I played the Capital Records “Help ” over and over. Before Rubber Soul , Help re-introduced the Beatles after they’d been playing Dylan’s Freewheelin incessantly (and the weed bit as well). They were losing that jingle jangle moptop sound. Don’t forget, this is when George 1st heard Classical Indian music live. Acoustic guitars ruled. John in the pit singing a Dylanesque tune. And yeah, I really did enjoy George Martin’s 007 spoof sound. This time it was EMI who slapped together a full album, not Capital (a la MMT & Yesterday & Today). Take it in the spirit of the times. James Bond meets Bob Dylan as the Lads puffed away…from England to the Alps to the Bahamas.

I was listening to Help ! not long ago and I kind of felt the album was a little weak. There are plenty of strong classic songs on it. But there are some songs that over 40 years for me have gotten a little worn out (Another Girl , Tell Me What You See , You Like Me Too Much , Act Naturally (even though I love Buck Owens and the Beatles version is a great cover), Dizzy Miss Lizzy ). What is interesting is that there were a number of songs that could have been on this album but were not. Yes It Is , I’m Down , That Means A Lot , Wait , Bad Boy , If You’ve Got Troubles were all recorded prior to the album. Yes It Is was released as the B-side to Ticket To Ride , and in the UK, they didn’t want to put a single track on an album (Ticket To Ride was part of the soundtrack which is why it’s on the album). I’m Down should have been the closer on the album, but they chose Dizzy. Why? Money. They made a lot of money by having their originals on the singles. Bad Boy was another Larry Williams cover, and since they chose Dizzy Miss Lizzy they probably felt two Larry Williams tunes would be too much. Personally I would have chosen That Means A Lot and Wait over You Like Me Too Much and maybe Tell Me What You See or Dizzy Miss Lizzy . They probably gave George two songs on it since these were his first originals since 1963. If You’ve Got Troubles is not as good as Act Naturally , so I can see that being dropped.
Anyway Help ! is not as good as say A Hard Days Night or Rubber Soul , but it’s still a solid Beatles album and I definitely have played it countless times!

I haven’t listened to this album in an embarrasingly long time, so I pulled it out again today and I am now remembering how much I love it.* Even the weaker tracks (Another Girl , Tell Me What You See ) bring back happy feels.
*I wouldn’t put it among my top three, but I love it anyway because the Beatles.

And yes, It’s Only Love is my favourite from the album. I’ve always had unpopular opinions anyway.

My only wish with Help ! is that they’d either come up with 2 more songs and eliminated the covers or done different covers or something. I like Act Naturally , though when it arrives at the opening of what used to be called “side 2” it’s a little jarring after 7 excellent originals. Dizzy Miss Lizzy , though, has to be among their weakest studio performances. A great song that they performed more effectively many times!
Anyway, much love for Help !.

I never had a problem with Act Naturally . I think it fits perfectly, seeing as it is film-themed. Dizzy Miss Lizzy , though — not only was s it weak, but it’s horribly jarring after Yesterday . I suppose it was a last-ditch attempt to reestablish the Beatles as a rock band, after melancholy stringsy ballad Yesterday .

There isn’t much rock and roll on ‘Help !’ aside from ‘Dizzy Miss Lizzy ‘ so it may have been to remind everyone – plus they needed an additional track for the magic 14. Come ‘Rubber Soul ‘ they didn’t care enough and ironically fixed up a ‘Help ‘ reject to get the holy 14.

My parents had several Beatles albums when i was very young and for some strange reason Help ! is the only one i recall hearing,I recently listened to Help for the first time in years and was instantly transported back to my childhood ! I have listened to it many times since and love the record, for me its when you can first hear The Beatles sound changing,my fave track is “act naturally” even though it’s a cover! – plentiful love for Help from me!
