Well, the title of this thread is pretty self-explanatory. In your opinion, what are some notable Anthology songs or song fragments, whether they’re good or bad?
I like the Anthology versions of Across The Universe and Strawberry Fields Forever . Something isn’t bad, either. I also like the beginning of Mr. Moonlight when John yells (or perhaps screams would be a better word) “Mr. Moonlight” and then they say some things (I’m not exactly sure what) and then he sings/screams it again.
The Anthology version of Tomorrow Never Knows is quite annoying and I am so glad they changed it before putting it on Revolver .
Also known as Egg-Rock, Egg-Roll, E-George, Eggy, Ravioli, Eggroll Eggrolli...

I love the early version of Norwegian Wood , find the early version of And I Love Her with its (If You’re Going to) San Francisco intro fascinating, and stretching a little wider into BBC (there is one BBC track on Anthology), I think Soldier of Love is one of the greatest “lost” covers of their career.

Offline Three that always come to mind when thinking of the Anthology series are:
Not Guilty . Notable for being a great ‘lost’ George song but a horrid horrid edit.
You Know what To Do – another lost George song which is really good in its innocence. Deserved to be completed for release back in ’64 back Ringo lost his tonsills and .
In Spite Of All The Danger – a cracking song and a rare collaboration between Paul and George. Why was it edited?

Offline I like the Anthology version of Why Don’t We Do It In The Road?, it’s cool hearing a version of that song that isn’t as heavy, and I like how Paul is singing the Anthology version.
Also, Rocky Raccoon . I like how Paul says “sminking,” and then he goes on a tangent and comes back with “meantime, back on the table.”

Offline Leave My Kitten Alone sounds awesome. John’s spoken word part on You’ll Be Mine is strange but funny. I don’t know why Hallelujah I Love Her So was edited, it wasn’t necessary.

Offline Take 5 of Got To Get You Into My Life . The cool organ drone opening, the “i need your love, i need your love, i need your love” part, a fun fade out – a really interesting alternate take with a very different feel to the released version.
George’s jokey comment to I Me Mine from Take 15 “You all will have read that Dave Dee is no longer with us. But Mickey and Tich and I would just like to carry on the good work that’s always gone down in number two” followed by the unedited Take 16, which to me shows that Spector got it right.
The rehearsal of Im Only Sleeping has such a great vibe, ive no idea how they would have worked that into a final cut but 50 seconds of goodness.

Agreed, I love the “sminking” take of Rocky Raccoon . “He really was sminking of gin… and it did him in in the end… poor Doc.”

Offline Demos and/or early takes of SFF, ADITL and IATW. Especially the home demo of SFF – listening to John playing and singing into a home tape recorder sends chills up and down the spinal cord.

Offline Not on the cds but the video and dvds had studio fragments and other outtakes. One of these segments was Takes 12 – 14 of I’ll Be Back which all broke down and its fascinating to hear Paul forgetting to sing with John & the band starting up when John isnt ready – a glimpse into how they recorded that song. We also got Take 1 of No Reply (not the June demo Take 1) which fits in neatly before Take 2 which was on the Anthology.
Its always so enjoyable to hear the four in the studio whilst recording, i’d be delighted to get more of that even tho we got a whole load thru Rock Band and Love.
As for the discs, Oh Darling with John singing lead with Paul sounds so damn good and then John announces Yokos divorce just came thru and improvises.
The very funky Take 1 of Come Together with a fabulous vocal from John and Ringo’s drumming on the money already.
The Long And Winding Road as it is the proper naked version being stripped of Spectors OTT overdubs.
Shout is another for being both; its a good rave up with all 4 getting a moment in the singing spotlight yet another pointless edit – would another 30 seconds have driven it into unbearable garbage? Its not as if they were struggling to squeeze everything on.

Offline The anthology version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps is so precious! I think I love it just as much as the final version.
Of course all the demo’s and takes of SFF. It’s interesting and nice to see how that song came about.
I do think there is stuff on it that was just unnecessary, as some songs sound too much like the final versions.

I agree. I had been a beatles fan for a long time when I first bought anthology, but I had only known the red and the Blue Album + the White Album and some songs from their other one. I think i knew about half or 3 quartes of their songs but I didn’t know Tomorrow Never Knows because I knew very few songs from revolver and Rubber Soul .. So when I listened to anthology I startd to love the beatles even more but thought that Tomorrow Never Knows was the worst song ever made (samething goes for because) Then I listened to all songs from all albums and although I’m still not the biggest fan of tnk I don’t hate it (btw I love because since I know it non a cappella)
Anyway as I mentioned I love anthology and think Anthology 1 is better than any of their early albums (I kinda like it although I, as many of you know, don’t like the early stuff that much). Still I like Anthology 2 and 3 way better. I think really outstanding songs are: The until 1961 stuff, The decca audition songs, you know what to do, that means a lot, norvegian wood (which, espicially the bridge/chorus (whatever) sounds really different), And Your Bird Can Sing , the Strawberry Fields Forever outtakes, you know my name (look up the number) (unedited), I Am The Walrus , Your Mother Should Know , Across The Universe , helter skelter, the kinfauns demos, obladi oblada, good night (in the beginning without strings), While My Guitar Gently Weeps , not guillty, Rocky Raccoon , What’s The New Mary Jane , She Came In Through The Bathroom Window , the rock’n’roll medley, oh darling, george’s 3 birthday demos, Maxwell’s Silver Hammer , Come And Get It , the end.

I find it interesting that you don’t care for Badfinger’s version. Paul gave them that very same demo tape and told them to record it exactly the same. I find the 2 different versions very similar.

Also, the Badfinger singers were nowhere in Paul’s league, though in their own right they’re not bad.
As for putting “Come And Get It ” on McCartney, the problem with that as I see it is that it would have sounded markedly out of place with the style and ambiance of that album, where most of the songs are either folkish or soft rockish, with a rather rough-hewn feel to them, and nothing really “pop” per se is there; whereas “Come And Get It ” has a decidedly pop-rock and chipper 60s flavor — it almost sounds like the Monkees could have done it. To my ear, I also think it wouldn’t have fit Ram , Wings Wild Life , Red Rose Speedway or Band On The Run — not even Venus And Mars — but it more appropriately would have fit Speed of Sound.

Offline I like “One After 909 (False Starts)” on the Anthology better, too bad Paul couldn’t keep the bass up because it was “murder”. Oh Paul.
