A largely pointless discussion with Giles is the latest episode of the ‘Fab4Free4All’.

We do learn that Giles is informed how many discs he gets to fill but instead of asking why therefore he doesn’t shove it full with music or why we get a crappy 4-track EP it’s all ignored (maybe it really is a bonus as Apple found an unused EP in the cupboard and gave it to Giles as a gift). Other note is that Giles has picked the outtakes tracks largely as they show the Beatles as buddies and paint a nice picture or are interesting. Whoopeedoo. Personally, I’d rather have damn good music.

For anyone interested who doesn’t know already; ‘Suzy’s Parlour’ and the complete Rooftop concert are in the documentary. The reason being Giles didn’t see the point of filling up the limited number of discs with things that look better on camera. That sounds fair enough. It doesn’t sound like there will be a separate soundtrack however.

On a side note. Why is it nowadays that in many interviews the questions that should be asked are ignored in favour of keeping it nice and friendly? The obvious example is in politics when so often politicians can spout complete s***e whilst never answering the question or being pulled up on their replies, but it’s now also more apparent in sport, music, entertainment etc. Maybe I’m just noticing it more and it always was.

I have to say I largely loathe the political class, I don’t care what shade. Margaret Thatcher started it by saying “Oh, that’s not the question people want to hear, what they really want to know is (x)” and then talk about something completely different and pre-prepared totally ignoring the question asked. I also hate that they are never, ever wrong and seem incapable of apologising, never answer simple yes or no but obfuscate, always defer to “The opposition did it like this 5, 10, 15 years ago and got it spectacularly wrong” rather than what new ideas they have to put something right, and basically spout hot air for sod all benefit. Rant over!

Politicians cannot say they were wrong as some part of the media (and social media) crucify them as soon as the words are uttered and their ultimate aim is to remain in power or get into power (for good, bad or indifferent reasons). Even when it comes to colleagues in the same party, they are incapable of doing so. They can only ever go after opponents where massive dollops of hypocrisy is shoved out.

My whole life that pretty much all of the sports media i’ve seen. Softballs and typical jargon. No accountability for an inexcusable loss due to a horrible coaching decision. I don’t think Giles deserves to get grilled, but this nonesense with Disney reminds me of the new Star Wars trilogy, where they involve people that are a part of the legacy but we can’t get a straight answer as to who is responsible for huge and sometimes controversial decisions, and instead just dodge it in a media roundabout. How much liberty do Peter Jackson and Giles Martin actually have?

A lot of the world, especially now, is about narrative. Everything has become a construct. I’m all about showing the truth behind myth, and John was too. It’s the basis for God . It is what it is.

This was first posted on Steve Hoffman forum and then posted elsewhere online. It’s disappointing to see takes previously released on ‘A3’ and ‘LIBN’ but surely the rooftop performance of ‘DLMD’ is not the crummy edited ‘LIBN’ hodge-podge and ‘Oh! Darling ‘ is longer here. Of course, there are examples of where Apple have released previously released outtakes on the deluxe sets but with differences ie the takes of ‘Rocky Raccoon ‘, ‘Not Guilty ‘ and ‘Helter Skelter ‘ were all extended/fixed.

It is looking an increasingly depressing release compared to the previous deluxe releases.

I’m just hoping the idea there won’t later be a soundtrack release is a sleight of hand to encourage us to buy this rather than wait it out for that.

If not, there’ll be lots of rips of the documentary audio doing the rounds.

I still am of the opinion that Apple felt almost obliged to release deluxe sets of ‘Abbey Road ‘ and now ‘Let It Be ‘ due to how they went about the contents. There is still the TV series which may be the stand out but it could also be all cut up, it depends on how much Apple are willing to be shown (cue folk saying Jackson has full control etc but I’m not convinced).

I’ve always been eager to get new Beatles music but October has been very expensive (it’s the month when everything gets renewed as I pay yearly where possible), so I may look to trial a streaming site initially. At some point I will buy the set but I’m not as excited as I was with the others – the ‘Abbey Road ‘ release substantially dented my enthusiasm.

Has there been any update on the original film since Apple said it would be out? I think that was said when we were getting the cinema release which isn’t happening.

There hasn’t that I’ve heard, @meanmistermustard, but then I’ve always thought its release would be as a bonus feature on the DVD/Blu-ray rather than being shown alongside at the cinema as they did with Shea and Eight Days A Week . I suspect Jackson’s cinema cut (which must have been nearing completion when we went into the first lockdown, if not complete) was 2 hours or more, tagging another ninety minute onto that I just felt unlikely.

Looking back at the Lord of the Rings extended editions, Jackson did those after the cinema versions, remaking them to include scenes he chose not to include, rather than the cinema editions being an edit of the extended versions. I think what happened this time, because of lockdown, with time on his hands he sat back and created his extended edition, and the decision was made to forgo the cinema release, especially as lockdowns kept coming and going.

Sorry. I meant the home release of the original being announced around the same time as when there was going to be a cinema showing of the Jackson film. Not a cinema rerelease of ‘LIB ’. Both of which look dead. Are we getting the Jackson film on DVD/‘BluRay’?

I’m lost on what the hell is coming out aside from the documentary streaming on Disney+, the book and the deluxe ‘LIB ’.

I always believed that a few months after the cinema release, a DVD/Blu-ray would be announced, but that it would be an extended version of the cinema release (which is essentially what the series is), and that it would include Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s original as one of its extras, rather than it being a stand-alone release.

I don’t doubt there will be a DVD/Blu-ray release of the series, as the release being on Disney means not everyone will have access, and think Lindsay-Hogg’s original will be an extra on that (and maybe even Jackson’s cinema cut now).

Each of the LotR‘s films extended versions got four disc releases on DVD – two for the film, and two of extras. I could see this get a five or six disc set, three for the series along with a couple of discs of extras; one of those being the Lindsay-Hogg version.

‘LotR’ was an original cinema release tho where the standard method is then for home release with some kind of special edition(s). If the cinema screening has been dumped in favour of a streaming documentry release, that might change the picture. It also might not.

That looks quite disappointing, the track and disc length of those jams and outtakes in is disappointing to say the least. Not a fan of a few selections and even more of the exclusions. Only one disc from the Jan ‘69 rehearsals? Where are the extending Billy Preston jams from both 69 and 70? Honestly probably not even gonna buy this considering I still don’t have deluxe POB or ATMP , slightly better albums originally (imho) and much better deluxe releases.

‘POB’ deluxe, and the earlier ‘Imagine ‘ blow the others apart with the wealth of material we got,, ‘LIB ‘ one looks like a reluctant sigh before a shrug of the shoulders in comparison.

I think the excuse of not including tracks that they think are better watched on film is pretty weak. Yes, seeing the Beatles recording ‘This Boy ‘ would be better than just listening to an outtake but, still, give us as much as possible regardless if you are asking me to pay for the latter.

You need to find the Beatles Twickenham Sessions 8 disc set. More than you can shake a stick at…..

Twickenham and Apple studio sessions combine to make up January 69 rehearsals. Twickenham is only about half of it, but that’s what I’m referring to when I say the length of the tracks is underwhelming when I’ve personally heard much longer and more complete jams and songs from those rehearsals that may have been included.

The Daily Beatle has posted Mike Carrera’s detailing of what’s new, old, edited and altered on the ‘LIB ‘ set (Mike has previously covered ‘POB’, ‘AR’, ‘TB’ etc).

Surprisingly there are a few bits and pieces (literally) from Twickenham but it’s really disappointing to see how much Apple have fiddled with the material and how many performances are incomplete. Don’t go ditching any of the bootlegs.
