I know there is a similar thread on here already, but I cannot consider McCartney’s Naked ego trip as anything more than an addendum. There were two albums, Glyn Johns two attempts at Get Back , and Phil Spector’s Let It Be . The question here is were either of Glynis’ versions better than Spector’s.
I believe that Glynis’ first Get Back craps all over LIB .
Much truer to the idea of the concept. Some beautiful cuts that still sit in the vaults (I say that combo of Save the Last Dance for Me/Don’t Let Me Down is one of the great Beatle moments).
I could go on about other choices Glynis made, and probably will if this thread is picked up, but throwing it open to you. 1969 Glyn Johns. 1970 Glyn Johns. 1970 Phil Spector. Please don’t mention LIB … Naked here. It doesn’t count.

Online There are 4 acetates/mixes/collections of what Glyn put together although the first wasnt meant to be considered for a full release, more a sounding out of what was thought to be the best at that point. The 3rd was a slight tweaking of the 2nd and the 4th was Glyns last attempt before the tapes were ditched for however many months for many a reason (one i think being Abbey Road ). Glyn also worked on a collection of Oldies and Jams from the sessions which never came to anything.
I find the Glyn Johns albums are a little too rough, certainly for how the beatles wanted to be seen, I think it was John L who said they should have been released as it would have shown the beatles with their trousers down but that was never going to happen.
There are certainly some cool things on there that Johns put together: Let It Be with the swirling organ sound underneath could be my favourite version but i love Georges stinging solo in the spector mix just a little bit more; The Walk is a fun 56 seconds and could have been used instead of Dig It (both were rightly edited down); Ive Got A Feeling was rightly selected for Anthology 3 and yeah Save The Last Dance followed immediately by Dont Let Me Down are fun.
The biggest problem is all of the Get Back /Let It Be albums have flawed selections. For Johns Teddy Boy shouldnt have been anywhere near the albums as its obviously a run thru, fun at times but at 3:40 its too long and it couldnt be edited down like Dig It was eventually (Johns mix was at its shortest nearly 4 minutes which was way too long as well), the best Ive Got A Feeling was on the roof and whoever chose the released Dont Let Me Down got it spot on as much as i do like the cut from the 22nd January.
The great thing about the 4 Glyn put together is you can see the road to what was finally released by Spector, Maggie Mae coming in along with Across The Universe as time went on and each mix was rejected by one Beatle or another, the gradual shortening of Dig It. If anything it makes me appreciate what was officially released more – tho i still heavily dislike what Phil did to ATU and TLAWR.
So for me its Let It Be even tho it has problems.

Glyn was sticking closer to the idea of the album being a true soundtrack to the film…if I recall correctly, he also put snippets of between-song banter and jokes in between songs to give it the feel of being a “fly on the wall” (similar to what ended up on the bonus disc of LIB …Naked).
As ghastly as much of Spector’s production is, it saved the album overall…doubtless MORE fans and critics would have noticed how weak an album it was had the original Get Back been released.
Still wish they’d released it with the updated PPM photo from ’69 and the tagline “…featuring Let it Be and 12 other songs!”

The released version by Spector is much better.

The version of Two of Us (On Our Way Home) is horrible. The versions of Don’t Let Me Down and I’ve Got A Feeling are nearly as bad. Teddy Boy damn near derailed McCartney’s debut solo album. I’ts an even bigger car crash here. I could continue ……
