he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

Gonna be honest No Reply ‘s a bit unsatisfactory as an opener. Would’ve preferred I’m A Loser to open.

For me, it’s not that I hate it, it’s I just don’t listen to it as much as the rest of the album. I always tend to find myself skipping it, but I don’t hate it. It’s how I feel about a certain number of Beatles songs.
"Was she told when she was young
That pain would lead to pleasure?
Did she understand it when they said
That a man must break his back
To earn his day of leisure?"

Call me old-fashioned, but I don’t understand the cult of skipping certain songs on albums. This isn’t directed towards any album or listener in particular, but I think it’s important to try and listen to music as the artist intended – warts an’ all. That means no skipping Mr. Moonlight on Beatles For Sale , or Revolution 9 on The White Album .

It’s important when listening to an album for the first time, I agree, but music is for enjoyment. If you don’t enjoy it, you shouldn’t listen to it.

Any of the first three songs would’ve worked fine IMO.

That is a good point. No Reply is fine (you’ll notice it’s around mid tier on my ranking). It does a fine job opening the album. But it’s not great. It doesn’t do a great job opening the album. That’s where the lack of satisfaction comes in for me, and why I think I’m A Loser would have worked better.
Worth noting that I’ve often forgotten which of these 2 songs was the opener, and I guessed I’m A Loser , but ended up being wrong on that point.

I do think that “No Reply ” is a good opener to the album, given the darker tone of the album comparative to the previous albums released. I don’t quite agree that “I’m A Loser ” should be the opener given it’s really depressing and deals with more personal tones comparative with “No Reply ” which is more in the lines with the topic of love, which the Fab Four really discussed aplenty on their previous albums.
Again, feel free to disagree with me and explain why “Mr Moonlight ” should be the album opener.
Side note: I do like “Mr Moonlight ” quite a bit, but I think it’s mid tier. Apologies to fans of this song

1. No Reply (I love the perfect fourth harmonies in the chorus; and the bridge is priceless! …the ending /last chord was disappointing, but I can overlook that).
Followed by
2. What You’re Doing (McCartney’s vocals are supreme in this song).

Eight Days A Week would have been a great opener, except it doesn’t sound like the rest of the album.

I think it would have been great. Those chiming guitars on the intro are stunning.

Every Little Thing is the best song on this album and maybe the most underrated Beatles song imo. I love how John’s delivery sounds so defeated and sarcastic.

Ok so here we go let’s sees
14) Honey Don’t – Ringo’s country music has always hit me the wrong way. no originality value on it at all. 1/10
13) What You’re Doing – awful vocal melodies, that seem to be either singed incoherently, or just on an entirely different scale as the instrumental. 3/10
12) I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party – I enjoy the fast pace, but I don’t think it is memorable at all, it had been done, and it had been done better. by other people and them as well. 4/10
11) Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby – a no brainer, with some obnoxious vocal melodies. I can appreciate the rock and roll stops throughout. 4/10
10) Eight Days A Week – honestly I don’t see why this song is so beloved. taking into account The Beatles where already three records in, this is far from their best material. the lyrics and melody are just cheesy and generic, even if it is one of the best produced tracks on the album. 4/10
9) Every Little Thing – I can vibe to it in the right mood, but I think it could’ve used some riffs and distractions, I feel it might be a little redundant. 5/10
8) No Reply – Paul’s vocal ad-libs shine enough to hide John’s lack of effort. it is memorable enough, I’ll say that. 6/10
7) Words Of Love – one of their most decent covers. it is not their highest point on the album, but the melodies out-do Buddy Holly’s version in my opinion. 6/10
6) Mr. Moonlight – I used to have this one lower but lately I’ve found myself enjoying it a lot, pretty damn good. 6/10
5) Kansas City / Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey – I think I never had paid much attention to this track until I had to do this list. honestly I’m impressed, it is a very decent rock tune, it is plain and simple but also feels refreshing. 7/10
4) Rock And Roll Music – a personal favourite of mine, I like the energy, the vocals, and the plain instrumental. might be derivative, maybe so, but it embodies a very virginal yet fun type of rock hysteria and I enjoy it a lot. 7/10
3) I’m A Loser – John’s performance is great, the melody is original and it overall feels focused. 7/10
2) Baby’s In Black – I love the melody, and the pace and energy make it to me a big bright spot of originality in the album. compositionally it works in many levels and it is sorely underrated, in the case of early Beatles era. 7/10
1) I’ll Follow The Sun – I prefer it over Yesterday . to me one of the most beautiful acoustic pieces Paul has composed and it is very much endeering. excellent sharp lyrics, vocal melodies polishes af, and an original vibe that predicts Rubber Soul . 8/10
