Macca became, more consistent at Rubber Soul . He was hit (All My Loving , I’ve Just Seen A Face , And I Love Her ), and miss before RS

Hm, never thought of that before but you're right!  I'd say it wasn't until Revolver that the quality/quantity of the Paul songs becomes more or less equal to John's.

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

I think his most direct lyrics were on Rubber Soul , You Won`t See Me specifically.

I personally find “Help !” to be one of their best albums, I don’t know if that’s just personally but it includes not only some of their best known work, including the crowd favorite “Yesterday ” but has an extremely solid tracklist in general. Though you could argue that all of their albums before “Rubber Soul ” are underrated, something that is probably true, but I feel that this is one of the albums that I could easily see be just as appriciated as the others. So just to stop whining about the world not agreeing with me, I’ll conclude by saying that  I love me some “Help !” and I hope others do  as well, because that would be swell.

And I’ll try to post something soon rather than just create topics.

I find it difficult to comprehend, with all these sorts of posts, how a bunch of albums which helped fire up and maintain Beatlemania, plus broke sales and charts records, can be considered underrated.

Holla! (That’s what the kids say nowadays, right?)

I like Help ! the best of the early albums, and as much as Rubber Soul Generally I find its best songs (“Help ,” “Ticket To Ride ,” “The Night Before ,” “Hide Your Love Away,” “Yesterday ,” “I’ve Just Seen A Face “) more emotionally expressive and satisfying than the ones on Rubber Soul

Funny I always reckoned ‘HELP’ as the weakest album of all…very disjointed. They’re no longer moptops but haven’t yet figured out how to move to the next stage…? Also Macca’s weakest songs are on this album, the film songs anyway. ‘Yesterday ‘ woulda fit better on ‘Rubber Soul ‘. But you know what they say about opinions….

....ya won't be interferin' wit the basic rugged concept o' me personality would ya madam?

”You know what they all say about opinions…”

Exactly. All this is down to personal taste. The thing is with me with ‘Help !’ is that I see it as an album to go with the film, probably because there are a few songs on there that are a little weak (and with YS too). With any of the remaining films, though, the lp is strong enough to be a stand alone album. That is why ‘Help !’ may be a little ”underrated”.

Moving along in our God given ways, safety is sat by the fire/Sanctuary from these feverish smiles, left with a mark on the door.

In another one of their rankings Rolling Stone placed Help ! as the number 1 soundtrack album.

I really don’t get why so many see “The Night Before ” as “weak.” It’s an awesome, smokey torch song! I’ll concede that the guitar solo is weak, though. “Another Girl ” is slight and bratty, but it still grooves — I get a lot more pleasure out of it than “Gonna Lose that Girl,” which I find kinda ploddy and boring. “Tell Me What You See ” is a bit naff, I admit, but at least it has pretty harmonies — “It’s Only Love ” is irredeemably naff, IMO; the worst track on the album.

It’s primarily George’s two (weak) songs and “Dizzy Miss Lizzy ” that drag the album down a bit for me – they sound stuck in 1963 as if 1964 never happened. And yeah, “Tell Me What You See ” isn’t great either, but it remains a minor favourite of mine for the hypnotic way Paul and John switch between harmonizing and singing in unison. But even on the weaker material, there’s something exciting about hearing the group experimenting with new sounds – new guitar tones, electric keyboards, contrapuntal backing vocals.

GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

I Need You is currently my fave George song, I love the Wah-Wah guitar effect, his vocal and the John and Pauls background vocals. Its also one of my favourite Beatle songs. As for You Like Me Too Much the piano/keyboard battle solo is brilliant and I love how the bridges flow so neatly into the verses.

I find Tell Me What You See to be a frustration song by the lyrics, the shaking tambourine on the title line could be in the manner the wringing of someone’s neck, the way the drums bring it back together when it seems to be over as if they have to keep on going, even the delivery of the vocals have this way of sounding like one side of an argument where you just cant get your point over no matter how many times you have tried and you’re exhausted.

Help isn’t my favourite album, but not my least favourite either. It’s a good album and I like most songs on it. To me it’s certainly stronger than Beatles For Sale , which is one of my least favourites, definitely. I think it’s my 5th favourite album or something like that.

Favourite songs are Ticket To Ride , I’ve Just Seen A Face and You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away .

Yesterday and Help are great songs, not my favourites, but great.

My least favourite is Dizzy Miss Lizzie and I find it kind of disappointing how there are 2 covers on this album, even though I love Act Naturally .

You Like Me Too Much is one of those songs I often completely forget about.

The rest of the songs are enjoyable. Nothing special but they’re good and enjoyable. Wouldn’t really call them fillers, as they’re strong enough imo. Not single material, but just good songs on an album. Many artists should wish they were able to write material like that.

I LOVE Help ! It’s one of my favourite albums. It’s got 2 of my favourite songs on it (You’re Going To Lose That Girl and You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away ) and has a dylanesque folksy vibe. True it’s not as innovative or ground-breaking as Pepper but there’s something about it I love.

If I look at this album overall, I think I may even prefer it to Pepper tbh..

Volume pedal, actually! Wah-wahs weren’t invented until two years later. I think “Across The Universe ” has the only wah on a Beatles record, although I’ve read that George was recorded fooling around with one during the “Get Back ” sessions.

That’s why I said effect, which is how it has been described in a few places.

That’s true for me as well.  On any analysis, I would put Pepper well ahead of Help !  but somehow Help ! is the one I put on more often to listen to, currently I’m alternating with AHDN .  In my mind, those two feel like a natural pairing,  in the way that RS and Revolver go together.

I think Help is a good album – the high points equal anything the Beatles ever did – but the presence of a handful of filler songs drag it down a couple notches.  Personally, I’m not a big fan of:

Another Girl
You Like Me Too Much
Dizzy Miss Lizzy
Tell Me What You See

That said, these songs do have some redeeming features (great harmony vocals, interesting musical bits).

It is a very good acoustic pop album overall though.
