
-Disc 8: “Live”-Rooftop performance and all extant January 31 takes

Maybe we’ll get a soundtrack Edition of Jacksons Get Back with much more session stuff and the complete Rooftop and Jan 31 content. Fingers crossed.

Would be nice. Also, since a CD contains up to 78 minutes of material, in my theoretical 8-disc box set, maybe Disc 1 could have both a remaster of the original Spector mix and Giles and Okell’s modern mix together as one. Of course that might mean having to move the singles (also combining original mix and the modern mix on the same disc) to another disc, but what the hell, right?
