60 YEARS OF BEATLES BEING ON SALE!I personally love tracks “Every Little Thing ” and “What You’re Doing ” as well as Mr. Moonlight The best. Not a bad song on it, although I’d prefer to sometimes skip No Reply .
Best Beatles album cover, next to Yellow Submarine and White Album .
60 years. Wow. I know John once said he thought Beatles music would stand up in any era, unless music appreciation radically changed. Beatles For Sale still sounds great. Insane to think it’s 60 years old.

Beatles For Sale and its cover are so often associated with a tired out and ragged group who were on their last leg of several punishing years on the road. But the album still has so much energy. The rock covers are a little behind the songs they were writing at the time in terms of maturity and depth, like No Reply or I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party ; but they make up for in it with energy that you can still pick up on in the recordings 60 years later.
Spending a lot of time with this album is really worthwhile. It has extremely catchy hooks, timeless lyrics, and great performances by the band, particularly on vocals. So much to enjoy, and yet so often dismissed. Thier loss, its a great album.

‘BFS’ is a fabulous album. Alongside some of the other Beatles albums its a step back but only because they had advanced so far in under two years and it was only natural they would have a breather. I maintain that it has the best opening run of five tracks in the entire Beatles catalogue (possibly outside of compilations).
There are still clear signs of maturity in the songwriting, instrumentation, arrangement and production, it’s just that they were utterly knackered and didn’t have the time nor energy to come up with another six originals up to their standards.

The Fabs have great voices in all albums (my favourite of all time, all four of them) but you can’t deny the energy and passion they had in the early albums. That alone warrants going back and back for more of Beatles For Sale .

I’m probably not the first to suggest this, but what if the two sides were simply reversed?
Somehow it seems more logical to start with the fade-in of Eight Days A Week , open side 2 with the more abrupt No Reply , and close with Kansas City . Thereby also relegating Everybody’s Trying… to side 1 closer.

I like the idea of ‘EDAW’ opening the album but I’d more opt for a reworking of the track list than a simple side switch. It’s an intriquing idea. What was the jumbled up cassette order

Hmm. That’s quite terrible.
The biggest dilemma when changing the running order is why not just swap one of the covers for ‘Leave My Kitten Alone ‘ when you’re at it; I’d happily lose either of ‘MM’ or ‘KC’ , going on the regulatory George and Ringo vocals.

I think No Reply is up there with the great album openers not only in the Beatles discography, but of all time. It isnt as ceremonious as Help !, Sgt. Pepper , or AHDN (all three are all time great openers in their own right), but I like how BFS does away with any theatrics and just comes right out the gate with the heartbreak and insecurity that comes from unrequited love. Its an immature approach to a relationship to be sure, but captures a very real feeling that comes from being ignored by a love interest even though you are fully aware that there isn’t any valid reason for their silence aside from a lack of interest or a geater interest in other people/things. It could work in any spot on the album, side 2 track 1 being a great choice, but the boldness to put No Reply first is part of the reason The Beatles operate on a different level from everyone else.

I think the problem with ‘EDAW is that it’s too happy and joyful an opener for an album that is not, it would set the wrong vibe whereas ‘NR’ sets the tone perfectly yet still retains moments of energy, apparent joy etc (that middle eighty bridgey bit – “If I was you…”). As said above tho, it is an intriguing idea and maybe it could be pulled off with a reordering of the tracks.

Yeah, it’s as though they picked up just where they had left off, closing AHDN with I’ll Be Back , after the likes of Twist And Shout and Money.
