Coincidentally as I scanned the forum just now, I’ve been listening to this album for the past several minutes. Judged by the Beatles high standards up to that point, it’s the weakest album, but it’s still a damn fine record. The originals on it are pretty much flawless…it’s only a few of the covers (mainly Mr. Moonlight and Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby ) that really Let It Down and keep it from being as good as the three preceding albums.

People usually seem to resent this album,I think it’s one their finest work real close to Hard Days Night. I think it’s the album where John changed his musical style and George-Ringo improved a hell lot on Guitar and Drums respectively, seriously drumming on this album is just Fab and John’s vocals also seems to be a little different but Paul didn’t improve much maybe he was still tired after finishing AHDN .

I really enjoy this album, I definitely don’t resent it anyway. John’s voice does sound a bit different somehow, and I’d have to say Lennon-McCartney was improving quite a bit for this album. All the Beatles were great on here, and personally I think What You’re Doing and I’ll Follow The Sun are excellent, but they may not match up to Can’t Buy Me Love or Things We Said Today . KC/Hey-Hey^2 is possible my favorite cover thingy on this album, but Everybody’s… and Honey Don’t I really like too. and Rock And Roll Music . Oh, and Words Of Love . Mr. Moonlight isn’t as bad as most people make it out to be, though it is still a weaker track. (To be fair, the original isn’t very good either.) Of course then you’ve got Eight Days A Week and the great opening trio of sadder songs. I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party is pretty average by Beatles standards, at least to me, but it’s still good.
tl;dr=The album is very underrated.

Very.
Also, my personal favourite pre-Rubber Soul album cover (by the Beatles)
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

It has one of my favorite, if not THE favorite song – What You’re Doing . It has the most beautiful melody.

Yes, What You’re Doing is fantastic. One of Paul’s finest early Beatles songs.

Not just the music, but the lyrical structure hooks me as well. A hidden gem. Well…not to us.
The LOVE version with Drive My Car and The Word is what hooked me on it. I couldn’t believe it was in there, really, because LOVE was mostly their famous (or at least critically acclaimed songs among fans)

Have always loved ‘What You’re Doing ‘. I once endlessly looped the drumming intro and let it play for an age.
And a reason to post one of the best Beatle outtakes there is and wonder once again what on earth were they thinking not putting it on Anthology – far more ragged than the final cut and John’s singing lead with Paul.
I love this album more than the three that came before it.

Just to remind you Northerners…
That’s the one Beatles album I had in childhood. That’s what I looked at. Now of course growing up with this album I had no idea of its place in the canon. I heard of the hits on the previous albums but never experienced them. So for me, apart from the hits on the radio from other singles and albums, this was the actual Beatles and I always wondered why the radio wouldn’t play these great songs like Baby’s In Black or I’m A Loser or Honey Don’t ! I know every corner of this album, every note, every instrument (thanks to the helpful blurb on the back detailing who played what where, uniquely for a Beatles album). I think John’s songs are stronger than Paul’s this time around, but I don’t have any firm favourites, its one of the few albums where it’s all good for me. I’ve always wished George sang more songs the way he did for Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby , I love all their Perkins covers.
Of course now that I’m all grown up I know this album is…still cool!
I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe. This has been true for 2016 & 2017 but I may have to get more specific in the future.

This album is so under-rated. Sometimes its referred to as the Beatles“Country-Western” album and sometimes its considered a “throw-away”
with the Beatles busy touring while it was being made. This album and
songs like this show the nucleus of what was about to come in Rubber
Soul and Revolver . They’re already playing with more complex harmonies
and unique guitar riffs. It’s not there? And yet [George] Martin is still a huge
part of the creative process, but this album shows they’re ready to
explore.
What do you think?
I agree with you, this album is definitely not a throwaway. I would not consider one of their greatest albums, but in my opinion it’s underrated in absolute terms. I think so many people focus on the fact that it does not contain songs which became really “popular” (except for Eight Days A Week ), and that after A Hard Day’s Night one would expect only original songs on a Beatle album. But all in all I consider it a very good effort, even considering it was recording in a rush. I agree that Mr Moonlight is a letdown (Leave My Kitten Alone would have been a much better choice) and some other tracks weren’t performed at their standard. But the album is a step forward, it’s bridge connecting A Hard Day’s Night and Help ! I regularly give it a spin (I prefer the stereo mix over the mono mix) and it sounds fresh to my ears as the very first time I listened to it.

It’s funny this topic just popped up, because as I have been saying all day, I just got this album. I mean, I’ve heard it before, but I haven’t worn it out yet. So I think that as an album it’s not the most cohesive, which may be why it’s so underrated, but the original material on it is extremely good.
I love the wry title and cover photo

Actually I was just looking at my original LP while playing my iTunes. I do that sometimes. Pretend that I’m actually listening to the record, while studying the album cover.
