One opinion I’ve held for some time now (and I understand others hold as well) is that some of the songs on Help are stellar, while others are rather sub-par. So awhile ago, I had the idea of making a Spotify playlist with only the good songs (imo)–in other words, a Help EP. It goes as follows:
You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away
I need you
You’re Going To Lose That Girl
Before anyone says anything, yes, I am aware that side one of the original album is the soundtrack to the movie and it wouldn’t actually make sense for a Help EP with this track listing to have been released in real life. I ask you to suspend your disbelief and humor me .
Has anyone else done this before? I’d be curious to see what people think of this as a hypothetical (and I of course would love to see other people’s preferred track listings if they have them on hand ).

First thing to note is that your list means two EPs, not one.
They did do something similar with A Hard Day’s Night , with the EPs Extracts from the Film… and Extracts from the Album…, so not an entirely wild proposition.

I think 8 songs is a bit too many as it is over half the album. If it were a 6 song double EP, like MMT, though obviously the songs are much shorter on Help , my choice would be your list minus ‘You Like Me Too Much‘ and ‘You’re Going To Lose That Girl‘.
If 8 songs, maybe ‘It’s Only Love ‘ instead of ‘You Like Me Too Much‘.
Ringo fans wouldn’t be happy though, as he wouldn’t have a song to sing on the EP.

My ignorance regarding record formats is showing… Anyway, if I had to cut two songs from my list, it would probably be the same ones you said @alittlebitolder–though I really love You’re Going To Lose That Girl , and it would be a pity to have to cut it.
As for Ringo’s one song being cut…honestly, tough. It’s a mediocre cover (which is nothing against Ringo, I just don’t particularly like the song), and there wasn’t any rule I know of that Ringo had to have at least one song per album (AHDN did not have a Ringo feature, after all).
Thank you for mentioning the AHDN EPs @Ron Nasty. That gives me some ideas…If I could make two EPs–one from the movie, one from the “album”–I think it would look like this:
Movie EP: Help , You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away , I need you, Ticket To Ride
Album EP: You Like Me Too Much , Tell Me What You See , I’ve Just Seen A Face , Yesterday

Taking eight tracks from an already released album was actually pretty standard practice during 1963-1965, with the exception of With The Beatles .
PPM had the EPs Twist And Shout and The Beatles No. 1; AHDN had the above-mentioned Extracts from the Film… and Extracts from the Album…; while Beatles For Sale had Beatles For Sale and Beatles For Sale No. 2.
Help ! had the Yesterday EP released from it but they didn’t bother with a second, probably because increasing album sales led to decreasing EP sales.

I think if you were doing the two ‘Help ‘ EPs, you would need to balance them out a bit as the ‘movie ep’ is 3 (mostly) John songs +1 George song, while the ‘album ep’ is 3 (mostly) Paul songs + 1 George song.
I think the trick would be to replace one John song with a Paul song on the ‘movie ep’ and visa versa on the ‘album ep’ …. or am I thinking too deeply? 🙂

No no, I think you’re onto something…I used a similar logic when I made my own single-album track listing of the White Album awhile back. The only problem is…I really just don’t like any of Paul’s songs from the movie all that much, if I’m being honest. Nor am I a huge fan of John’s contributions on side two, for that matter. The problem with having one George track on each (good as those tracks may be) is that it limits the possibilities of which songs to cut. I suppose, under duress, I could cut You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away or Ticket To Ride in favor of, say, the night before (emphasis on duress); a much easier decision for me would be to cut Tell Me What You See in favor of It’s Only Love (since I feel roughly the same about both songs).

I agree with your change to the ‘album ep’ and agree that Paul’s songs on the ‘movie’ side of the album are the weakest.
It is a hard choice which of ‘You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away ‘ and ‘Ticket To Ride ‘ (‘Help ‘ has to stay as it is the name of the ep), but probably leave out ‘Ticket To Ride ‘ (even though it is probably in my Top 10 Beatles songs) as it was a single already so most people would have it?
Of the two ‘Paul songs’, I’d probably include ‘The Night Before ‘, but ‘Another Girl ‘ would do equally as well!

If we’re talking the US Capitol Help ! release, then yeah, it could have been a double EP without the crappy instrumental numbers
