Folks around the web are reporting that iTunes has renumbered existing Anthology metadata as a result of the new Mastered for iTunes on all Beatles songs to coincide with the US Albums release.
Apparently existing Anthologies are being renumbered as 1/4, 2/4 and 3/4 – which implies that set 4/4 is on its way shortly 
Is this what Howlett was working on I wonder?

Offline Interesting, but an ‘Anthology 4’ seems like a bad idea to me, only because it implies that we’ll get more of what was offered in the first three which was a lot of mash-ups, poor editing and alternative versions of the same songs which all ready had alternate versions made available, such as ‘Ticket To Ride ‘, ‘I Saw Her Standing There ‘, or in other words, many of the same songs offered on 1994’s ‘Live At The BBC ‘ project. If this new ‘Anthology’ were to offer an unedited 20 minutes+ ‘Helter Skelter ‘, amongst other tracks that fans have been lobbying for for years, then yeah! Great! But if the more recent releases such as ‘Anthology 1 -3′, ‘Love’, and especially ‘Naked’ are any indication of what’s next, then I’m much more interested in more ‘Bootleg’ releases instead to be honest…:-)

Is this what Howlett was working on I wonder?
Isn’t there an ‘Anthology : The Highlights’, or something like that? Perhaps that’s “Number 4″…:-)

I’m afraid I just don’t believe in the myth of Anthology 4. Don’t get me wrong, I am not in any way suggesting that Apple will never revisit the vaults to put together something new, and maybe even soon. I just see no rhyme or reason why they would attach, what would presumedly be a career spanning collection, onto the end of a nearly twenty-year-old project that spanned their career, and included six CDs in (roughly) chronological order. It would be like an addendum – ooo, and there’s these that we didn’t think were worth it first time around! That just doesn’t make any sense to me.
Anthology is the name of a project, not a catch-all for a series of archive releases – as Dylan came up with with The Bootleg Series, which allows him to add what he wants from whenever he wants whenever he decides. Anthology began with That’ll Be the Day and ended with The End .
If there is another career-spanning “archive” release at some stage, near or far, I just wonder what would possess them to call it Anthology 4, destroying The Long And Winding Road that the first 3 Anthology sets trace.
EDIT: And as Billy Rhythm points out, iTunes does have Anthology: The Highlights. Is that #4 in their renumbering?

Offline Maybe Anthology 4 will be the working title or, as Billy Rhythm said, Anthology Highlights is number 4.
There has been a lot of talk that Now And Then has been finished off by Paul and Ringo and is ready for release which might have heavily influenced Apple’s decision to sanction and compile a new collection of what’s remaining. I highly doubt any CD/LP space will be given over to the 27 minute Helter Skelter or Carnival Of Light (and that’s if Yoko, Ringo, Paul and especially Olivia (given George’s reservations) are willing to agree to their release in the first place). Realistically the best we can hope for are edited versions of those and if that’s the case then what the point in the first place? As for any and all songs considered can Apple resist the temptation of more of their edited monstrosities that we are forced to suffer every time any of the original Anthologies are played? I seriously doubt it.
Aside from all that there is a chance that Apple could get this one right – they fixed Live At The BBC for On Air Volume 1, didn’t muck about with Volume 2 and sensibly put out the Bootleg Recordings without any fiddling about, aside from patches where needed from inferior sources. However the messing about is back with The US Albums so cause for concern remains.
Personally I’d rather see either expansive box sets of studio outtakes (either by albums or years), live, and demos than a career inclusive 2-cd tag along after-thought that is, or smells like, a hastily compiled hodge-podge of live tracks, demo’s and outtakes.

I wouldn’t mind a “new” kinda “concept album” built around the ‘Carnival Of Light ‘ track (maybe even resurrect the ‘Zapple’ label!). There’s certainly more of this experimental stuff laying around the vaults, and as you pointed out the sheer length of ‘Helter Skelter ‘ & ‘Carnival Of Light ‘ would certainly take up ample space for an album, maybe even throw in that great ‘Take 20’ version of ‘Revolution ‘ that you just posted in the other thread. There’s another track from around the same time as ‘Carnival Of Light ‘ (the ‘Penny Lane ‘/’When I’m Sixty Four’ sessions that began before Christmas 1966) that I have from one of my older Beatlegs which is called ‘Down In Cuba’, anybody else heard this one? It’s no fake for it most definitely is John Lennon playing the “master of ceremonies” on this recording overtop of circus/fairground (or “Carnival”) music, much along the lines of ‘You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)’. I always thought that this was perhaps an outtake for the ‘Everywhere It’s Christmas’ Pantomime for that record sees them “travelling” the world and for whatever reason (probably because it’s just too wacky) ‘Cuba’ was dropped. It’d be a most interesting project if they were to go this route, a departure from the “usual” compilations…:-)

Offline Never heard of Down in Cuba, there is a track called Down in Havana from the I Will sessions.
The Beatles went thru a period after Pepper of jamming (in the loosest terms of the word), maybe they could put a couple of those as well. One was a recording entitled Anything that went on for a while which was described by Lewisohn as basically the four making a racket for a while, it must still be in the vaults if he’s heard it. They could throw in a few from the Get Back rehearsals as bonus tracks.

Offline Down in Cuba (aka Down in Havana) is a Lennon home recording, aided and abetted by Richard Starkey, and probably dates to December 1967 (John refers to “this time of year” which would indicate close to Christmas. Personally, I wouldn’t want to see recordings that were recorded during The Beatles career, but not intended for The Beatles, included – other than those early demos like Bad to Me, which they could easily have decided to release. Recordings made for their own amusement though, I wouldn’t include them myself. However good they are. And Paul is said to have many home recordings, mainly made as soundtracks to his home movies, that were recorded during the same time frame.
You have to draw the line somewhere between what is and isn’t Beatles.

Yeah, that’s it. Bits of it have appeared in different guises, for example I heard the backing track years before this as ‘Mellotron Music #1’ which may suggest that parts of it were recorded at another location as well…:-)

Offline Ooh, i have Down in Cuba filed away in my iTunes Lennon Home Demo’s file. Never listened to it, another in my pile to get thru that i probably never will.
Come And Get It was never intended to be a Beatles track but was on Anthology 3 but then wasn’t for their own enjoyment it was fully fledged out and recorded in EMI, supposedly there was objection raised about its inclusion before it was passed. There is a great demo of Goodbye that was given to Mary Hopkins, maybe best kept for a solo-Paul Anthology type release (tho not called Anthology).
I do believe there is enough in the vaults for projects such as studio outtakes and that it wouldn’t be scrapping the barrel but releasing it as Anthology 4 is only setting Apple and the release up as target practice for critics. I have no idea how they would put out Now And Then however as it would never fit on any project that goes back to the 60’s unless it did go from ’62 – 70. Maybe an Anthology sessions disc but what we already have isn’t that great leaving aside the whole ‘Paul, Ringo and George playing together again’ factor.

The Beatles Rarity writes that Dehru Dun was “recorded sometime between March and July 1969 at Trident Studios” whislt “George was pulling double-duty producing Radha Krishna Temple’s single for Apple Records titled “Hare Krishna Mantra.” Paul McCartney and drummer for Cream, Ginger Baker also assisted with the single”. Going by that it could be Paul but may not be Ringo.
Wiki places the recording during the All Things Must Pass sessions.
Anyone know any definitive info on it?
Can’t see it ever appearing on a Beatles album, hopefully in a George boxset one day. We need that Olivia, we already know George has some amazing music in the vaults.

Offline The Beatleg that I had only said that it (‘Dehra Dun'
was “from the ‘Get Back ‘ sessions” but liner notes were rarely accurate on Beatlegs and often misrepresented by design, it actually has more of a ‘White Album ‘ kinda sound though, and George does mention that he wrote it in India during the ‘Anthology’, which reminds me of another great unreleased recording, how about ‘Spiritual Regeneration/Happy Birthday (Mike Love)’ seeing the light of day, I love that recording and it certainly could use some “remastering”…:-)
